In a rebuke of Gov. Bill Lee\u2019s recent signing of a bill that puts restrictions on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/t\/drag\/\">drag<\/a>&nbsp;performances in public, the New Jersey trio\u2019s male members, singer-guitarist Ira Kaplan and bassist James McNew, came out after a short intermission dressed in women\u2019s clothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"title-of-a-story\">&nbsp;RELATED<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/lists\/stars-slam-anti-lgbtq-bills-hayley-williams-lizzo-ariana-grande\/\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/lists\/stars-slam-anti-lgbtq-bills-hayley-williams-lizzo-ariana-grande\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Hayley-Williams-2018-bonnaroo-billboard-1548.jpg?w=237&amp;h=147&amp;crop=1\" alt=\"Hayley Williams of Paramore\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"title-of-a-story\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/lists\/stars-slam-anti-lgbtq-bills-hayley-williams-lizzo-ariana-grande\/\">Musicians Who\u2019ve Spoken Out Against Recent Anti-LGBTQ Bills: Hayley Williams, Lizzo, Ariana Grande\u2026<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/lists\/stars-slam-anti-lgbtq-bills-hayley-williams-lizzo-ariana-grande\/\"><time datetime=\"00:00-YY-DD-MM\">03\/15\/2023<\/time><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the&nbsp;<em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/story\/entertainment\/music\/2023\/03\/14\/yo-la-tengo-wear-drag-in-tennessee-drag-show-law-nashville\/70006643007\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tennessean<\/a><\/em>, Kaplan wore makeup, a red dress and a long black wig, while McNew donned a shawl and a sun hat, and drummer Georgia Hubley kept her same outfit. The paper said the band did not mention Lee or the controversial new law, which prohibits \u201cadult-oriented\u201d entertainment, including \u201cmale and female impersonators\u201d on public property, as well as limiting such entertainment to age-restricted venues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And while they didn\u2019t specifically explain their action, in a statement (via&nbsp;<em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/news\/yo-la-tengo-play-nashville-show-in-drag-to-protest-tennessee-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pitchfork<\/a><\/em>), said, \u201cWhat we did last night couldn\u2019t have been clearer, and requires no further comment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The law, which takes effect on April 1, is among a flurry of new laws being passed by conservative politicians across the country taking aim at the LGBTQ community, including a number that seek to deny gender-affirming health care to transgender children. Lee also signed a total ban on such care the same day as the drag bill. According to the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.org\/press-releases\/human-rights-campaign-slams-governor-lee-for-signing-anti-drag-bill-and-gender-affirming-care-ban-into-law-tn-becomes-first-state-to-criminalize-drag\" target=\"_blank\">Human Rights Campaign<\/a>, Tennessee has passed more anti-LGBTQ laws than any other state in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/cyndi-lauper\/\">Cyndi Lauper<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/the-b-52s-2\/\">The B-52s<\/a>&nbsp;also recently joined the rising chorus of voices speaking out against new laws being passed by Republicans targeting the trans community and seeking to ban drag artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEquality for everybody, or nobody\u2019s really equal,\u201d longtime LGBTQ alley Lauper told ITK, according to&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/in-the-know\/3888213-cyndi-lauper-compares-anti-lgbtq-bills-to-nazi-germany-this-is-how-hitler-started\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Hill<\/a>. \u201cThis is how Hitler started. just weeding everybody out.\u201d Hitler\u2019s Nazi Germany tagged gay people as \u201cenemies of the state\u201d and many were jailed or killed in concentration camps, and Lauper said it\u2019s imperative that we keep \u201cfighting for civil rights.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a sharply worded statement issued on March 8, the B-52s \u2014 also longtime advocates for LBGTQ causes \u2014 wrote, \u201cWe, The B-52s, are deeply concerned about the numerous new bills that promote transphobia and discrimination against transgender individuals and drag artists, which have been introduced in the United States. We strongly denounce these bills and stand in solidarity with out LGBTQ+ community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paramore singer Hayley Williams, a native of Tennessee,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/paramores-hayley-williams-speaks-out-on-new-tennessee-drag-ban-and-trans-healthcare-bill-3405138\" target=\"_blank\">criticized<\/a>&nbsp;her state\u2019s governor in an Instagram story, writing, \u201cOnce again our state has passed two regressive and unfathomably harmful bills. We stand in solidarity with our LGBTQIA+ family and local LGBTQIA+ orgs in this fight, not only for inclusion for our friends and family in the queer community, but for radical acceptance and empowerment for each of them. Drag is not a crime.
