They&#8217;re being a hack, and they shouldn&#8217;t be considered serious sources,&#8221; Max Moran, the personnel team director at Revolving Door Project (RDP), said in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/newswire\/ethics-watchdog-launches-hack-watch-website-tracking-media-analysts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement<\/a>&nbsp;introducing the new site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Economists like to sound certain, and they like to ridicule anyone who disagrees with them.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A follow-up to RDP&#8217;s wildly successful&nbsp;<em>Hack Watch<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/therevolvingdoorproject.org\/search?type=newsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">newsletter<\/a>\u2014which began by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/therevolvingdoorproject.org\/larry-summers-advised-a-possible-crypto-fraudster-is-anyone-going-to-ask-him-about-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">scrutinizing<\/a>&nbsp;former U.S. Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, often called &#8220;Wall Street&#8217;s favorite economist,&#8221; and his cryptocurrency partnerships\u2014the website features an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/therevolvingdoorproject.org\/debt-faq\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FAQ<\/a>&nbsp;section on the federal debt as well as a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/hackwatch.us\/trope-tracker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;Trope Tracker&#8221;<\/a>&nbsp;meant to dispel &#8220;common fallacies, falsehoods, and framing mistakes in economics coverage.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Economists like to sound certain, and they like to ridicule anyone who disagrees with them,&#8221; said Moran. &#8220;This can incline reporters, especially reporters who worry that they don&#8217;t understand economics very well, to defer to economists unquestioningly.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/revolvingdoorDC\/status\/1638530054253694976?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1638530054253694976%7Ctwgr%5E5a458e7cc3b10e6f1890d686ddf51030f26d5916%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2Frevolving-door-project-hack-watch<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moran continued:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>In the neoliberal age, economic analysis (from&nbsp;<em>the right kind<\/em>&nbsp;of neoclassical economists) was considered scientific truth. This is nonsense. Economics isn&#8217;t a hard science, it&#8217;s a method of analysis\u2014a set of tools that help us to understand a few particular ways of how the economy works. Deciding what&#8217;s actually&nbsp;<em>right<\/em>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<em>wrong<\/em>&nbsp;for the economy is always, ultimately, a matter of values and philosophy, which we express through politics.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Top hacks&#8221; who already have bios on the new site include&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/hackwatch.us\/who-were-watching\/larry-summers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Summers<\/a>, 2009 auto industry bailout architect&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/hackwatch.us\/who-were-watching\/steven-rattner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Steven Rattner<\/a>, Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget president&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/hackwatch.us\/who-were-watching\/maya-macguineas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maya McGuineas,<\/a>&nbsp;and senior vice president&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/hackwatch.us\/who-were-watching\/marc-goldwein\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marc Goldwein<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Economics isn&#8217;t a hard science, it&#8217;s a method of analysis\u2014a set of tools that help us to understand a few particular ways of how the economy works.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;When these hacks receive air time, they often present the existing socio-economic order as a natural phenomenon, softly echoing Margaret Thatcher&#8217;s famous &#8216;no alternative&#8217; declaration,&#8221; said&nbsp;<strong><\/strong>Dylan Gyauch-Lewis,<strong><\/strong>who co-leads the Hack Watch project, in a reference to the former right-wing British prime minister&#8217;s infamous neoliberal slogan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In a time of crisis after crisis, we cannot afford to restrict the public&#8217;s imagination to the world as it was in 1992,&#8221; Gyauch-Lewis asserted. &#8220;The staid old guard not only restricts the public conception of what economic policy can be, it misleads about what that view already is.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;To allow the same few Clintonian New-Democrats to monopolize discourse does viewers, policymakers, and the world a great disservice,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
