The top military contractor\u2014Lockheed Martin\u2014received $106 from the average taxpayer, while just $6 went to funding renewable energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/media-library\/image.png?id=33480906&amp;width=680&amp;quality=80\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the analysis, the average 2022 U.S. taxpayer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Paid $74 for nuclear weapons, and just $43 for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spent $70 on deportations and border control, versus just $19 for refugee assistance;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contributed $20 for federal prisons, and just $11 for anti-homelessness programs; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gave $298 to the top five military contractors, and just $19 for mental health and substance abuse.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The main message? Our government is continuing to invest too much in the military, and in militarized law enforcement, and not nearly enough on prevention, people, and our communities,&#8221; NPP said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The annual analysis shows how individual income taxes\u2014the portion withheld from workers&#8217; paychecks\u2014were spent in 2022. It does not include corporate or individual payroll taxes that fund Social Security and Medicare. To determine what constitutes the average tax bill, NPP divided the total amount of federal income tax collected by the number of applicable returns filed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NPP&#8217;s analysis comes just over a month after the White House released President Joe Biden&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/budget_fy2024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$1.6 trillion budget request<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/budget_fy2024.pdf\"><\/a>for fiscal year 2024. More than half of that amount\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/biden-record-military-budget\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$886 billion<\/a>\u2014would go to the military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">At a starting proposal of $886 billion, our <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/natpriorities?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@natpriorities<\/a> team calculated that the military budget in FY 2024 is shaping up to be one of the highest in history: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/4iuoib8JAH\">pic.twitter.com\/4iuoib8JAH<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Institute for Policy Studies (@IPS_DC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IPS_DC\/status\/1636379092865138689?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 16, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Responding to the $886 billion request, NPP program director Lindsay Koshgarian&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ips-dc.org\/release-a-quarter-of-bidens-budget-will-go-to-pentagon-contractors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;last month that &#8220;this military budget represents a shameful status quo that the country can no longer afford.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Families are struggling to afford basics like housing, food, and medicine, and our last pandemic-era protections are ending, all while Pentagon contractors pay their CEOs millions straight from the public treasury,&#8221; Koshgarian noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;A responsible budget would restore the Pentagon&#8217;s spending to previous reduced levels from just a few short years ago, and reinvest that additional money at home where we need it the most,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
