As it was, the Court&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/us-supreme-court-mifepristone-abortion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">decided<\/a>&nbsp;by a 7-2 margin to maintain availability of the widely-used medication, a relief\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/us-supreme-court-mifepristone-abortion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">even if temporary<\/a>\u2014for reproductive rights defenders nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After one legal expert called the portion of Alito&#8217;s dissent challenging the hypothetical actions of Biden &#8220;unwarranted and completely unbefitting a Supreme Court Justice,&#8221; Ocasio-Cortez chimed in to say that the administration, had it been necessary, would have been right to have the FDA ignore a Court ruling that barred access to a legitimately approved drug used safely by millions each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The court,&#8221; said Ocasio-Cortez, &#8220;has devolved into a highly politicized entity that is rapidly delegitimizing. Open discussion of checking the court&#8217;s abuse of power and defying Kacsmaryk possibly contributed to pause\/consideration.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Another perspective: despite Alito\u2019s tantrum, this is a good thing.<br><br>The court has devolved into a highly politicized entity that is rapidly delegitimizing. Open discussion of checking the court\u2019s abuse of power &amp; defying Kacsmaryk possibly contributed to pause\/consideration <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/T9I29rll5k\">https:\/\/t.co\/T9I29rll5k<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AOC\/status\/1649568905285758976?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 22, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ahead of the high court&#8217;s ruling on Friday,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beckershospitalreview.com\/legal-regulatory-issues\/lawmakers-call-for-fda-to-ignore-texas-abortion-pill-ruling.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">many advocates<\/a>&nbsp;and lawmakers\u2014including the New York Democrat\u2014had called on Biden and the FDA to ignore the lower-court ruling of U.S. District Court Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk, a far-right ideologue in Texas and Trump appointee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The court is a political entity currently engaged in overreach and abuse of power,&#8221; the congresswoman&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AOC\/status\/1649569874677473281\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;in her Friday night rebuke. &#8220;In our system of checks and balances, SCOTUS\u2019s reckless behavior warrants a check from the leg + executive branches. This is not unprecedented, it\u2019s how our system is designed to avert tyranny.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dante Atkins, a progressive political strategist and former congressional staffer, said Ocasio-Cortez&#8217;s assessment was correct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The only people still pretending that the court is legitimate are a handful of Boomer Dems,&#8221; Atkins&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DanteAtkins\/status\/1649577287975665664\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tweeted<\/a>. &#8220;Both MAGA and most younger Dems recognize what it is: an unelected partisan super-legislature.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
