Greg Gianforte&#8217;s son called on him to veto a bill to ban gender-affirming healthcare for minors, the governor signed the legislation into law Friday, making Montana&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/04\/15\/upshot\/bans-transgender-teenagers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the 11th<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/04\/15\/upshot\/bans-transgender-teenagers.html\">&nbsp;state<\/a>&nbsp;in the past three months to enact full or partial bans on transition surgery, hormonal treatment, and puberty blockers for youths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gianforte&#8217;s son, David, is nonbinary and uses he and they pronouns. He&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/montanafreepress.org\/2023\/04\/26\/montana-governor-gianforte-lobbied-by-son-to-veto-trans-bills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">appealed to his father&nbsp;<\/a>in a meeting in March as the bill was moving through the Republican-controlled legislature, telling him the ban &#8220;would significantly directly affect a number of my friends.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I would like to make the argument that these bills are immoral, unjust, and frankly a violation of human rights,&#8221; David said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the meeting, the governor<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/04\/28\/us\/montana-trans-gianforte.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;signed<\/a>&nbsp;Senate Bill 99 into law on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>David told&nbsp;<em>The Montana Free Press<\/em>&nbsp;on Wednesday that his father is &#8220;concerned about his career&#8221; and is &#8220;aware that being able to stay in the position of governor is dependent on him staying in favor of the Republican Party.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The law has been at the center of state House Republicans&#8217; silencing of Rep. Zooey Zephyr (D-100) in recent days. Speaker Matt Regier (R-4)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/montana-transgender-lawmaker-silenced\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">refused to recognize her<\/a>&nbsp;on the House floor after Zephyr, the state&#8217;s first transgender lawmaker, told Republicans they would have &#8220;blood on their hands&#8221; if they backed S.B. 99. Earlier this week, the GOP majority<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/montana-transgender-lawmaker-barred\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;voted to bar<\/a>&nbsp;Zephyr from the House floor until the end of the legislative session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zephyr was greeted with cheers from her constituents and supporters in Missoula on Friday evening as transgender and nonbinary Montanans and their allies rallied against the gender-affirming care ban and other anti-LGBTQ+ legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">yeah you could say missoula is pretty amped to have our representative, THE zooey zephyr, back home. silenced no more\u2014shrouded in love from her hometown and her district <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/DPbXmyfeh2\">pic.twitter.com\/DPbXmyfeh2<\/a><\/p>&mdash; paul kim \uae40\uc11d\uc778 (@paulsgkim) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/paulsgkim\/status\/1652132348652318721?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 29, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s clear that anti-trans policies do not align with Montana&#8217;s values,&#8221; Zephyr told&nbsp;<em>The New York Times<\/em>&nbsp;Friday. &#8220;We are a state that cares for its community. There are trans people through every community in this state.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ACLU of Montana&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ACLU\/status\/1651251041503961088\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has said<\/a>&nbsp;it will file a legal challenge against the gender-affirming healthcare ban.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Access to transition care has been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hcplive.com\/view\/suicide-risk-reduces-73-transgender-nonbinary-youths-gender-affirming-care\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">linked<\/a>&nbsp;to a sharp decrease in the rate of suicidal ideation and depression among transgender youths, and is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/transhealthproject.org\/resources\/medical-organization-statements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">strongly supported<\/a>&nbsp;by the American Academy of Pediatrics as well as other health associations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gianforte also signed a bill this week that will make it harder for public school students to be disciplined for misgendering nonbinary or transgender classmates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
