The drop comes as a win for President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who has promised to curb forest less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In April alone, deforestation was down 68 percent from last year. The region saw 127 square miles (329 square kilometers) of forest destroyed, running below the historical April average of 176 square miles (456 square kilometers),&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/deforestation-brazils-amazon-falls-68-april-first-major-drop-under-lula-2023-05-12\/\">Reuters reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is unclear, however, if the downward trend will continue into late summer, when forest loss typically peaks. \u201cThe numbers are at a very high level, and the dry season, which is favorable to deforestation, has not yet started,\u201d Mariana Napolitano of WWF-Brazil, said in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwf.org.br\/nossosconteudos\/notas_e_releases\/english\/?85601\/Even-with-signs-of-a-drop-in-2023-deforestation-remains-high-in-the-Amazon-situation-is-critical-in-the-Cerrado\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Brazil\u2019s dry Cerrado region, land clearing is trending up. Officials have recorded a spike in deforestation in the Brazilian savanna this year.
