Dean Preston said at the rally. \u201cAnd truth is in short supply in the killing of Banko Brown.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/occupysf.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/image-41.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26596\" srcset=\"https:\/\/occupysf.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/image-41.png 768w, https:\/\/occupysf.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/image-41-225x300.png 225w, https:\/\/occupysf.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/image-41-113x150.png 113w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u2018I am sick of the lies.\u2019 Photos by Michael Redmond; featured photo by Steve Rhodes<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Preston noted that DA Brooke Jenkins first said that this was a clear-cut case of self-defense. \u201cThat was a bald-faced lie.\u201d Then she sent a condescending letter to Sup. Shamann Walton saying that she could not legally release the video. \u201cThat was a lie. We discovered it was a lie because she released the video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am sick of the lies in this case.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rev. Amos Brown, the pastor of Third Baptist Church who has in the past&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/politics\/article\/Opposing-SF-Mayor-London-Breed-That-s-14521748.php\">been an ally and supporter of the mayor<\/a>, said that \u201ca human being has been murdered.\u201d He addressed the allegations that Banko Brown had stolen some candy, saying that \u201cour ancestors were stolen from mother Africa \u2026 this city is guilty of a crime.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Honey Mahogany, the chair of the Democratic Party, said that \u201cthese have been very tough years for the trans community.\u201d Mahogany said that the city has been telling trans people that this is a safe place, that they can come here from states that are attacking their existence. \u201cBut why are we calling them here if it\u2019s not safe for them?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kevin Ortiz, co-president of the Latino Democratic Club, said that the city leadership has created the economic conditions that led to this killing. \u201cThis is on London Breed, the governor, the ruling class,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the press conference was going on, I was able to speak to Kevin Epps,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/48hills.org\/2022\/06\/were-still-here-kevin-epps-straight-outta-hunters-point-celebrates-20-years\/\">the legendary filmmaker of<\/a>&nbsp;<em>Straight Outta Hunters Point.<\/em>\u201d Epps told me he grew up with Banko Brown\u2019s father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is a tragedy beyond epic proportions,\u201d he told me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A security person who probably worked for the DA\u2019s Office was watching the protest, with cuffs and what looked like a concealed gun, even though Jenkins and her staff work behind a locked iron gate and everyone at the rally was entirely peaceful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pressure on Breed and Jenkins continues to build: At tonight\u2019s Police Commission meeting, Max Carter-Oberstone, the commission vice-president (and an appointee of Breed) said that he was \u201calarmed\u201d at the way Jenkins handled the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe expressed a decision before our own Police Department had finished its investigation,\u201d her said. \u201cThe fact that the suspect made of claim of self defense that is not corroborated by the video or witnesses is extraordinary.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said that the responsibility of a prosecutor \u201cwas not done in this case.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Police Chief Bill Scott carefully avoided saying much about the decision, but he did say that his department, after reviewing the available evidence, booked the guard on charges of murder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Representatives of a broad range of San Francisco organizations and activists were at the event today. Every supervisor, including Breed\u2019s allies, expressed concern at Jenkins\u2019 actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I suspect the mayor and the DA are hoping that all of this community anger and organizing dissipates before the 2024 elections.
