At this critical Joint Hearing of the San Francisco Planning Commission and the Historic Preservation Commission, the final decision on the fate of the Castro Theatre will be made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yielding to a high-powered PR and lobbying effort from Another Planet Entertainment (APE), SF Supervisor Rafael Mandelman and Mayor London Breed pressured Planning Department staff to recommend that APE be allowed to remodel the interior of the Castro Theatre, SF’s last movie palace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If Mandelman and APE get their way at this hearing, the fixed movie palace seating and sloped floor will be permanently removed. Several full bars will be installed inside the auditorium and in the lobby and mezzanine. A metal scissor gate will be installed across the front of the theater. The theater will be converted to a nightclub and corporate-driven concert venue, open less than half the year and almost exclusively at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Contrary to the intention of landmarking laws, the Castro Theatre’s conversion to APE’s business model will displace LGBTQ and film culture, and it will never return. APE’s plan will take the heart out of the LGBTQ Castro neighborhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Show up on June 8 at 10am at City Hall, room 400. Your physical presence could make the difference. Bring friends, come early for a seat, and wear red!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Public testimony will be allowed at this hearing of only one or two minutes maximum. (We will post information here about how to testify remotely if you are not able to attend in person.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
