Perlstein&#8217;s book,&nbsp;<em>Before the Storm: Barry Goldwater and the Unmaking of the American Consensus<\/em>, was released in 2001 to widespread acclaim, including a laudatory&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_Times\">New York Times<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;review by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Kristol\">William Kristol<\/a>, editor of the conservative&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Weekly_Standard\">Weekly Standard<\/a><\/em>. Kristol wrote of&nbsp;<em>Before the Storm<\/em>, &#8220;It&#8217;s an amazing story, and Perlstein, a man of the left, does it justice.&#8221;<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rick_Perlstein#cite_note-17\">[17]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Perlstein won the 2001&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Los_Angeles_Times\">Los Angeles Times<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;Book Prize in History.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rick_Perlstein#cite_note-18\">[18]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Soon after, Perlstein moved from New York to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chicago\">Chicago<\/a>. From 2003 to 2005, Perlstein was the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Village_Voice\">Village Voice<\/a>&#8216;s national political correspondent, and contributed articles to publications that included the&nbsp;<em>New York Times<\/em>,&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_New_Republic\">The New Republic<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_American_Prospect\">The American Prospect<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beginning in spring 2007 through 2009 Perlstein was a Senior Fellow at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Campaign_for_America%27s_Future\">Campaign for America&#8217;s Future<\/a>&nbsp;where he wrote for its blog&nbsp;<em>The Big Con<\/em>&nbsp;about the failures of conservative governance. A co-director at the Campaign for America&#8217;s Future once noted, &#8220;Rick was unique. \u2026 I don&#8217;t know when he sleeps.&#8221;<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rick_Perlstein#cite_note-huffington-19\">[19]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rick_Perlstein#cite_note-20\">[20]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rick_Perlstein#cite_note-21\">[21]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Nixonland<\/em>&nbsp;(2008)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Main article:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nixonland\">Nixonland<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In May 2008, Perlstein&#8217;s&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nixonland:_The_Rise_of_a_President_and_the_Fracturing_of_America\">Nixonland: The Rise of a President and the Fracturing of America<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;was published to rave reviews.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rick_Perlstein#cite_note-22\">[22]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rick_Perlstein#cite_note-23\">[23]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rick_Perlstein#cite_note-24\">[24]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rick_Perlstein#cite_note-25\">[25]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rick_Perlstein#cite_note-26\">[26]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rick_Perlstein#cite_note-27\">[27]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;In his review, the conservative columnist&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Will\">George Will<\/a>&nbsp;credited Perlstein having &#8220;a novelist&#8217;s, or perhaps an anthropologist&#8217;s, eye for illuminating details&#8221; and called&nbsp;<em>Nixonland<\/em>&nbsp;&#8220;compulsively readable.&#8221;<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rick_Perlstein#cite_note-28\">[28]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;At the end of 2008,&nbsp;<em>The New York Times<\/em>&nbsp;included&nbsp;<em>Nixonland<\/em>&nbsp;among its notable books.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rick_Perlstein#cite_note-29\">[29]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;In 2009,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_A.V._Club\">The A.V. Club<\/a>&nbsp;included it among the best books of the decade.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rick_Perlstein#cite_note-30\">[30]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>The Invisible Bridge<\/em>&nbsp;(2014)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In August 2014,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Simon_%26_Schuster\">Simon &amp; Schuster<\/a>&nbsp;published&nbsp;<em>The Invisible Bridge: the Fall of Nixon and the Rise of Reagan.<\/em>&nbsp;In his&nbsp;<em>New York Times<\/em>&nbsp;review,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Frank_Rich\">Frank Rich<\/a>&nbsp;wrote that the tome was &#8220;a Rosetta stone for reading America and its politics today.&#8221;<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rick_Perlstein#cite_note-31\">[31]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;<em>The Invisible Bridge<\/em>&nbsp;received favorable reviews from&nbsp;<em>The New Yorker<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>Slate<\/em>, and&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Washington_Post\">The Washington Post<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Reaganland<\/em>&nbsp;(2020)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In August 2020, Perlstein published a fourth work detailing the events of the years before&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ronald_Reagan\">Ronald Reagan<\/a>&#8216;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/President_of_the_United_States\">presidency<\/a>&nbsp;and his presidential race against&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jimmy_Carter\">Jimmy Carter<\/a>&nbsp;from 1976 to 1980.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rick_Perlstein#cite_note-32\">[32]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;<em>Reaganland<\/em>&nbsp;is Perlstein&#8217;s longest publication at almost 1,200 pages long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Reaganland<\/em>&nbsp;received favorable reviews from&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Guardian\">The Guardian<\/a><\/em>,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rick_Perlstein#cite_note-33\">[33]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;the&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Los_Angeles_Times\">Los Angeles Times<\/a><\/em>,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rick_Perlstein#cite_note-34\">[34]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_New_Republic\">The New Republic<\/a><\/em>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rick_Perlstein#cite_note-35\">[35]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;<em>Reaganland<\/em>&nbsp;was one of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_Times\">New York Times<\/a>&nbsp;100 Notables Books of 2020.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rick_Perlstein#cite_note-36\">[36]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;It was also subject to a scathing critique in&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Commentary_(magazine)\">Commentary<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Steven_F._Hayward\">Steven F.
