Ron Johnson came under fire Wednesday after the multimillionaire Wisconsin Republican asserted during a Senate hearing that Social Security\u2014an economic lifeline for tens of millions of Americans who paid into the system throughout their working lives\u2014unfairly takes from wealthier people to support lower-income retirees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking during the Senate Budget Committee hearing\u2014entitled&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.budget.senate.gov\/hearings\/protecting-social-security-for-all-making-the-wealthy-pay-their-fair-share\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.budget.senate.gov\/hearings\/protecting-social-security-for-all-making-the-wealthy-pay-their-fair-share\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Protecting Social Security for All: Making the Wealthy Pay Their Fair Share<\/a><em>\u2014<\/em>Johnson said that his Wisconsin constituents &#8220;have a basic misconception about Social Security.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Johnson\u2014one of the wealthiest U.S. senators,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/personal-finances\/ron-johnson\/net-worth?cid=N00032546&amp;year=2018\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to<\/a>&nbsp;the watchdog OpenSecrets\u2014derided Social Security, a key New Deal program, as a &#8220;nanny state&#8221; scheme enacted because the government doesn&#8217;t trust Americans to save for retirement on their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Most people think, &#8216;Well, that&#8217;s my money,&#8217; and, in fact, part of it is,&#8221; the senator continued. &#8220;If you&#8217;re in a low-income group, you&#8217;re getting a lot more in return than you invested in&#8230; If you&#8217;re in the high-income, you&#8217;re not getting what you paid in.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">GOP wants to \u201csave\u201d Social Security by raising age to 69 &amp; cutting benefits.<br><br>Dems have a better plan: Social Security Expansion Act!<br><br>Expands Social Security benefits by $2,400\/year and fully funds for 75 years by applying payroll tax to incomes over $250,000. <br><br>Best solution!<\/p>&mdash; Lisa S. Ron Johnson is a LIAR and it was clear from today&#8217;s hearing that he is a defender of the rich and not for the people!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Johnson previously&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpr.org\/us-sen-ron-johnson-stands-medicare-social-security-remarks-after-being-called-out-president-joe\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">called<\/a>&nbsp;Social Security a &#8220;Ponzi scheme&#8221; in one of many&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/08\/03\/mandela-barnes-slams-self-serving-multimillionaire-ron-johnson-attack-social\">attacks<\/a>&nbsp;on the program upon which around 66 million Americans rely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further arguing during Wednesday&#8217;s hearing that Social Security was not meant to be a &#8220;general welfare system,&#8221; Johnson turned to Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP) executive director Amy Hanauer\u2014who&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/itep.org\/testimony-tax-policy-to-strengthen-social-security\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">testified<\/a>&nbsp;that &#8220;our tax system raises far too little from those with the most&#8221;\u2014to ask what he called &#8220;a very simple question.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Out of every $1 of income that any American makes,&#8221; he queried, &#8220;how much should be the maximum amount the government takes out in total?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I think we should think about the kind of country we want to have,&#8221; Hanauer began to reply before Johnson interrupted her to demand an answer as &#8220;a percent.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You know, we had 400 billionaires who paid less than an 8% tax rate, so more than that,&#8221; she asserted. &#8220;It strikes me that in a society where the wealthiest are getting more and more of our income, they can afford to chip in more to maintain the systems that enabled them to build that wealth in the first place.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">As <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/amyhanauer?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@amyhanauer<\/a> notes in this morning&#39;s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenateBudget?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@SenateBudget<\/a> hearing, the poorest 20% of Americans paid 8.4% of their income toward taxes for Social Security and Medicare combined in 2022, while the richest 1% paid just 2.3 percent of their income. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/h3XsiewMiv\">pic.twitter.com\/h3XsiewMiv<\/a><\/p>&mdash; ITEP (@iteptweets) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/iteptweets\/status\/1679139926871351296?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 12, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senate Budget Committee Chair Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) followed Hanauer&#8217;s response by opining that &#8220;it would make a very big difference to me in how much should be taxed on a dollar of income whether it was the first dollar of income of an individual or their billionth dollar of income.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Tuesday, the Social Security Administration&#8217;s Office of the Chief Actuary&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/social-security\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">published an analysis<\/a>&nbsp;showing how Democrats&#8217;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/senate-bill\/1174\/text?s=1&amp;r=14\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Medicare and Social Security Fair Share Act<\/a>&nbsp;could extend the social programs&#8217; solvency for generations by increasing taxes on incomes over $400,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another bill&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/sanders-warren-expand-social-security\">introduced<\/a>&nbsp;earlier this year by Sens.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/bernie-sanders\">Bernie Sanders<\/a>&nbsp;(I-Vt.) and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/Elizabeth-Warren\">Elizabeth Warren<\/a>&nbsp;(D-Mass.) and Reps. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) and Val Hoyle (D-Ore.) would boost monthly Social Security benefits by at least $200, prolonging the program&#8217;s solvency for decades by lifting the cap on the maximum income subject to Social Security payroll tax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/mccarthy-social-security-medicare\">announced<\/a>&nbsp;the creation of a fiscal commission tasked with finding ways to reduce the national debt,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/kevin-mccarthy-social-security\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">warning<\/a>&nbsp;last month that he was &#8220;going to make some people uncomfortable&#8221; by looking at cuts to Social Security and Medicare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
