Henry Cuellar in his reelection bid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (N.Y.), Democratic Caucus Chairman Rep. Pete Aguilar (Calif.), Minority Whip Rep. Katherine Clark (Mass.), and Assistant Democratic Leader Rep. James Clyburn (S.C.) all&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2023\/08\/03\/henry-cuellar-endorsements-house-democrats\/#TX28\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced&nbsp;<\/a>their endorsements of the right-wing Democrat, who has represented Texas&#8217; 28th district since 2005.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) and former House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (Md.) also voiced their support for Cuellar, who in addition to being the only anti-abortion rights Democrat in the House, has an &#8220;A&#8221; rating from the National Rifle Association indicating his anti-gun control views.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wondering why the influential top Democrats are focusing on Cuellar&#8217;s district at this point, advocate and political strategist Jen Bluestein called the leaders&#8217; move &#8220;galling&#8221; considering the ongoing Republican attacks on abortion rights&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/abortion-bans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">across the country<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheRealJenBlue\/status\/1687144085507776531?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1687144085507776531%7Ctwgr%5E3db33dbc81aeed8bcfb8c6cbedf9de6c94ca72bf%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2Fdemocratic-leaders-back-cuellar<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;If Cuellar&#8217;s seen the light on women&#8217;s freedom, he should say so,&#8221; said Bluestein. &#8220;Loud enough for Texas women to hear.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Texas Tribune<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2023\/08\/03\/henry-cuellar-endorsements-house-democrats\/#TX28\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noted&nbsp;<\/a>that Jessica Cisneros, a staunchly pro-choice progressive who came within 300 votes of Cuellar in the 2022 House primary and also challenged him in 2020, has not ruled out another primary run next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year&#8217;s primary runoff between the two candidates came shortly after a draft opinion was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/05\/02\/leaked-draft-opinion-shows-supreme-court-set-strike-down-roe-v-wade\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">leaked<\/a>&nbsp;from the U.S. Supreme Court, indicating that the right-wing majority would soon overturn&nbsp;<em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>, as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/06\/24\/dark-day-our-nation-right-wing-supreme-court-ends-constitutional-right-abortion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">it did<\/a>&nbsp;in June 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clyburn&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2022\/05\/04\/jim-clyburn-henry-cuellar-democrats-abortion-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">angered<\/a>&nbsp;abortion rights advocates by stumping for Cuellar two days after the leak, telling reporters that as a &#8220;big-tent party,&#8221; Democrats should welcome the congressman despite his views running counter to the party&#8217;s agenda.
