{"id":27830,"date":"2023-08-09T12:14:06","date_gmt":"2023-08-09T19:14:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/occupysf.net\/?p=27830"},"modified":"2023-08-09T12:14:09","modified_gmt":"2023-08-09T19:14:09","slug":"heres-when-san-franciscos-first-ikea-will-open-its-doors-august-23","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/occupysf.net\/index.php\/2023\/08\/09\/heres-when-san-franciscos-first-ikea-will-open-its-doors-august-23\/","title":{"rendered":"Here&#8217;s when San Francisco&#8217;s first Ikea will open its doors:  August 23!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfexaminer.com\/users\/profile\/Greg%20Wong\">By Greg Wong | Examiner staff writer<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aug 8, 2023\u00a0Updated\u00a021 hrs ago  (SFExaminer.com)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bloximages.chicago2.vip.townnews.com\/sfexaminer.com\/content\/tncms\/assets\/v3\/editorial\/8\/12\/81299f12-362d-11ee-bf4d-2fd41d0a52e7\/64d2aba6041b1.image.jpg?resize=400%2C267\" alt=\"san francisco ikea rendering\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A rendering of Ikea&#8217;s new San Francisco store, which opens on Aug. 23.Ikea<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ikea, a store that city officials are banking on being a key catalyst for The City\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfexaminer.com\/forum\/downtown-sf-can-recover-with-a-little-dose-of-game-theory\/article_e7f5ba80-0961-11ee-9c2a-8b47caa30924.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">downtown recovery<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ikea.com\/us\/en\/newsroom\/corporate-news\/ikea-san-francisco-will-open-aug-23rd-pub4465f1f0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">finally has an opening date<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After multiple delays, the Swedish furniture giant will open its first San Francisco warehouse on Aug. 23, Ikea announced on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But this shop, located at 945 Market St., will be different from Ikea\u2019s usual spacious depots, like its other Bay Area locations in Emeryville and East Palo Alto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, the 52,000 square-foot space will sell products uniquely tailored to fit the needs of San Francisco urbanites, with a focus on \u201caffordability,\u201d \u201csmall-space living\u201d and \u201ccity living,\u201d officials said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The three-level store will feature delis, selling Ikea\u2019s famed Swedish meatballs along with Swedish fish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The San Francisco store will also have a program to buy and resell previously used Ikea products, and a home delivery service for larger items like couches and bookshelves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are so excited to open the doors of our new IKEA store to our neighbors in the San Francisco area,\u201d Arda Akalin, Ikea San Francisco Market Manager, said in a statement. \u201cWe appreciate the excitement and support from the community and can\u2019t wait for our customers to experience the new store full of affordable home furnishings and solutions that reflect who San Franciscans are and how they live.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The store will be the first business to open inside a multi-story building that Ingka Centres, Ikea\u2019s holding company, purchased two years ago. The mall, which Ikea is branding as a \u201cmeeting place,\u201d will also be home to a food court, retail shops, and a top-floor co-working office space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 250,000 square-foot complex is nestled in the heart of The City\u2019s mid-Market region, which has been at the center of discourse about San Francisco\u2019s post-pandemic recovery and the site of multiple high-profile organized retail thefts the last few years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, multiple prominent retailers have either left or announced plans to leave the area, including the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfexaminer.com\/news\/business\/sf-westfield-mall-parent-company-pulls-out-blaming-downtown\/article_1f944b86-0977-11ee-be54-0b5a059ff0bb.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Westfield Mall<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfexaminer.com\/news\/business\/coco-republic-union-square-closing-as-ikea-sf-opening-looms\/article_78695f46-f02a-11ed-bfca-a3b4504f2c09.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Coco Republic<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 an Australian competitor to Ikea \u2014 and a Whole Foods just two blocks away from where the new Ikea will be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>City officials, some of whom will take part in a ribbon cutting ceremony on opening day, hope Ikea\u2019s launch will boost ongoing efforts to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfexaminer.com\/news\/breed-promotes-public-safety-downtown-recovery-in-2023\/article_ee76730c-a752-11ed-b474-b755dc5046a2.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">revitalize the downtown corridor<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe arrival of @IKEA is great news for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LondonBreed\/status\/1688963645148188672\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The City&#8217;s economic recovery<\/a>&nbsp;that will bring local jobs and excitement to the Union Square area,\u201d San Francisco Mayor London Breed tweeted. \u201cWe are thrilled to welcome IKEA to be part of San Francisco&#8217;s future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The store had originally planned to open in fall of 2021, but underwent a series of delays due to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2023\/08\/08\/heres-when-downtown-san-franciscos-new-ikea-will-open\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">permit and supply-chain issues<\/a>&nbsp;and concerns about security, according to the San Francisco Standard.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ikea, a store that city officials are banking on being a key catalyst for The City\u2019s&nbsp;downtown recovery,&nbsp;finally has an opening date.
