{"id":28103,"date":"2023-08-23T13:22:03","date_gmt":"2023-08-23T20:22:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/occupysf.net\/?p=28103"},"modified":"2023-08-23T13:22:04","modified_gmt":"2023-08-23T20:22:04","slug":"what-geary-boulevard-residents-and-businesses-can-learn-from-van-ness-brt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/occupysf.net\/index.php\/2023\/08\/23\/what-geary-boulevard-residents-and-businesses-can-learn-from-van-ness-brt\/","title":{"rendered":"WHAT GEARY BOULEVARD RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES CAN LEARN FROM VAN NESS BRT"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/author\/sebastion\/\">Sebastian<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0August 21, 2023 (BeyondChron.org)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"393\" src=\"https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/you-are-invited.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The invitation to the opening of the Van Ness Avenue BRT project.&nbsp;March 12, 2022<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was not an April Fool\u2019s joke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was a miracle when Van Ness Avenue residents and businesses received the invitation to the opening of the long waited Van Ness Bus Rapid Transit project from the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency on March 14, 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/you-are-invited.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"393\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-49378\">The invitation to the opening of the Van Ness Avenue BRT project.&nbsp;March 12, 2022<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After receiving the invitation, I walked along Van Ness Avenue from Market Street to Lombard Street to talk to residents and businesses about how the Van Ness BRT project had affected their lives and businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I took notes and photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of my walk, I stood at the intersection of Van Ness Avenue and Lombard Street looking down at Van Ness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Green Day\u2019s song, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=51XzW98wEDg\">Boulevard Of Broken Dreams<\/a>\u201d just popped up into my head: Van Ness Avenue is the \u201cBoulevard of Broken Dreams.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, it was a beautiful April Fool\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After putting up with noises, dust, water shutdowns, traffic, and parking nightmares for 6 years, I was eager to attend&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2022\/04\/01\/no-joke-after-years-of-delay-van-ness-brt-opens-to-fanfare\/\">the opening of the Van Ness Bus Rapid Transit project<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/pic1-572x258.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"572\" height=\"258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/pic1-572x258.png 572w, https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/pic1-960x432.png 960w, https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/pic1-768x346.png 768w, https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/pic1.png 1366w\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-49380\">The first Van Ness Ave BRT bus. April 1, 2022<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first person I talked to when I arrived at the War Memorial Veterans building was Jeffrey Tumlin, the Director of the SFMTA, who was well aware of my dissatisfactions with \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2022\/04\/01\/van-ness-brt-bus-rapid-transit-history-timeline\/\">the Van Mess project.<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He sincerely apologized for all the delays and the problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said, \u201cWe didn\u2019t know what was underground until we dug up. April 1, 2022<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joe Betz, the owner of House of Prime Rib was invited to speak \u201con behalf\u201d of Van Ness Avenue businesses and share his personal experiences about the project as a restauranteur on Van Ness Avenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/pic4-191x425.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"191\" height=\"425\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/pic4-191x425.png 191w, https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/pic4.png 300w\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-49383\">Joe Betz, the owner of House of Prime Ribs. April 1, 2022<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Betz said that of course there were a few problems here and there during the construction on Van Ness Avenue but the city was very good at updating him on the progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project didn\u2019t affect him and his business too much he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He left out&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2022\/03\/31\/for-struggling-businesses-van-ness-is-a-boulevard-of-broken-promises\/\">struggling and shuttered businesses<\/a>, including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/restaurants\/article\/Ruths-Chris-San-Francisco-steakhouse-closes-16211123.php\">Ruth\u2019s Chris Steakhouse on Van Ness<\/a>&nbsp;because of the construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John Maloney, the Regional Vice President of Ruth\u2019s Chris Steak wrote this email to me after they closed their restaurant permanently on Van Ness:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sebastian,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thank you for your email regarding Ruth\u2019s Chris in SF.&nbsp; Our decision to close in San Francisco was not an easy one, but due to the business climate in the city, we could no longer afford to keep the restaurant running while making a profit.&nbsp; If we ever decide to re-open in SF I will personally let you know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thank you,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John<br>John Maloney<br>Regional Vice President<br>Ruth\u2019s Chris Steak House<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, It was time for the ribbon-cutting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before cutting the ribbon, Mayor London Breed said, \u201cWe have waited a long time for this moment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/pic5-572x258.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"572\" height=\"258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/pic5-572x258.png 572w, https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/pic5-960x432.png 960w, https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/pic5-768x346.png 768w, https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/pic5.png 1366w\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-49384\">The ribbon-cutting moment of the Van Ness BRT project. April 1, 2022<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mayor Breed was so excited to ride the 49- Van Ness Rapid bus to Galileo High School, the route she used to take when she was in high school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bus ride started smoothly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mayor Breed was overjoyed and told Tumlin that she would like the transit island along Van Ness Avenue to be kept clean all the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t even want to see a shred of cotton along Van Ness,\u201d the Mayor said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tumlin laughed and said that he would work with the San Francisco Department of Public Works on that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I pointed to all city officials on board the blight, the struggling, and the permanently shuttered businesses along Van Ness Avenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They just smiled at me without any comments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sadly, Van Ness Avenue, where an incompetent city government is on full display, is still a mess today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/pic9-572x257.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"572\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/pic9-572x257.png 572w, https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/pic9-960x432.png 960w, https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/pic9-768x346.png 768w, https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/pic9-1536x691.png 1536w, https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/pic9.png 1920w\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-49388\">Van Ness and Eddy. Aug.7, 2023<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/shattered-windows-shattered-dreams-for-business-owners\/\">Vandalism<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/a-tale-of-2-drug-dispensaries-on-sfs-van\/\">drug dealing<\/a>&nbsp;are rampant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2023\/08\/09\/san-francisco-apartment-building-at-center-of-encampment-lawsuit-goes-up-for-sale\/\">Property values have plummeted on Van Ness Avenue<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;even nonprofit organizations are not interested in buying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traffic is still bumper to bumper every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After we passed Post Street, the bus ride suddenly got bumpy and slow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we were approaching Clay Street, Mayor Breed said to Tumlin that the bus was too slow and she couldn\u2019t go all the way to Galileo High after all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And just like that, she immediately got off the bus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I asked Tumlin why the bus was slow and missed a few red-light stops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said that the bus driver was still not used to it and extra careful because of all the VIPs on the bus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We slowly but surely made it to&nbsp;Galileo High.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was certainly looking forward to the gourmet refreshments they would provide to the invited Van Ness residents and businesses after everything they must put up with during the 6 year-construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was expecting an exquisite buffet spread catered by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mccallssf.com\/\">McCalls<\/a>&nbsp;which usually caters to the city\u2019s galas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, here was what we got: Blocko\u2019s vegan tacos and lemonade concentrate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/pic10-572x258.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-49389\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/pic11-572x258.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-49390\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/pic12-572x258.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"572\" height=\"258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/pic12-572x258.png 572w, https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/pic12-960x432.png 960w, https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/pic12-768x346.png 768w, https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/pic12.png 1366w\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-49391\">Toks Omishakin, the Secretary of the California State Transportation Agency<br>stood next to Jeffrey Tumplin, the director of SFMTA.
