Democracy Defends The Amazon<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Democracy beat out fossil fuels in Ecuador last Sunday! In a historic referendum, Ecuadorian voters chose to halt all future oil drilling at a protected site in the Amazon, keeping 726 million barrels of oil in the ground, where it belongs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFinally, we are going to kick oil companies out of our territory!\u201d said<\/a> Indigenous Waorani leader Nemonte Nenquimo. \u201cThis is a major victory for all Indigenous peoples, for the animals, the plants, the spirits of the forest, and our climate!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The site is in Yasun\u00ed National Park, a UNESCO-designated<\/a> world biosphere reserve and home to two of the world\u2019s last voluntarily isolated Indigenous communities, the Tagaeri and Taromenane people. It\u2019s part of the world\u2019s most<\/a> important rainforest, where experts say resource extraction and deforestation are \u2014 to put it simply \u2014 very bad<\/a>. Grassroots activists gathered<\/a> hundreds of thousands of signatures to petition for the referendum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite political violence<\/a> leading up to the election, Ecuadorian voters were on a roll last Sunday: With a 68 percent margin, voters in Quito also blocked gold mining in Choc\u00f3 Andino, another sensitive and biodiverse forest region.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
