How?&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/author\/brett-wilkins\">BRETT WILKINS<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sep 14, 2023 (CommonDreams.org)<a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Declaring a #ClimateShutdown, hundreds of activists blockaded the entrances of Citibank&#8217;s Lower Manhattan headquarters Thursday morning to demand that the financial giant end fossil fuel financing and stop greenwashing its record of planet-heating investments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We&#8217;re shutting down Citibank, the world&#8217;s second-largest funder of fossil fuels,&#8221; the activist group&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/stop-the-money-pipeline\">Stop the Money Pipeline<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/StopMoneyPipe\/status\/1702304874111676752\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">explained<\/a>&nbsp;on X, the social platform formerly known as Twitter. &#8220;Citi&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citigroup.com\/global\/our-impact\/sustainability\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">says<\/a>&nbsp;it&#8217;s a climate leader, but it&#8217;s also the main financier of oil expansion in the Amazon.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jay Waxse of Climate Defiance told&nbsp;<em>Common Dreams&nbsp;<\/em>that 25 activists were arrested at the protest, including two of the group&#8217;s organizers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Citibank is &#8220;torching the planet,&#8221; said Waxse, &#8220;so the least we can do is disrupt business as usual.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Workers were talking. How?<\/p>&mdash; Climate Defiance (@ClimateDefiance) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ClimateDefiance\/status\/1702306386258936163?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 14, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a report published earlier this month by a coalition of green groups<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/jpmorgan-chase\">, JPMorgan Chase<\/a>&nbsp;($434.2 billion), Citibank ($332.9 billion),&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/wells-fargo\">Wells Fargo<\/a>&nbsp;($318.2 billion), and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/bank-of-america\">Bank of America<\/a>&nbsp;($281.2 billion) have been the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/big-banks-funding-fossil-fuels-since-paris\">world&#8217;s biggest fossil fuel financiers<\/a>&nbsp;since the Paris climate agreement took effect in 2016. Insurance companies provide insurance for new fossil fuel projects without which they could not be built.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The fossil fuel corporations driving the climate crisis depend on this support of the financial sector,&#8221; the group added. &#8220;That&#8217;s why we&#8217;re pushing banks, insurance companies, and asset managers to end fossil financing.
