{"id":28545,"date":"2023-09-16T13:32:04","date_gmt":"2023-09-16T20:32:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/occupysf.net\/?p=28545"},"modified":"2023-09-16T13:32:05","modified_gmt":"2023-09-16T20:32:05","slug":"this-is-our-defining-moment-uaw-launches-historic-strikes-against-big-three-automakers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/occupysf.net\/index.php\/2023\/09\/16\/this-is-our-defining-moment-uaw-launches-historic-strikes-against-big-three-automakers\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;This Is Our Defining Moment&#8217;: UAW Launches Historic Strikes Against Big Three Automakers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/media-library\/united-auto-workers-members-on-strike.jpg?id=39800944&amp;width=1200&amp;height=400&amp;quality=90&amp;coordinates=0%2C891%2C0%2C747\" alt=\"United Auto Workers members on strike\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>United Auto Workers members picket and hold signs outside of the UAW Local 900 headquarters across the street from the Ford Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan on September 15, 2023.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Photo: Matthew Hatcher\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;The money is there, the cause is righteous, the world is watching, and the UAW is ready to stand up,&#8221; said Shawn Fain, the union&#8217;s president.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/author\/jake-johnson\">JAKE JOHNSON<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sep 15, 2023 (CommonDreams.org)<a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The United Auto Workers union kicked off historic strikes against the Big Three U.S. car manufacturers early Friday morning after the companies failed to meet workers&#8217; demands for adequate pay increases and benefit improvements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initial wave of strikes hit select Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis facilities, with the union deploying a tactic it has described as a &#8221;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uaw.org\/standup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stand-up strike<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UAW members at General Motors&#8217; Wentzville Assembly in Missouri, Ford&#8217;s Michigan Assembly, and Stellantis&#8217; Toledo Assembly in Ohio were the first to walk off the job on Friday, and additional locals will be called on to strike in the coming days as negotiations continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those who remain on the job will be working under an expired collective bargaining agreement, though they still have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UAW\/status\/1702292433642352658\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">status quo protections<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The labor actions mark the first time the UAW has ever gone on strike against all three major automakers simultaneously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve been working hard, trying to reach a deal for economic and social justice for our members,&#8221; UAW president Shawn Fain said in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UAW\/status\/1702502512325214604\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">speech<\/a>&nbsp;late Thursday, just ahead of the midnight strike deadline. &#8220;We have been firm. We are committed to winning an agreement with the Big Three that reflects the incredible sacrifice and contributions UAW members have made to these companies.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The money is there, the cause is righteous, the world is watching, and the UAW is ready to stand up,&#8221; Fain added. &#8220;This is our defining moment.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">night shift is leaving the plant at GM Wentzville, with jubilant honks, the UAW strike has begun!! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/WHQ7Ms1HQa\">pic.twitter.com\/WHQ7Ms1HQa<\/a><\/p>&mdash; keith bb (@TRAILSANDWAYS) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TRAILSANDWAYS\/status\/1702534463354191994?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 15, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The companies&#8217; latest publicized offers to the UAW included raises of up to 20% over the course of a four-year contract, but the proposals thus far have fallen well short of the union&#8217;s demands on wages, cost-of-living adjustments, retiree benefits, and other key issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ford CEO Jim Farley, who brought in nearly $21 million in total compensation last year, told&nbsp;<em>CNN<\/em>&nbsp;that the UAW&#8217;s push for a near-40% wage increase would &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/detroit-three-strike-deadline-nears-sides-remain-far-apart-2023-09-14\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">put us out of business<\/a>,&#8221; a claim that Fain dismissed as a &#8220;joke.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The cost of labor for a vehicle is 5% of the vehicle,&#8221; Fain&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/business\/live-news\/strike-uaw-stellantis-ford-09-15-23\/h_f831655e4e7132d7d4a0598b6c9fab8c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;from the picket line outside Ford&#8217;s Michigan Assembly plant. &#8220;They could double our wages and not raise the prices of vehicles, and they would still make billions of dollars. It&#8217;s a lie like everything else that comes out of their mouths.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Between 2013 and 2022,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epi.org\/blog\/uaw-automakers-negotiations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to<\/a>&nbsp;an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/economic-policy-institute\">Economic Policy Institute<\/a>&nbsp;analysis released this week, the Big Three automakers saw roughly $250 billion in total profits\u2014an increase of 92%\u2014and the companies&#8217; CEOs received a 40% pay increase. The automakers also rewarded shareholders with $66 billion in dividend payouts and stock buybacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>U.S. autoworkers&#8217; wages, meanwhile, have declined by over 19% since the car industry&#8217;s 2008 crisis, during which workers gave up cost-of-living adjustments and other benefits to help keep the major automakers afloat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;As a single parent, I&#8217;m working paycheck to paycheck,&#8221; Adelisa LeBron, a striking Ford worker,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2023\/09\/15\/uaw-strike-updates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a><em>The Washington Post<\/em>. &#8220;I love the way Shawn is fighting for us, how he&#8217;s not going to settle.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Our employers only value one thing: profit. They do not value us, and the only way the working class advances is if we stand together.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/StandUpUAW?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#StandUpUAW<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Local12?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Local12<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/UFCkQpZai6\">pic.twitter.com\/UFCkQpZai6<\/a><\/p>&mdash; UAW (@UAW) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UAW\/status\/1702550440347349330?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 15, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his address late Thursday, Fain urged locals that are not currently on strike to &#8220;keep organizing&#8221; to &#8220;show the companies you are ready to join the stand-up strike at a moment&#8217;s notice.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This strategy will keep the companies guessing,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It will give our national negotiators maximum leverage and flexibility in bargaining. And if we need to go all out, we will. Everything is on the table.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Friday evening, the UAW is planning to hold what Fain dubbed a &#8220;mass rally&#8221; outside of a Ford building in downtown Detroit, where U.S. Sen.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/bernie-sanders\">Bernie Sanders<\/a>&nbsp;(I-Vt.) is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UAW\/status\/1701974659468529714\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">expected to appear<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We must show the world that our fight is a righteous fight,&#8221; said Fain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
