Or does it more broadly encompass some of the longstanding features of democracy \u2014 like the Electoral College, the nature of the Senate, the gerrymandering process \u2014 that sometimes thwarts the will of the majority?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In his answer, Biden more or less confirms that, yes, when he speaks of the threat to democracy, he specifically means the threat coming from the MAGA wing of the Republican Party. For Biden, the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence are the \u201cunderpinnings of democracy.\u201d The issue, for him, is that MAGA Republicans would try to overturn elections and \u201cprevent the people\u2019s voice\u201d from being expressed, not to mention heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jamelle Bouie became a New York Times Opinion columnist in 2019.
