Photo by Xueer Lu.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Hundreds gathered at Dolores Park Tuesday evening for a candlelight vigil demanding a cease-fire in Gaza after a blast in Gaza City today at a hospital&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/israel-palestinians-gaza-hamas-war-biden-rafah-e062825a375d9eb62e95509cab95b80c\">reportedly<\/a>&nbsp;killed at least 500 people.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/missionloca.s3.amazonaws.com\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/candlelight-vigil2-853x640.jpg\" alt=\"A group of people holding signs and candles in a park.\" class=\"wp-image-569815\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Crowd started to gather at the vigil. Photo by Xueer Lu.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Palestinians, Gaza health authorities and Arab leaders said that the explosion was the result of an Israeli airstrike, but Israeli officials are blaming an errant Palestinian rocket. Neither version could be confirmed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People in the crowd at the vigil held candles in their hands and stood in silence for about a minute, in memory of the dead.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/missionloca.s3.amazonaws.com\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/candlelight-vigil-3-853x640.jpg\" alt=\"A group of people holding candles in a park.\" class=\"wp-image-569813\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Crowd holding candlelights at the vigil. Photo by Xueer Lu.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ellen Brotsky with the Jewish Voice for Peace Bay Area chapter spoke publicly about anti-Semitism as well as Palestinian liberation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe understand that our Jewish safety from anti-Semitism comes through solidarity with all peoples, including the Palestinian people, and through our collective liberation together,\u201d Brotsky said. She also called for the crowd to call or write to Congress and elected representatives to demand a cease-fire in Gaza.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/missionloca.s3.amazonaws.com\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/crowd-at-vigil-853x640.jpg\" alt=\"A group of people holding candles in a park.\" class=\"wp-image-569817\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">People wearing Palestinian keffiyeh at the vigil. Photo by Xueer Lu.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Israel has been bombing the Gaza Strip for 11 days, following an attack on Israeli civilians by the Palestinian organization Hamas. Thousands of demonstrators marched down Market last Saturday, joining an \u201cAll Out For Gaza\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/bayarea\/article\/sf-palestinian-rally-18423188.php\">rally<\/a>&nbsp;in support of Palestinians who were trapped in Gaza amid the escalating military conflict.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Sunday night, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins called the solidarity march \u201ca pro-Hamas rally,\u201d in a since-deleted&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/sf\/article\/brooke-jenkins-hamas-tweet-deleted-18428837.php\">post<\/a>&nbsp;on X, formerly known as Twitter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis weekend a pro-Hamas rally was held downtown, where \u2018Death 2 Israel,\u2019 amongst other hateful rhetoric, was graffitied across buildings,\u201d Jenkins wrote in her post, which she deleted on Monday.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/missionloca.s3.amazonaws.com\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Jenkins-tweet-Hamas-930x488.jpg\" alt=\"A tweet about the tragic death of Brooke Jenkins in Gaza.\" class=\"wp-image-570107\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Leaders of organizations, including the Jewish Voice for Peace in the Bay Area and Arab Resource and Organizing Center, issued statements condemning Jenkins for inciting violence. They said rhetoric like Jenkins\u2019 led to the stabbing death of six-year-old Wadea Al-Fayoume in Chicago, Illinois. The Palestinian-American boy\u2019s landlord has been charged with murder in an alleged anti-Muslim hate crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs we fight and organize to free our people back home, to stand on the side of freedom with our people back home, we\u2019re also fighting alongside one another to ensure that what happened in Chicago doesn\u2019t happen in our backyard.\u201d said Lara Kiswani, executive director of the Arab Resource and Organizing Center, speaking with her 6-month old baby in her left arm and a mic in her right hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/missionloca.s3.amazonaws.com\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/crowd-at-vigil-from-back-853x640.jpg\" alt=\"A large group of people gathered in a park.\" class=\"wp-image-569816\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Hundreds showed up for the candlelight vigil. Photo by Xueer Lu.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Lulu Azzghayer a Palestinian mother in San Francisco, spoke to the crowd about her experience in Shuafat, a mostly Palestinian Arab neighborhood of East Jerusalem, and was shocked to learn how little people in the United States know about the lives of Palestinians.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Azzghayer shared that she was supposed to go on a college tour with her 16-year-old daughter now but instead she was here, speaking up against Israeli actions in Gaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After an hour and a half, the vigil approached its end. Some left, while others gathered closer and started chanting in Arabic: \u201cWith our blood, with our soul, we\u2019re gonna save Palestine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Karim Aburjeila, a 28-year-old software engineer from Gaza, lingered, holding a Palestinian flag in his hand.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aburjeila arrived in the United States alone three years ago. He said he has lost direct communication with all of his family members and friends who are currently in Gaza.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey have destroyed the signals, everything,\u201d Aburjeila said. \u201cSometimes I have to call somebody who is close to them to reach them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As he spoke, the crowd kept chanting.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFree, free, Palestine!\u201d they chanted, and \u201cFrom the river to the sea, Palestine will be free!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>https:\/\/videopress.com\/embed\/cr4HMtTh?cover=1&amp;preloadContent=metadata&amp;useAverageColor=1&amp;hd=1Vigil crowd chanting \u201cFree, free Palestine\u201d and \u201cLong live, Palestine\u201d.
