Since its inception, users have contributed over 140,000 submissions in 23 languages to the platform.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Queering_the_Map#cite_note-auto2-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2017, Canadian artist and designer&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lucas_LaRochelle\">Lucas LaRochelle<\/a>&nbsp;began working on&nbsp;<em>Queering the Map<\/em>&nbsp;for a class project at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Concordia_University\">Concordia University<\/a>&nbsp;in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Montreal\">Montreal<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Queering_the_Map#cite_note-auto-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;The project was launched in May of the same year. LaRochelle has cited the lasting impact of personal memories on their perceptions towards places and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sara_Ahmed\">Sara Ahmed<\/a>\u2018s ideas on queerness as an orientation towards space as influences behind the project. For LaRochelle, a queer space can be a relational experience created by and\/or shared between queer people.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Queering_the_Map#cite_note-auto1-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;LaRochelle has stated that their main intent for initiating the project was to archive these spaces, which transcend the traditional notion of queer spaces as fixed places (like businesses or neighborhoods) that are reclaimed by clearly defined communities.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Queering_the_Map#cite_note-auto2-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In February 2018, Montreal DJ Frankie Teardrop shared Queering the Map on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Facebook\">Facebook<\/a>, greatly increasing its visibility.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Queering_the_Map#cite_note-auto-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;During this month, the number of pins on the map increased from 600 to 6,500 within a three-day span. The same month, a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cyberattack\">cyberattack<\/a>&nbsp;generating pins with comments in support of U.S. president&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Donald_Trump\">Donald Trump<\/a>&nbsp;forced LaRochelle to take down the site and ask for help on its URL.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Queering_the_Map#cite_note-auto2-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Over the next two months, 8 volunteers developed a more secure version of the site on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/GitHub\">GitHub<\/a>,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Queering_the_Map#cite_note-auto-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;and the project qualified for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cloudflare\">Cloudflare<\/a>\u2018s free Project Galileo&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Computer_security\">cybersecurity<\/a>&nbsp;service.
