One example: the trip from\u00a0<a class=\"\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/local\/article\/lafayette-reservoir-is-locals-favorite-bay-area-18273177.php\" target=\"_blank\">the East Bay<\/a>\u00a0into San Francisco. The trip is often a\u00a0<a class=\"\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/tech\/article\/sfcta-report-shows-uber-lyft-bad-traffic-17923923.php\" target=\"_blank\">traffic-choked<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/politics\/article\/bay-area-lawmakers-squabble-over-bridge-toll-18283244.php\" target=\"_blank\">expensive<\/a>\u00a0pain if you&#8217;re driving, or can be a delayed, crowded annoyance if you&#8217;re taking\u00a0<a class=\"\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/local\/article\/bart-train-18147964.php\" target=\"_blank\">BART<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2013, however, there&#8217;s been a third option: the\u00a0<a class=\"\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/511.org\/biking\/bay-bridge-trail\" target=\"_blank\">Bay Bridge Trail<\/a>. You can&#8217;t walk or bike across the full span of the\u00a0<a class=\"\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/obscuresf\/article\/nimitz-mansion-hidden-under-bay-bridge-17999245.php\" target=\"_blank\">Bay Bridge<\/a>\u00a0just yet (we&#8217;ll get to that later), but the journey from Oakland to\u00a0<a class=\"\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/local\/article\/yerba-buena-island-residents-evicted-17355407.php\" target=\"_blank\">Yerba Buena Island<\/a>\u00a0sure is beautiful. This is confusing, but bear with me: the Bay Bridge Trail is part of the&nbsp;<a class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/local\/article\/san-francisco-bay-trail-18117346.php\">San Francisco Bay Trail<\/a>&nbsp;but it is not part of the<a class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/local\/article\/bay-area-ridge-trail-18308977.php\">&nbsp;Bay Area Ridge Trail<\/a>. Furthermore, don&#8217;t confuse the Bay Bridge with the&nbsp;<a class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/local\/article\/golden-gate-bridge-17635462.php\">Golden Gate Bridge<\/a>. The Bay Bridge spans from&nbsp;<a class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/local\/article\/oakland-california-17862883.php\">Oakland<\/a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/local\/article\/soma-san-francisco-18096095.php\">San Francisco&#8217;s downtown<\/a>.&nbsp;Thanks to the Bay Bridge Trail, you can pedal over the eastern span of the bridge from Oakland to Yerba Buena Island, just over half the bridge&#8217;s length.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What can you see from the Bay Bridge Trail?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can kick off your trip at Oakland&#8217;s&nbsp;<a class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ebparks.org\/parks\/judge-john-sutter\">Judge John Sutter Regional Shoreline<\/a>. The park, which opened in October 2020, offers gorgeous views of the Bay from a pier built on pilings from&nbsp;<a class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sQnSVK51_wA\">the original Bay Bridge<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The vistas are even more unique once you get on the Bay Bridge Trail itself. You&#8217;ll be\u00a0treated to\u00a0a mix of coastal panoramas and close-up details of some remarkable bridge architecture. Be sure to stop at a few of the seven &#8220;belvederes,&#8221; observation platforms for walkers and cyclists to pause and take in the city from afar and the water far below. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you get to Yerba Buena Island, your first stop is\u00a0<a class=\"\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.bayareametro.gov\/posts\/graceful-bimla-honored-new-yerba-buena-island-public-access-pier\" target=\"_blank\">Bimla Rhinehart Vista Point<\/a>. Similar to its park mate across the water, the park was built on leftover piers from the old bridge and incorporates salvaged trusses into its design. Since it sits under the Bay Bridge itself, this is one of the best spots to appreciate the enormity of this piece of engineering. While you catch your breath, you can also check out the nearby historic\u00a0<a class=\"\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/yerba-buena-torpedo-storehouse-building-262\" target=\"_blank\">Torpedo Storehouse<\/a>, the last remnant of the Army base that once stood here. (Be prepared for the fact that there&#8217;s a steep hill between the bridge and the vista point, since you&#8217;re coming down to sea level. The island has long been famous for its jaw-dropping views of the&nbsp;<a class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/local\/article\/san-francisco-floating-cube-tower-17484252.php\">San Francisco skyline<\/a>. (For one highlight, follow the&nbsp;<a class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenbelt.org\/blog\/urban-outing-treasure-island-great-views-of-san-francisco\/\">Treasure Island Perimeter Path<\/a>&nbsp;along the north side to Treasure Island View Point, although you can&#8217;t really go wrong with the views from anywhere along the shore here.) The area is entering a period of intense development, meaning there will soon be much more to see and&nbsp;do here; poking around the&nbsp;<a class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/sf.gov\/information\/treasure-island-public-art\">blossoming public art scene<\/a>&nbsp;is a fun way to explore more of what&#8217;s to come. Bikers arriving by BART should ride west down 40th Street from the&nbsp;<a class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bart.gov\/stations\/mcar\">MacArthur BART station<\/a>, continuing on as 40th turns into&nbsp;Shellmound. You&#8217;ll find the trailhead across the street from IKEA in Emeryville. If you&#8217;re coming on foot, take the&nbsp;<a class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/emerygoround.com\/\">Emery-Go-Round<\/a>&nbsp;Powell shuttle or&nbsp;<a class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.actransit.org\/bus-lines-schedules\/26\">AC Transit Line 26<\/a>, getting off at the IKEA stop. Access is slightly more complicated but also viable from&nbsp;<a class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bart.gov\/stations\/19th\">19th Street BART<\/a>, via a short bike ride on Broadway, West Grand Avenue and Maritime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Travelers wanting to make this trip from San Francisco will unfortunately need to take the bus all the way across the bridge first. To do so, you can take the\u00a0<a class=\"\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.actransit.org\/bus-lines-schedules\/NL\" target=\"_blank\">AC Transit Transbay NL<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a class=\"\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.actransit.org\/bus-lines-schedules\/O\" target=\"_blank\">O bus\u00a0<\/a>from the<a class=\"\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/local\/article\/salesforce-park-17752172.php\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0Salesforce<\/a>\u00a0Transit Center and get off at the Toll Plaza stop on the Bay Bridge. Then you can bike out to the island and back, or take the ferry onward to downtown (see below).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tip<\/strong>:<em>\u00a0<\/em>Don&#8217;t forget that AC Transit has bike racks on the front of its busses. State and federal environmental analyses for the skyway are projected to finish in 2024, with the hope that (with funding secured) the path could open in 2030.&nbsp;Earthquake safety, maintenance access, boat clearance and possible strong winds all present obstacles to successful design and execution of the skyway. But with estimated costs in the hundreds of millions of dollars, funding remains the project&#8217;s biggest hurtle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The good news: Even without this addition, you&#8217;ll soon be able to finish your bike ride across the Bay with&nbsp;<a class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/sanfranciscobayferry.com\/fta-electric-ferry-grant-press-release-2022\">an electric ferry ride<\/a>&nbsp;from Treasure Island to San Francisco&#8217;s&nbsp;<a class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/local\/article\/Mission-Bay-sidewalks-are-sinking-17228325.php\">Mission Bay<\/a>&nbsp;starting in 2025. Even now, there&#8217;s a&nbsp;<a class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/tisf.com\/ferry-service\/?bookingTypeId=1105850&amp;propertyID=propsf\">limited interim service ferry<\/a>&nbsp;that currently runs this route.
