Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) has officially become the first member of the Senate to call for a ceasefire&nbsp;between Hamas and Israel. Since the October 7 attack by Hamas that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/10\/28\/middleeast\/israel-hamas-gaza-war-explained-week-3-mime-intl\/index.html\">killed<\/a>&nbsp;more than 1,400 people in Israel, the nation\u2019s military has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/wireStory\/gaza-health-ministry-9000-palestinians-killed-war-women-104567797\">reportedly<\/a>&nbsp;killed more than 9,000 Palestinian people in the territory. In an interview with CNN, Durbin urged the immediate release of Hamas\u2019 hundreds of hostages and the expansion of&nbsp;conversations between Israeli and Palestinian officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s face it, this has gone on for decades,\u201d said Durbin. \u201cWhatever the rationale for the beginning, it has now reached an intolerable level. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), have also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=F6fnhal_NYs&amp;ab_channel=MiddleEastEye\">called<\/a>&nbsp;for a ceasefire. Last week, Rep. Majorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) attempted to censure Tlaib, the only Palestinian-American in Congress, for engaging in \u201cantisemitic activity\u201d after she expressed concern over the United States\u2019 role in supplying Israel with weapons. Greene also falsely accused Tlaib of \u201cleading an insurrection\u201d for reportedly attending a pro-Palestine&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/tlaib-refuses-apologize-blaming-israel-gaza-hospital-blast\/story?id=104085727\">demonstration<\/a>&nbsp;organized by a Jewish advocacy group.&nbsp;The House&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/congress-house-censure-resolution-greene-tlaib-48d109c21c11f8df80053d15ff7b77b7\">rejected<\/a>&nbsp;the censure on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAchieving a just and lasting peace where Israelis and Palestinians have equal rights and freedoms,\u201d Tlaib said in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tlaib.house.gov\/posts\/tlaib-statement-on-resolution-that-doesnt-mourn-palestinian-lives\">statement<\/a>, \u201cand where no person lives in fear for their safety, requires ending the blockade, occupation, and dehumanizing system of apartheid.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">WHO DOESN\u2019T LOVE A POSITIVE STORY\u2014OR TWO?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGreat journalism really does make a difference in this world: it can even save kids.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s what a civil rights lawyer wrote to Julia Lurie, the day after her&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/crime-justice\/2023\/10\/foster-kids-psychiatric-hospitals-universal-health-services-uhs-alaska-cps\/?keycode=7AHPB43|PAHPB43\">major investigation<\/a>&nbsp;into a psychiatric hospital chain that uses foster children as \u201ccash cows\u201d published, letting her know he was using her findings that same day in a hearing to keep a child out of one of the facilities we investigated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s awesome. As is the fact that Julia, who spent a full year reporting this challenging story, promptly heard from a Senate committee that will use her work in their own investigation of Universal Health Services. There\u2019s no doubt her revelations will continue to have a big impact in the months and years to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Like another story about&nbsp;<em>Mother Jones<\/em>\u2019 real-world impact.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This one, a multiyear investigation, published in 2021,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2021\/09\/sugar-central-romana-fanjul-dominican-republic\/?keycode=7AHPB43|PAHPB43\">exposed conditions in sugar work camps<\/a>&nbsp;in the Dominican Republic owned by Central Romana\u2014the conglomerate behind brands like C&amp;H and Domino, whose product ends up in our Hershey bars and other sweets. A year ago, the Biden administration banned sugar imports from Central Romana. And just recently, we learned of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2023\/10\/central-romana-homeland-security-sugar\/?keycode=7AHPB43|PAHPB43\">a previously undisclosed investigation<\/a>&nbsp;from the Department of Homeland Security, looking into working conditions at Central Romana.
