{"id":29752,"date":"2023-11-08T20:53:54","date_gmt":"2023-11-09T04:53:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/occupysf.net\/?p=29752"},"modified":"2023-11-08T20:53:55","modified_gmt":"2023-11-09T04:53:55","slug":"the-new-historians","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/occupysf.net\/index.php\/2023\/11\/08\/the-new-historians\/","title":{"rendered":"THE NEW HISTORIANS"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not to be confused with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_historicism\">New historicism<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<strong>New Historians<\/strong>&nbsp;(<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hebrew_language\">Hebrew<\/a>:&nbsp;\u05d4\u05d4\u05d9\u05e1\u05d8\u05d5\u05e8\u05d9\u05d5\u05e0\u05d9\u05dd \u05d4\u05d7\u05d3\u05e9\u05d9\u05dd,&nbsp;<em>HaHistoryonim HaChadashim<\/em>) are a loosely defined group of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Israel\">Israeli<\/a>&nbsp;historians who have challenged traditional versions of Israeli history, including Israel\u2019s role in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1948_Palestinian_expulsion_and_flight\">1948 Palestinian expulsion and flight<\/a>&nbsp;and Arab willingness to discuss peace. The term was coined in 1988 by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Benny_Morris\">Benny Morris<\/a>, one of the leading New Historians. According to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ethan_Bronner\">Ethan Bronner<\/a>&nbsp;of&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_New_York_Times\">The New York Times<\/a><\/em>, the New Historians have sought to advance the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peace_process_in_the_Israeli%E2%80%93Palestinian_conflict\">peace process<\/a>&nbsp;in the region.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Historians#cite_note-Bronner-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Much of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Primary_source\">primary source<\/a>&nbsp;material used by the group comes from Israeli government papers that were newly available as a result of being declassified&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thirty_year_rule#Israel\">thirty years<\/a>&nbsp;after the founding of Israel.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Historians#cite_note-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;The perception of a new historiographical current emerged with the publications of four scholars in the 1980s:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Benny_Morris\">Benny Morris<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ilan_Papp%C3%A9\">Ilan Papp\u00e9<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Avi_Shlaim\">Avi Shlaim<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Simha_Flapan\">Simha Flapan<\/a>. Subsequently, many other historians and historical sociologists, among them&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tom_Segev\">Tom Segev<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hillel_Cohen\">Hillel Cohen<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baruch_Kimmerling\">Baruch Kimmerling<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joel_S._Migdal\">Joel Migdal<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Idith_Zertal\">Idith Zertal<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shlomo_Sand\">Shlomo Sand<\/a>&nbsp;have been identified with the movement.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Historians#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Historians#cite_note-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Initially dismissed by the public, the New Historians eventually gained legitimacy in Israel in the 1990s.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Historians#cite_note-Bronner-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Some of their conclusions have been incorporated into the political ideology of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Post-Zionists\">post-Zionists<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Main arguments<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Avi_Shlaim\">Avi Shlaim<\/a>&nbsp;described the New Historians\u2019 differences from what he termed the \u201cofficial history\u201d in the following terms:<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Historians#cite_note-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<ul>\n<li>The official version said that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Kingdom\">Britain<\/a>&nbsp;tried to prevent the establishment of a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jewish_state\">Jewish state<\/a>; the New Historians claimed that it tried to prevent the establishment of a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Palestinian_state\">Palestinian state<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The official version said that the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Palestinian_people\">Palestinians<\/a>&nbsp;fled their homes of their own free will; the New Historians said that the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Palestinian_refugee\">refugees were chased out or expelled<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The official version said that the balance of power was in favour of the Arabs; the New Historians said that Israel had the advantage both in manpower and in arms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The official version said that the Arabs had a coordinated plan to destroy Israel; the New Historians said that the Arabs were divided<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The official version said that Arab intransigence prevented peace; the New Historians said that Israel is primarily to blame for the \u201cdead end\u201d.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Historians#cite_note-rapaport-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Papp\u00e9 suggests that the Zionist leaders intended to displace most Palestinian Arabs; Morris believes the displacement happened in the heat of war. According to the New Historians, Israel and Arab countries each have their share of responsibility for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arab%E2%80%93Israeli_conflict\">Arab\u2013Israeli conflict<\/a>&nbsp;and the Palestinian plight.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Historians#cite_note-rapaport-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Influence on traditional Israeli historical narrative and public opinion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Michal Ben-Josef Hirsch argues that, prior to the advent of the New Historians, \u201cIsraelis held to a one-sided historical narrative of the circumstances leading to the creation of the Palestinian refugee problem, and that any other counter-narratives were taboo.\u201d According to Ben-Josef Hirsch, the conclusions of the New Historians, and the wide-ranging debate that they provoked, ended that taboo and changed the way in which the Palestinian refugee problem and its causes were viewed in Israel. Ben-Josef Hirsch says that the traditional Israeli narrative, that Arabs were responsible for the exodus of the Palestinians, held from 1948 to the late 1990s. She says that the arguments of the New Historians significantly challenged that narrative, leading to a broad debate both in academia and in the wider public discourse, including journalists and columnists, politicians, public figures, and the general public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ben-Josef Hirsch believes that a significant change has occurred in how the Palestinian refugee issue is viewed in Israeli society since the late 1990s, with a more complex narrative being more accepted; it recognizes there were instances where Israeli forces expelled Palestinians with the knowledge and authorization of the Israeli leadership. Ben-Josef Hirsch attributes that change to the work of the New Historians and the resulting debate.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Historians#cite_note-BJH-7\">[7]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The New Historians gained respect by the 1990s. A 1998 series on state television marking Israel\u2019s 50th anniversary drew much from their work, as did textbooks introduced to ninth graders in 1999.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Historians#cite_note-Bronner-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Critics of the New Historians have acknowledged this shift.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Avi_Beker\">Avi Beker<\/a>, writing in the&nbsp;<em>Jerusalem Post<\/em>, states that the effect of the New Historians work on the history of the Arab\u2013Israeli conflict \u201ccannot be exaggerated\u201d. He says the work of the New Historians is now the mainstream in academia, and that their influence was not confined to intellectual circles. What were their intentions? Who was forced to mount a defence? What were Israel\u2019s casualties?<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Historians#cite_note-Fabricating_Karsh-9\">[9]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Early in 2002, the most famous of the new historians, Benny Morris, publicly reversed some of his personal political positions,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Historians#cite_note-10\">[10]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;though he has not withdrawn any of his historical writings. Morris says he did not use much of the newly available archival material when he wrote his book: \u201cWhen writing&nbsp;<em>The Birth of the Palestinian Refugee Problem 1947\u20131949<\/em>&nbsp;in the mid-1980s, I had no access to the materials in the IDFA [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Israel_Defense_Forces\">IDF<\/a>&nbsp;Archive] or the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Haganah\">Haganah<\/a>&nbsp;Archive and precious little to first-hand military materials deposited elsewhere.\u201d<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Historians#cite_note-Rogan_and_Shlaim-11\">[11]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anita_Shapira\">Anita Shapira<\/a>&nbsp;stated that both&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Avi_Shlaim\">Avi Shlaim<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Benny_Morris\">Benny Morris<\/a>&nbsp;\u201cmake only meager use of original Arab sources\u201d with most such references being in \u201cEnglish translation\u201d, and that Shlaim\u2019s claim that he \u201chas no need of Arab documents\u201d, and Morris\u2019 claim that \u201che is able to extrapolate the Arab positions from the Israeli documentation\u201d results in \u201cobvious distortions\u201d.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Historians#cite_note-12\">[12]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Israeli historian&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yoav_Gelber\">Yoav Gelber<\/a>&nbsp;criticized New Historians in an interview, saying that aside from Benny Morris, they did not contribute to the research of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1948_Arab%E2%80%93Israeli_War\">1948 Arab\u2013Israeli War<\/a>&nbsp;in any way. He did however note that they contributed to the public discourse about the war.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Historians#cite_note-war60years-13\">[13]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Post-Zionism<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>See also:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Post-Zionism\">Post-Zionism<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some commentators have argued that the historiography of the New Historians has both drawn inspiration from, and lent impetus to, a movement known as post-Zionism. Generally the term \u201cpost-Zionist\u201d is self-identified by Jewish Israelis who are critical of the Zionist enterprise and are seen by Zionists as undermining the Israeli national ethos.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Historians#cite_note-14\">[14]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Post-Zionists differ from Zionists on many important details, such as the status of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Law_of_return\">law of return<\/a>&nbsp;and other sensitive issues. Post-Zionists view the Palestinian dispossession as central to the creation of the state of Israel.<sup>[<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Citation_needed\">citation needed<\/a><\/em>]<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Baruch Kimmerling criticised the focus on \u201cpost-Zionism\u201d, arguing that debates around the term were \u201cnonsense and semi-professional and mainly political\u201d. According to Kimmerling the term has been arbitrarily applied to any research on Israeli history, society or politics that was critical or perceived to be critical. Kimmerling saw this discussion as damaging to research in these areas because it took the focus away from the quality and merit of scholarship and onto whether the work should be characterized as Zionist or post-Zionist. Further, Kimmerling asserted that academics were diverted away from serious research onto polemical issues and that the environment this fostered inhibited the research of younger academics who were fearful of being labeled as belonging to one of the two camps.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Historians#cite_note-BK2004-15\">[15]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Benny Morris<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The \u201cOld Historians\u201d lived through 1948 as highly committed adult participants in the epic, glorious rebirth of the Jewish commonwealth.
