Jim Justice\u2014but expressed frustration over the conservative senator&#8217;s legacy of tanking the Democratic Party&#8217;s agenda as leaders insisted he was the only Democrat who could possibly win the approval of voters in his home state of West Virginia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After Manchin&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/joe-manchin-senate-reelection_n_654d34c8e4b09c9500a96c75\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">released a video<\/a>&nbsp;announcing he will retire from the Senate seat he&#8217;s held since 2010, former Ohio state Sen.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/nina-turner\">Nina Turner<\/a>&nbsp;(D) noted that economic justice and rights advocates have long been told they &#8220;had to sacrifice every progressive reform so we could hold on to a blue seat in West Virginia.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Now, he&#8217;s vacating the seat,&#8221; said Turner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I\u2019m old enough to remember when neoliberals said we had to sacrifice every progressive reform so we could hold on to a blue seat in West Virginia.<br><br>Now, he\u2019s vacating the seat. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/x3Cs736xVJ\">https:\/\/t.co\/x3Cs736xVJ<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Nina Turner (@ninaturner) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ninaturner\/status\/1722702737056375158?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 9, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The senator has outraged progressives in recent years by refusing to join his party in backing broadly popular reforms. He made numerous demands to reduce the anti-poverty and climate provisions in President Joe Biden&#8217;s signature Build Back Better Act in 2021 before finally killing the bill over its inclusion of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/congress-child-tax-credit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">expanded child tax credit<\/a>\u2014a program that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeswv.com\/news\/local_news\/sen-joe-manchin-helped-kill-the-expanded-child-tax-credit-now-more-west-virginia-kids\/article_35fb056e-58b3-11ee-953d-c722a348224e.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more than 300,000 children<\/a>&nbsp;in his own state benefited from before it expired but that Manchin&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2021\/12\/20\/displaying-inhuman-disdain-working-families-manchin-said-child-tax-credit-would-be\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">falsely claimed<\/a>&nbsp;would be used by parents to buy drugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also joined Republicans in 2022 to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/03\/01\/shameful-manchin-votes-senate-gop-filibuster-abortion-rights-bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">block<\/a>&nbsp;legislation codifying abortion rights months before the U.S. Supreme Court overturned&nbsp;<em>Roe v. Wade&nbsp;<\/em>and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/senate-mountain-valley-pipeline\">helped<\/a>&nbsp;the GOP push to include language in a debt limit deal this year that would expedite the construction of the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) in his state. Local advocates have denounced the project, which could lead to fossil fuel emissions equivalent to dozens of coal-fired power plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The state,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/powhr.org\/manchin-wont-seek-reelection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;Denali Nalamalapu, communications director of the Protect Our Water, Heritage, Rights Coalition, is now witnessing &#8220;firsthand the repercussions of Sen. Joe Manchin&#8217;s insatiable greed.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;During his time in office, Manchin served the fossil fuel industry and lined his pockets with the payoff,&#8221; said Nalamalapu. &#8220;While he parades around his &#8216;victory&#8217; in fast-tracking MVP construction, his real climate legacy is the mortal threat to Appalachians and the planet posed by the unnecessary, reckless, fracked gas project.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nalamalapu expressed hope that West Virginians may ultimately be represented by &#8220;a climate champion who will serve their interests in the broader global shift towards a renewable future, not a robber baron who scurries away once he has maxed out his political fossil fuel profits.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Manchin suggested his political career may not be over as he said he will be &#8220;traveling the country and speaking out to see if there is an interest in creating a movement to mobilize the middle and bring Americans together&#8221;\u2014which former U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Juli\u00e1n Castro&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JulianCastro\/status\/1722701119032377466\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">translated<\/a>&nbsp;as: &#8220;Stay tuned.
