Otherwise, we risk becoming accessories to genocide.&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/author\/brett-wilkins\">BRETT WILKINS<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nov 10, 2023 (CommonDreams.org)<a href=\"https:\/\/giving.commondreams.org\/-\/XKQWGZVR\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hundreds of international media professionals have signed on to an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.protect-journalists.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">open letter<\/a>&nbsp;published Thursday demanding an end to Israel&#8217;s killing of journalists in Gaza and urging Western newsrooms to call Israeli crimes\u2014including &#8220;apartheid, ethnic cleansing, and genocide&#8221;\u2014by their names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The urgency of this moment cannot be overstated,&#8221; the journalists wrote. &#8220;It is imperative that we change course.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Citing the Committee to Protect Journalists\u2014which&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.org\/2023\/11\/journalist-casualties-in-the-israel-gaza-conflict\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">says<\/a>&nbsp;at least 34 Palestinian media professionals have been killed during Israel&#8217;s monthlong assault on Gaza\u2014the letter states that &#8220;as reporters, editors, photographers, producers, and other workers in newsrooms around the world, we are appalled at the slaughter of our colleagues and their families by the Israeli military and government.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We are writing to urge an end to violence against journalists in Gaza and to call on Western newsroom leaders to be clear-eyed in coverage of Israel&#8217;s repeated atrocities against Palestinians,&#8221; the letter continues, adding that journalists have been killed while &#8220;visibly working as press, as well as at night in their homes.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;An&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/reuters-journalist-targeted\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">investigation<\/a>&nbsp;from Reporters Without Borders also shows deliberate targeting of journalists during two October 13 Israeli strikes in south Lebanon, which killed&nbsp;<em>Reuters<\/em>&nbsp;videographer Issam Abdallah and injured six other journalists,&#8221; the signers said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Hundreds of journalists have signed an open letter condemning Israel\u2019s killing of reporters in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Gaza?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Gaza<\/a> and slamming Western media\u2019s coverage of the war. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ZBnimaubdA\">https:\/\/t.co\/ZBnimaubdA<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Ramzy Baroud (@RamzyBaroud) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RamzyBaroud\/status\/1723042469078868365?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 10, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Reporters&#8217; families have been killed, too,&#8221; the letter points out. &#8220;Wael Dahdouh,&nbsp;<em>Al Jazeera<\/em>&#8216;s Gaza bureau chief and a household name in the Arab world,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/al-jazeera-reporter-family\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">learned on-air<\/a>&nbsp;October 25 that his wife, children, and other relatives had been killed in an Israeli airstrike. A November 5 strike on the home of journalist Mohammad Abu Hassir of&nbsp;<em>Wafa News Agency<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2023\/11\/7\/palestinian-journalist-mohammad-abu-hasira-killed-in-israeli-strike-on-gaza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">killed<\/a>&nbsp;him and 42 family members.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The letter notes that around 50 media headquarters have been hit in Gaza during the war, which is consistent with Israel&#8217;s &#8221;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.org\/reports\/2023\/05\/deadly-pattern-20-journalists-died-by-israeli-military-fire-in-22-years-no-one-has-been-held-accountable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">decadeslong pattern<\/a>&nbsp;of lethally targeting journalists,&#8221; including Palestinian American&nbsp;<em>Al Jazeera<\/em>&nbsp;reporter&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/09\/21\/probe-shows-israeli-killing-journalist-deliberate-family-turns-icc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shireen Abu Akleh<\/a>&nbsp;last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The media professionals signing the letter said they are heeding a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pjs.ps\/palestinian-journalists-syndicate-statement-some-of-the-global-medias-unethical-coverage-is-facilitating-genocide-in-gaza\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">call<\/a>&nbsp;from the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate for Western reporters to &#8220;take action to stop the horrifying bombardment of our people in Gaza.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We stand with our colleagues in Gaza and herald their brave efforts at reporting in the midst of carnage and destruction,&#8221; they wrote. &#8220;Without them, many of the horrors on the ground would remain invisible.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&quot;We condemn Israel&#39;s killing of journalists in Gaza and urge integrity in Western media coverage of Israel&#39;s atrocities against Palestinians.&quot; An open letter from reporters\/journalists for US media outlets:<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/goEAnSMno1\">https:\/\/t.co\/goEAnSMno1<\/a><\/p>&mdash; jeremy scahill (@jeremyscahill) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jeremyscahill\/status\/1722703837134278730?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 9, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We also hold Western newsrooms accountable for dehumanizing rhetoric that has served to justify ethnic cleansing of Palestinians,&#8221; the signers asserted. &#8220;Double standards, inaccuracies, and fallacies abound in American publications and have been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/d-scholarship.pitt.edu\/7515\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">well-documented<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The letter accuses Western media of undermining Palestinian, Arab, and Muslim perspectives, printing &#8220;misinformation spread by Israeli officials,&#8221; and failing to &#8220;scrutinize indiscriminate killing of civilians in Gaza\u2014committed with the support of the U.S. government.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After HonestReporting, an Israeli media watchdog, made&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/honestreporting.com\/photographers-without-borders-ap-reuters-pictures-of-hamas-atrocities-raise-ethical-questions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unsubstantiated claims<\/a>&nbsp;that reporters from media outlets including&nbsp;<em>CNN<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>The New York Times<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>The Associated Press<\/em>, and&nbsp;<em>Reuters&nbsp;<\/em>may have been embedded with Hamas during its October 7 attacks on Israel, in which four Israeli journalists were among the more than 1,400 people killed, some Israeli and U.S. media&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/opinion\/article-772565\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ran with the story<\/a>&nbsp;as if it were a proven fact. Benny Gantz, a member of Israel&#8217;s war Cabinet, took to social media to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/gantzbe\/status\/1722535046400061853\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ominously suggest<\/a>&nbsp;that journalists should be killed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HonestReporting executive director Gil Hoffman subsequently&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/israel-hamas-photographers-attack-200be1ba47361f1c1fc113cdaeb65d04\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">walked back<\/a>&nbsp;the group&#8217;s claims, saying it was just &#8220;raising questions.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">These loud open threats of violence against journalists and charges of collaboration are wildly dangerous. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/iy6CbJT3RS\">https:\/\/t.co\/iy6CbJT3RS<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Chris Hayes (@chrislhayes) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chrislhayes\/status\/1722764235590033617?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 9, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Western media outlets have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/media-gaza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">agreed<\/a>&nbsp;to let Israeli military officials vet all materials recorded by their reporters embedded with Israel Defense Forces units during the invasion of Gaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The open letter laments that although U.N. experts have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/gaza-genocide-warning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">warned<\/a>&nbsp;that Palestinians are &#8220;at grave risk of genocide&#8221; in the besieged strip, &#8220;Western outlets remain hesitant to quote genocide experts and accurately describe the existential threat unfolding in Gaza.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This is our job: to hold power to account. Otherwise, we risk becoming accessories to genocide,&#8221; the signers stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We are renewing the call for journalists to tell the full truth without fear or favor,&#8221; they wrote. &#8220;To use precise terms that are well-defined by international human rights organizations, including &#8216;apartheid,&#8217; &#8216;ethnic cleansing,&#8217; and &#8216;genocide.&#8217; To recognize that contorting our words to hide evidence of war crimes or Israel&#8217;s oppression of Palestinians is journalistic malpractice and an abdication of moral clarity.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Contorting our words to hide evidence of war crimes or Israel&#8217;s oppression of Palestinians is journalistic malpractice and an abdication of moral clarity.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Gaza Health Ministry&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.palestinechronicle.com\/gaza-live-blog-un-half-of-gaza-is-destroyed-gaza-hospitals-targeted-nyt-us-wants-israel-to-speed-up-operation-day-35\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>&nbsp;Friday that at least 11,078 Palestinians\u2014including more than 3,000 women and over 4,500 children\u2014have been killed and upward of 27,000 injured by Israeli bombs and bullets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;U.N. Relief and Works Agency&nbsp;for Palestine Refugees in the Near East\u2014which says Israeli attacks have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unrwa.org\/newsroom\/videos\/unrwa-staff-killed-gaza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">killed<\/a>&nbsp;more than 100 of its workers\u2014reported earlier this week that 70% of Gaza&#8217;s 2.3 million people have been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/israel-hamas-war-gaza-strip-palestinian-civilian-deaths-displaced-after-1-month\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">forcibly displaced<\/a>, while an official at the U.N. Development Program&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/middle-east\/half-of-gazas-housing-destroyed-in-1-month-by-israeli-war-un\/3049209\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;Thursday that half of the homes in Gaza have been destroyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For some of the journalists, signing the open letter was a risky move. Media professionals have resigned or been fired from their jobs for taking a stand against Israeli atrocities on their time off from work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Award-winning&nbsp;<em>New York Times<\/em>&nbsp;reporter Jazmine Hughes, for example,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/style\/media\/2023\/11\/04\/nyt-jazmine-hughes-resigns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">resigned<\/a>&nbsp;after signing an open letter condemning Israeli genocide in Gaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">N.Y. Earlier during the war, Jackson Frank,&nbsp;<em>PhillyVoice<\/em>&#8216;s freshly hired Philadelphia 76ers basketball team beat writer, was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2023\/oct\/10\/philadelphia-sports-reporter-loses-job-pro-palestinian-comments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">terminated<\/a>&nbsp;for expressing solidarity with Palestinians on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Palestinian Canadian journalist Zahraa Al-Akhrass was fired last week by&nbsp;<em>Global News<\/em>&nbsp;over pro-Palestine social media posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/Cy_YCzYLGpc\/embed\/captioned\/?cr=1&amp;v=4&amp;wp=538&amp;rd=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org&amp;rp=%2Fnews%2Fjournalist-gaza#%7B%22ci%22%3A0%2C%22os%22%3A18948.599999904633%7D\">https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/Cy_YCzYLGpc\/embed\/captioned\/?cr=1&amp;v=4&amp;wp=538&amp;rd=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org&amp;rp=%2Fnews%2Fjournalist-gaza#%7B%22ci%22%3A0%2C%22os%22%3A18948.599999904633%7D<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I was told to take down every post and comment with #FreePalestine, #GazaGenocide, and #GazaUnderAttack, saying that my posts make me look unbalanced,&#8221; Al-Akhrass said in an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/Cy_YCzYLGpc\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Instagram video<\/a>&nbsp;explaining her termination. &#8220;I was told the problem is with me expressing my beliefs, my opposition, for Israel&#8217;s genocide of my people.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8221;&nbsp;<em>Global<\/em>&nbsp;was literally asking me to look at these horrific images\u2014this genocide\u2014and detach myself from my identity, my own people, and say nothing,&#8221; she continued. &#8220;Is this ethical or moral, humane or diverse or inclusive?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Al-Akhrass&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/americas\/canadian-journalist-fired-over-pro-palestine-posts-speaks-out\/3047212\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a><em>Andalou<\/em>&nbsp;that &#8220;if Western media claims to be impartial, it should allow us to raise our voice without silencing or threatening Palestinians and without demanding our silence in the face of the injustice our people are facing.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;My dismissal should be seen within the context of a comprehensive movement aimed at silencing those who support Palestine in Western media,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
