Organizers said the focus of Saturday\u2019s summit was those who are affected by policies discussed at APEC but aren\u2019t given a seat at the table to talk about their needs and solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>APEC in S.F.<\/strong>:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/bayarea\/article\/san-francisco-apec-traffic-commute-18488319.php\">How&nbsp;APEC is impacting San Francisco traffic this morning<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>More on APEC:<\/strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/sf\/article\/apec-summit-traffic-transit-need-to-know-map-18452566.php\">How to navigate street closures and transportation woes<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The topics addressed by the day\u2019s speakers and panels included workers\u2019 rights, climate policy, Palestinian freedom and the Israel-Hamas war. They criticized the actions and \u201cneoliberal policies\u201d of the U.S. and the rest of the 21 economies represented at APEC as prioritizing profits over human rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keynote speaker Brandon Lee, a San Francisco native and Indigenous rights and environmental activist, focused on the resistance to what he called repressive policies and the wealthy elite. Lee was the target of a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/bayarea\/article\/San-Francisco-activist-shot-in-Philippines-14291516.php\">suspected assassination attempt<\/a>&nbsp;in the Philippines in 2019 after he protested multinational companies that he says have profited from the destruction of the environment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI know firsthand that the backdoor trade deals peddled by APEC will not benefit the people,\u201d he said. \u201cThey only benefit the corporations and careless countries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lee called on attendees to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/sf\/article\/apec-asia-pacific-conference-18442936.php\">keep pushing back<\/a>&nbsp;throughout the week and after APEC is over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRage, rage!\u201d he continued. \u201cWe will fight for a better future for all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During a panel called \u201cThe People Fight Back,\u201d Raymond \u201cMong\u201d Palatino, an activist and former member of the Philippine House of Representatives, echoed Lee\u2019s statement that APEC benefits corporations and the wealthy at the expense of workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAPEC is \u2026 Asia-Pacific Economic Colonialism,\u201d he said. \u201cAPEC means support for governments, even if they are corrupt, repressive, not legitimately elected by the people, as long as these governments support APEC doctrines.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the event, the energetic crowd, which included people from around the country, chanted \u201cshut down APEC,\u201d \u201cno to APEC\u201d and \u201cpeople over profit,\u201d and frequently burst into applause to support speakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Donna Denina, a master of ceremonies for the event, said that&nbsp;APEC\u2019s theme for the year, \u201cCreating a Resilient and Sustainable Future for All,\u201d is disingenuous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis kind of profit-driven economy has no care about the environment,\u201d Denina said. \u201cThe only thing that is resilient in any of this is the resiliency of the people to fight for a better world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reach Danielle Echeverria:\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:danielle.echeverria@sfchronicle.com\">danielle.echeverria@sfchronicle.com<\/a>; Twitter: @DanielleEchev<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/author\/danielle-echeverria\/\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Written By <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/author\/danielle-echeverria\/\" target=\"_blank\">Danielle Echeverria<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SFChronicle\/\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DanielleEchev\"><\/a>Danielle Echeverria is a reporter for The Chronicle\u2019s Engagement and Breaking News team.
