I told them you were coming, and they might be interested in our meeting since the topic affects them, too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"866e\">\u201cGreat!\u201d I enthusiastically replied. I turned to the girls and blurted out, \u201cSo, what do you think of climate change?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"55a5\">They froze like deer in headlights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"d46c\">Their laughter abruptly stopped. An expression of unease washed over their faces as they shifted their gazes toward one another. After a moment of awkward silence, they drifted back to futzing with the desks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"33bb\">In a low voice, the teacher explained, \u201cIt\u2019s a scary subject for them. They don\u2019t feel like they can make a difference, so it\u2019s hard for them to talk about it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"182f\"><em>Crap<\/em>, I thought.&nbsp;<em>What have I done?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"8b84\">Young People are Terrified of the Future<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"3964\">A teenager\u2019s weightiest worries should be along the lines of \u201cHow am I going to pass math?\u201d or \u201cI wonder if Tommy likes me?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"0eaf\">They shouldn\u2019t be asking themselves \u201cHow am I going to survive global warming?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"f8cf\">And yet, they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/miro.medium.com\/v2\/resize:fit:533\/1*Pq2PnxeSMaT2HmHlGpgmyA.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/miro.medium.com\/v2\/resize:fit:610\/1*KghQGKJpih2c3yEF-lZlFQ.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo credit:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/thehutch\/47389363861\/in\/photostream\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&nbsp;Roy<\/a>, Flickr<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"128a\">A study published in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanplh\/article\/PIIS2542-5196(21)00278-3\/fulltext\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lancet Planet Health in 2021<\/a>&nbsp;gathered responses from 10,000 children and young people (16\u201325 years old) in ten different countries. Findings indicated 59% of respondents were \u201cvery or extremely worried\u201d about climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"7fe6\">More than 50% of those surveyed said they felt \u201csad, anxious, angry, powerless, helpless and guilty.\u201d And, more than 75% saw the future as \u201cfrightening.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"88c1\"><strong>There\u2019s Been A Mindshift Among Students<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"7d99\">In May 2022, Julia Steinberger, an ecological economist at the University of Lausanne, wrote about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@jksteinberger\/the-kids-are-not-ok-c518fffb475\">her experience giving a climate presentation at her old high school in Geneva<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"e2e4\">In 2019, she noted how students showed unbridled enthusiasm and optimism. They were \u201cexcited\u201d and \u201cengaged.\u201d The students had agency over their destinies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"2f39\">Three years later, at a similar high school presentation, the students appeared bored and distracted. During the Q&amp;A session, Steinberger learned why the assembly was so aloof.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"535c\">A young girl took the mic and began her rapid-fire questioning. \u201cWhy are you here talking to us? We can\u2019t do anything\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"6401\">Backed by the thunderous applause of her classmates, the student let it rip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"3dff\">\u201cOnly politicians, only business leaders, can make the big changes you are talking about. Why aren\u2019t you talking to them? \u2026 we have to act within just a few years \u2014 and nothing happens, nothing changes \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"31e8\">The students\u2019 indignation and sense of hopelessness shook Steinberger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/miro.medium.com\/v2\/resize:fit:700\/1*GIEskrqk47Y3CeL5eTcOzA.png\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo Credit:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/thehutch\/33513200028\/in\/photostream\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Roy<\/a>, Flickr<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"5d4d\">It\u2019s An Uphill Fight Against Global Warming<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"734c\">In June 2023, Montana District Court Judge Seely ruled that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/climatecasechart.com\/case\/11091\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201ca provision of the Montana Environmental Policy Act (MEPA)&nbsp;<em>prohibiting<\/em>&nbsp;consideration of greenhouse gas emissions&nbsp;<\/a>and corresponding climate change impacts in environmental reviews<a href=\"https:\/\/climatecasechart.com\/case\/11091\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&nbsp;\u2026 violated the plaintiffs\u2019 right to a clean and healthful environment under the Montana Constitution.<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"43e9\">The lawsuit, brought on behalf of 16 plaintiffs ranging in age from 5 to 22 years old, represents hope in the fight against climate change. That\u2019s the good news \u2014 the glass half-full view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"79bf\">Unfortunately, on the flip side \u2014 this unprecedented victory for environmental protections against climate change only applies in Montana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"49a1\">Another issue \u2014 it appears Judge Seely\u2019s ruling will be appealed to the Montana Supreme Court where it could possibly be overturned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"a837\">The fight is not over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Our Children\u2019s Trust: Breaking News from Montana to Juliana\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NpdtFH0_wBg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"f161\">It makes perfect sense that an environmental policy that does not take greenhouse gases into consideration is not worth the paper it\u2019s written on. So, why would there be any pushback on such a logical conclusion to this lawsuit?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"4ece\">Greed. Status Quo. Greed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"63be\">No wonder young people are frustrated and angry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"3108\">Following the landmark decision in Montana,<em>&nbsp;The New York Times<\/em>&nbsp;engaged with high schoolers across the country asking them&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/10\/12\/learning\/what-teenagers-are-saying-about-their-role-in-fighting-climate-change.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">what they believed their role should be in the battle against climate change<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"53cd\">A student from Philadephia stated, \u201cClimate change shouldn\u2019t be our problem, but that doesn\u2019t mean we shouldn\u2019t be the solution.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"d21d\">Another from Colorado admitted to being scared, saying, \u201cI don\u2019t know what to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"3fb1\">Today\u2019s youth face a dilemma not of their doing, and they are not shy about putting the blame on the generations before them \u2014 where it belongs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"4108\"><strong>The Effort to Change the Narrative<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"76b7\">You can\u2019t discuss kids and climate change without bringing up Greta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"6904\">In September 2018, then 15-year-old, Greta Thunberg bravely put a stake in the ground and began her protest against climate change in front of the Swedish parliament. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fridaysforfuture.org\/#:~:text=%23FridaysForFuture%20is%20a%20youth%2Dled,action%20on%20the%20climate%20crisis\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cFridays For Future\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;strike continues today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"b585\">It\u2019s difficult to see any direct impact on how businesses and governments operate, but her efforts have not stopped. And, while Greta can be a controversial figure, her motivation is deeply rooted and her intent earnest. She continues to throw a spotlight on the dangers of climate change with every protest, every speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/miro.medium.com\/v2\/resize:fit:700\/1*G4lrnfzpAeAyeN0v0M6XIw.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Greta at 2019 Climate Change protest. Photo credit:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/User:GPSLeo\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Leonhard Lenz<\/a>, Creative Commons<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"c4df\">Not every young person possesses the wherewithal of Greta, but that doesn\u2019t mean they cannot contribute to the solution, and that\u2019s the message young people need to hear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p id=\"a8f8\">Regardless of age, everyone can make a difference. Every step taken against climate change contributes to a bigger movement.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"e2dd\"><strong>What Do The Youth Need? Hope! When Do They Need It? Now!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"20aa\">At her next climate presentation, the ecology economist Steinberger took a different tactic. She realized the students \u201cdidn\u2019t need to hear about emission trajectories: they needed to hear about trajectories of popular struggle, when and how people without power changed the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"34da\">She put away her powerpoint and listened. She then went on to review the slides focused on solutions from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/ar6\/syr\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)&nbsp;<\/a>annual Synthesis Report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"c011\">She gave the students something positive to focus on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"c84f\">We can\u2019t just hand our youth a flyer saying \u201cWelcome to the Apocalypse and, BTW, sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/miro.medium.com\/v2\/resize:fit:700\/1*VC67sMZBmsHlh1-TrP-75A.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo Credit:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/thehutch\/46474365195\/in\/photostream\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Roy<\/a>, Flickr<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"1be3\">Hollow promises by government and business leaders cannot be the only messages reaching our young. Children need to believe they can still salvage a future on this planet. They need to see a path forward \u2014 one that\u2019s paved, not with false hope and lies, but attainable goals and ways to ensure the earth is inhabitable for them and generations to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"2b04\"><strong>We Don\u2019t Know What We Don\u2019t Know<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"0de6\">Optimism for the future has it\u2019s critics. I\u2019ve read many articles and reports lamenting we are doomed. I strongly believe this perspective is short-sighted and injurious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"6831\">A recent Medium piece by George Dillard adeptly summarized what I keep thinking. We don\u2019t know what we don\u2019t know.<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-new-climate\/whatever-you-think-climate-change-will-be-like-youre-wrong-b852d3fe7e3d?source=post_page-----2849fa1e497b--------------------------------\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-new-climate\/whatever-you-think-climate-change-will-be-like-youre-wrong-b852d3fe7e3d?source=post_page-----2849fa1e497b--------------------------------\">Whatever You Think Climate Change Will Be Like, You\u2019re Wrong<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-new-climate\/whatever-you-think-climate-change-will-be-like-youre-wrong-b852d3fe7e3d?source=post_page-----2849fa1e497b--------------------------------\">Predicting disaster is impossible but important<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-new-climate\/whatever-you-think-climate-change-will-be-like-youre-wrong-b852d3fe7e3d?source=post_page-----2849fa1e497b--------------------------------\">medium.com<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"3c4e\">Dillard recaps the speculation swirling around the pandemic that swept the planet in 2020. He points out all the things we imagined, as well as the things we could never have imagined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"35fa\">He goes on to say, \u201cLife in the age of climate change will likely be weirder in some ways than we anticipated, and more mundane in others.\u201d In other words, we can only speculate (again) on what the future holds \u2014 as we try to bolster our minds and efforts against the impacts of climate change, let\u2019s be open to all possibilities and not just catastrophize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"a90b\">What Are You Prepared to Do?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/miro.medium.com\/v2\/resize:fit:700\/1*s_4vi9NIQCnvVtIJgFtAlg.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo credit:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/takver\/49569010242\/in\/photostream\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">John Englar<\/a>, Creative Commons<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"8da1\">While there are young people willing and able to take up the mantle against climate change, there\u2019s a whole slew who suffer in silence. In either case, our kids need to know adults&nbsp;<em>do care<\/em>. They need to know adults are also trying to change the trajectory of this planet\u2019s health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"5b8b\">Whether an educator, a parent, or just concerned adult, any grown-up can find some way to help reassure young people there is hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/parenting\/talking-your-child-about-climate-change#:~:text=Knowing%20about%20and%20hearing%20from,want%20to%20play%20in%20it.\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Listen<\/strong><\/a><strong><br><\/strong>If a child seems distressed, but unable to express his\/her concern, offer to listen. Sometimes being heard can make a difference.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Remind Kids of Social and Environmental&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/9-powerful-social-change-movements-you-need-to-know-about\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Successes<\/strong><\/a><strong><br><\/strong>\u2013 How&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wabe.org\/environmental-experts-celebrate-success-stories-for-earth-day-2022\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">species like Humpback Whales were saved from extinction<\/a><br>\u2013 How we&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/worksinprogress.co\/issue\/how-we-fixed-the-ozone-layer\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">repaired the hole in the Ozone Layer<\/a><br>\u2013 How we&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Negotiations_to_end_apartheid_in_South_Africa\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ended Apartheid<\/a>&nbsp;in South Africa<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Help youth to&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6304708\/heros-journey-psychology\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>reframe their narrative into a Hero\u2019s Journey<\/strong><\/a><strong><br><\/strong>A recent study found perceiving one\u2019s life as a Hero\u2019s Journey is associated with enhanced well-being, greater life satisfaction and reduced depression<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/parenting\/talking-your-child-about-climate-change#:~:text=Knowing%20about%20and%20hearing%20from,want%20to%20play%20in%20it.\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Focus on Solutions<\/strong><\/a><br>\u2013 Help kids learn the proper way to recycle<br>\u2013 Take kids on a tour of the local Materials Recovery Facility (MRF)<br>\u2013 Set up composting at a school<br>\u2013 Advice students on how to contact govenment representatives<br>\u2013 Assist children explore careers that help fight climate change<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"1d46\">The Bottom Line<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p id=\"a70a\"><strong>\u201cIt always seems impossible until it\u2019s done.\u201d \u2014 Nelson Mandela<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"8c21\">Our kids don\u2019t want to hear any more statistics. They know things are bad. They need to know all is not lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"5e1c\">Children want to hear about successes and solutions, so let\u2019s teach them about the wins and help them find answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ce09\">And, everyone must understand \u2014 including our world\u2019s youth \u2014 it is the greatest of mistakes to do nothing because you can only do a little.
