(AP Photo\/Jeff Gentner)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.levernews.com\/r\/821b6dc2?m=a711267c-71df-4bae-b107-734ff6081b99\">Mining Towns Get Clean Energy Boost<\/a><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>By Katya Schwenk \u2022\u00a02 Dec 2023 (editor@levernews.com)<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"yiv7552969498from-coal-to-wind-turbines\">From Coal To Wind Turbines<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Millions in federal funding&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.levernews.com\/r\/6ed58186?m=a711267c-71df-4bae-b107-734ff6081b99\"><u>are going to former mining towns<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;and other communities once reliant on manufacturing and fossil fuels to pay for new clean-energy manufacturing projects, in an effort to bring new renewable jobs to the United States\u2019 industrial heartland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.S. Department of Energy&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.levernews.com\/r\/27e35a5c?m=a711267c-71df-4bae-b107-734ff6081b99\"><u>announced this week<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;that it was awarding $275 million to seven different manufacturing projects, funding that comes from President Joe Biden\u2019s&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.levernews.com\/r\/30602e2c?m=a711267c-71df-4bae-b107-734ff6081b99\"><u>2021 trillion-dollar infrastructure deal<\/u><\/a>. In Louisville, Colorado, and Vandergrift, Pennsylvania, two former coal towns, old factories will be used by a window supplier to manufacture insulated glass that helps make buildings energy efficient. In Pittsburgh, a magnetics company&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.levernews.com\/r\/e49d6546?m=a711267c-71df-4bae-b107-734ff6081b99\"><u>will build a new factory<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;to produce components for electric vehicles and other electric infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The funding will also bring a wind turbine producer to Vernon, Texas, a former mining town; a metal manufacturer to Weirton, West Virginia; a battery electrode manufacturer to Bridgeport, Connecticut; and a glass manufacturer to Detroit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Such projects are expected to bring new jobs to their chosen communities, some of which&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.levernews.com\/r\/4c129969?m=a711267c-71df-4bae-b107-734ff6081b99\"><u>have been hollowed out by the nationwide decline in mining jobs<\/u><\/a>. In West Virginia, for instance, manufacturing company Boston Metal expects that the project will create more than 200 jobs, its CEO&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.levernews.com\/r\/9d5a8a36?m=a711267c-71df-4bae-b107-734ff6081b99\"><u>told the<em>&nbsp;New York Times<\/em><\/u><\/a>. In Pittsburgh, magnetics company CorePower will employ&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.levernews.com\/r\/5652a1e2?m=a711267c-71df-4bae-b107-734ff6081b99\"><u>between 25 and 50 workers<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative, proponents hope, will prioritize workers at risk of being left behind by the transition away from coal and other fossil fuels \u2014 giving them jobs while also supporting clean-energy manufacturing in the U.S. While the U.S.&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.levernews.com\/r\/ddc94af1?m=a711267c-71df-4bae-b107-734ff6081b99\"><u>has lagged behind globally<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in this industry, investments by the Biden administration, in particular courtesy of the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, have&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.levernews.com\/r\/152c1092?m=a711267c-71df-4bae-b107-734ff6081b99\"><u>spurred new clean-energy production across the country<\/u><\/a>.
