{"id":30364,"date":"2023-12-05T12:15:19","date_gmt":"2023-12-05T20:15:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/occupysf.net\/?p=30364"},"modified":"2023-12-05T12:15:20","modified_gmt":"2023-12-05T20:15:20","slug":"cop28-head-claims-theres-no-science-behind-fossil-fuel-phaseout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/occupysf.net\/index.php\/2023\/12\/05\/cop28-head-claims-theres-no-science-behind-fossil-fuel-phaseout\/","title":{"rendered":"COP28 Head Claims There&#8217;s &#8216;No Science&#8217; Behind Fossil Fuel Phaseout"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/media-library\/sultan-ahmed-al-jaber.jpg?id=50630779&amp;width=1200&amp;height=400&amp;quality=90&amp;coordinates=0%2C60%2C0%2C1431\" alt=\"Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>COP28 president Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber speaks during a press conference at the United Nations climate summit in Dubai on December 4, 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0(Photo: Karim Sahib\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;This dismisses decades of work by IPCC scientists,&#8221; said one expert. &#8220;Disgraceful.&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/author\/jake-johnson\">JAKE JOHNSON<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dec 04, 2023 (CommonDreams.org)<a href=\"https:\/\/giving.commondreams.org\/-\/XKQWGZVR\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scientists and climate advocates responded with outrage Sunday to COP28 president Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber&#8217;s claim that there is &#8220;no science&#8221; behind the push to rapidly phase out planet-warming fossil fuels, which Al Jaber&#8217;s company is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalwitness.org\/en\/press-releases\/cop28-president-sultan-al-jabers-company-will-become-the-second-largest-oil-producer-on-earth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">extracting on a large scale<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Al Jaber&#8217;s comments, first&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/dec\/03\/back-into-caves-cop28-president-dismisses-phase-out-of-fossil-fuels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;by&nbsp;<em>The Guardian<\/em>&nbsp;on Sunday, came in response to questioning from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/theelders.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Elders<\/a>&nbsp;chair Mary Robinson during a virtual&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shechangesclimate.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">She Changes Climate<\/a>&nbsp;discussion. Robinson told Al Jaber that &#8220;we&#8217;re in an absolute crisis that is hurting women and children more than anyone&#8230; and it&#8217;s because we have not yet committed to phasing out fossil fuel.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The COP28 chief and Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) CEO responded dismissively, saying he &#8220;accepted to come to this meeting to have a sober and mature conversation&#8221; and not to take part in &#8220;any discussion that is alarmist,&#8221; according to audio published by&nbsp;<em>The Guardian<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There is no science out there, or no scenario out there, that says that the phaseout of fossil fuel is what&#8217;s going to achieve 1.5\u00b0C,&#8221; Al Jaber added. &#8220;Please help me, show me the roadmap for a phaseout of fossil fuel that will allow for sustainable socioeconomic development, unless you want to take the world back into caves.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That position runs directly counter to the outspoken stance of United Nations Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres, who&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/antonio-guterres-cop28\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;Friday that &#8220;the 1.5\u00b0C limit is only possible if we ultimately stop burning all fossil fuels,&#8221; arguing that &#8220;the science is clear.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joelle Gergis, a climate scientist and lead author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change&#8217;s (IPCC)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/ar6\/wg1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Working Group I contribution to the Sixth Assessment Report<\/a>, called Al Jaber&#8217;s remarks &#8220;disgraceful.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This dismisses decades of work by IPCC scientists,&#8221; Gergis&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/joellegergis\/status\/1731404762468458805\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>&nbsp;on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;&#8216;Sending us back to caves&#8217; is the oldest of fossil fuel industry tropes: it&#8217;s verging on climate denial.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The IPCC, which has synthesized the research of hundreds of climate scientists from around the world, has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/2022\/04\/04\/ipcc-ar6-wgiii-pressrelease\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">argued<\/a>&nbsp;that any successful effort to prevent catastrophic planetary warming &#8220;will involve a substantial reduction in fossil fuel use.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;More than a century of burning fossil fuels as well as unequal and unsustainable energy and land use has led to global warming of 1.1\u00b0C above pre-industrial levels,&#8221; the IPCC said&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/ar6\/syr\/downloads\/press\/IPCC_AR6_SYR_PressRelease_en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">following the release<\/a>&nbsp;of its latest report earlier this year. &#8220;This has resulted in more frequent and more intense extreme weather events that have caused increasingly dangerous impacts on nature and people in every region of the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other recent research has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/03\/22\/rich-nations-must-cut-oil-and-gas-2034-keep-climate-hopes-alive-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">warned<\/a>&nbsp;that rich nations must completely halt oil and gas production by 2034 to give the world a 50% chance of limiting warming to the 1.5\u00b0C target set by the Paris Agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bill Hare, chief executive of Climate Analytics,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/dec\/03\/back-into-caves-cop28-president-dismisses-phase-out-of-fossil-fuels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a><em>The Guardian<\/em>&nbsp;that Al Jaber&#8217;s response to Robinson was &#8220;extraordinary, revealing, worrying, and belligerent.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;&#8216;Sending us back to caves&#8217; is the oldest of fossil fuel industry tropes: it&#8217;s verging on climate denial,&#8221; said Hare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Al Jaber&#8217;s comments, which he&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/live\/2023\/dec\/04\/cop28-backlash-after-president-claims-no-science-behind-fossil-fuel-phase-out?page=with:block-656daa9d8f0856ef8db70b1f#block-656daa9d8f0856ef8db70b1f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">says have been misrepresented<\/a>, were seen as further confirmation that he is ill-suited to lead a climate summit given his simultaneous role as the top executive at one of the world&#8217;s largest fossil fuel firms. A Global Witness&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalwitness.org\/en\/press-releases\/cop28-president-sultan-al-jabers-company-will-become-the-second-largest-oil-producer-on-earth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">analysis<\/a>&nbsp;released over the weekend found that ADNOC is on track to become the second-largest oil producer in the world by 2050, and Al Jaber has been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/uae-cop28-deals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">accused<\/a>&nbsp;of using his position as COP28 president to pursue oil and gas deals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;ADNOC plans to produce more oil than any of the &#8216;Big 5&#8217; supermajors\u2014ExxonMobil, Chevron, Shell, BP, TotalEnergies,&#8221; Global Witness found. &#8220;In fact, its projected output will positively dwarf that of the European majors; ADNOC&#8217;s 35.9 billion barrels is 49% higher alone than the projected 24.1 billion barrels production of Shell, BP, and Total combined.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Monday, the COP28 presidency&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cop28.com\/en\/wcas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">published a summary<\/a>&nbsp;of the World Climate Action Summit, a gathering of more than 150 heads of state aimed at facilitating coordinated climate action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The document states that world leaders &#8220;highlighted the opportunities to cut emissions in every sector and to accelerate the technology innovation to address scope 3 emissions, as well as the phase-down of fossil fuels in support of a transition consistent with limiting warming to 1.5\u00b0C.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Romain Ioualalen, global policy lead at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/oil-change-international\">Oil Change International<\/a>, said in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/priceofoil.org\/2023\/12\/04\/oil-change-international-response-to-cop28-leaders-summit-summary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement<\/a>&nbsp;that &#8220;strong support from the leaders&#8217; summit to address fossil fuels in the final COP28 agreement is a promising sign, but it is just good enough.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Leaders must raise their ambition above a phase-down, and agree to immediately stop new fossil fuel expansion, and build a fast, full, fair, and funded phaseout of all fossil fuels while rapidly phasing in renewables,&#8221; said Ioualalen. &#8220;Contrary to the COP28 president&#8217;s assertions, the science is abundantly clear that warming will continue as long as we keep producing and burning fossil fuels.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
