{"id":30736,"date":"2023-12-22T11:58:31","date_gmt":"2023-12-22T19:58:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/occupysf.net\/?p=30736"},"modified":"2023-12-22T11:58:31","modified_gmt":"2023-12-22T19:58:31","slug":"now-californias-lieutenant-guv-wants-trump-forced-off-the-california-ballot-too","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/occupysf.net\/index.php\/2023\/12\/22\/now-californias-lieutenant-guv-wants-trump-forced-off-the-california-ballot-too\/","title":{"rendered":"Now California\u2019s Lieutenant Guv Wants Trump Forced Off the California Ballot, Too"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"719\" src=\"https:\/\/occupysf.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-68-1024x719.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30737\" srcset=\"https:\/\/occupysf.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-68-1024x719.png 1024w, https:\/\/occupysf.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-68-300x211.png 300w, https:\/\/occupysf.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-68-150x105.png 150w, https:\/\/occupysf.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-68-768x539.png 768w, https:\/\/occupysf.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-68-1536x1078.png 1536w, https:\/\/occupysf.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-68-214x150.png 214w, https:\/\/occupysf.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-68.png 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>20 DECEMBER 2023\/<a href=\"https:\/\/sfist.com\/politics\/\">SF POLITICS<\/a>\/<a href=\"https:\/\/sfist.com\/author\/joe-kukura\/\">JOE KUKURA<\/a> (SFist.com)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>California\u2019s Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis is calling for California to follow the lead of Colorado, and kick Donald Trump off the Republican ballot for the state\u2019s coming March 5 state primary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>California Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis is not exactly a household name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, she\u2019s the first woman lieutenant governor in California history, she&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2023\/11\/23\/acting-governor-eleni-kounalakis-proclaims-thanksgiving-day-2\/\">takes over Gavin Newsom\u2019s duties<\/a>&nbsp;when he\u2019s out of the state, and she was the first to declare that she\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2023\/04\/24\/eleni-kounalakis-campaign-california-governor-2026-00093381\">running for Newsom\u2019s job<\/a>&nbsp;in 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And she may be looking to boost her name recognition a bit, with a new gambit where she\u2019s calling for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/state-watch\/4370131-could-california-drop-trump-from-ballot-lieutenant-gov-wants-to-find-out\/\">Donald Trump to be disqualified from the 2024 California ballot<\/a>, according to The Hill, just one day after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/regulation\/court-battles\/4368569-trump-kicked-off-colorado-ballot-in-14th-amendment-case\/\">Colorado disqualified Trump<\/a>&nbsp;from their own state\u2019s ballot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">NEW: California\u2019s Lieutenant Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EleniForCA?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@EleniForCA<\/a> urges Secretary of State to explore legal options to remove former President Trump from California\u2019s primary election ballot. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/KUEYqtdH8x\">pic.twitter.com\/KUEYqtdH8x<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Ashley Zavala (@ZavalaA) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ZavalaA\/status\/1737553652372709567?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 20, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not Kounalakis\u2019s decision, but she asked California Secretary of State Shirley Weber to remove Trump&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ltg.ca.gov\/2023\/12\/20\/lt-governor-kounalakis-calls-for-secretary-of-state-weber-to-explore-legal-options-to-remove-former-president-donald-trump-from-californias-2024-presidential-primary-ballot\/\">in a Wednesday letter<\/a>. \u201cI am prompted by the Colorado Supreme Court&#8217;s recent ruling that former President Donald Trump is ineligible to appear on the state&#8217;s ballot as a Presidential Candidate due to his role in inciting an insurrection in the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021,&#8221; Kounalakis wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This decision is about honoring the rule of law in our country and protecting the fundamental pillars of our democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This comes a day after the Colorado Supreme Court voted to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ltg.ca.gov\/2023\/12\/20\/lt-governor-kounalakis-calls-for-secretary-of-state-weber-to-explore-legal-options-to-remove-former-president-donald-trump-from-californias-2024-presidential-primary-ballot\/\">ban Trump from that state\u2019s primary ballot<\/a>. As the New York Times explains, that ruling cites the Civil War-era 14th amendment to the U.S. Constitution which \u201cdisqualifies people who engage in insurrection against the Constitution after taking an oath to support it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The timing puts Secretary of State Weber in an awkward spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kounalakis\u2019s letter is dated December 20, the state is scheduled to finalize its Republican primary ballot on December 28.
