Yes, the city has its struggles, from inequality and the ongoing drug crisis to government bureaucracy that can be almost comically inefficient. But there are also so many reasons to be hopeful about SF\u2019s future and to celebrate what\u2019s ahead in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only are we&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/local\/article\/reasons-to-stay-san-francisco-17723595.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"\">not leaving San Francisco,<\/a>&nbsp;but there has been a swell of developments either recently or on the horizon that makes us energized about living here right now. Our entire staff nominated reasons why we\u2019re especially optimistic about the city this year. From exciting restaurant openings to a surge in live music, here\u2019s why we think it\u2019s a great time to live in San Francisco:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chinatown\u2019s newest festival will be even bigger and better this year<\/strong><br><br>The Chinese Cultural Center threw its inaugural&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ghost-festival.org\/\" class=\"\">Hungry Ghost Festival<\/a>&nbsp;in the fall, with dance performances, interactive art and a parade, and it\u2019s coming back in 2024. Until then, we\u2019ll see you at a&nbsp;<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/food\/article\/ccsf-educated-palate-bakeshop-sf-18429581.php\">hidden downtown bakeshop<\/a>&nbsp;for the city\u2019s most perfect golden baguette \u2014 for $1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You can play the world\u2019s fastest growing sport with some excellent views<br><\/strong><br>Move over, pickleball: Padel is the hottest new racket sport, and SF is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sfrecpark.org\/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=1601\" class=\"\">the first city in Northern California<\/a>&nbsp;to open designated courts. From&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/sf-culture\/article\/summer-of-music-free-concerts-18179759.php\" class=\"\">paying musicians to play on street corners<\/a>&nbsp;every Saturday of the summer to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/sf-culture\/article\/sf-is-a-drag-event-18525082.php\" class=\"\">mobilizing 100 sidewalk drag performers<\/a>, to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/sf-culture\/article\/castro-halloween-return-family-friendly-18447762.php\" class=\"\">bringing Halloween festivities back to the Castro<\/a>, the Civic Joy Fund was the boost that the SF arts scene needed in 2023, and we can\u2019t wait to see what\u2019s coming for 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SF\u2019s&nbsp;Yerba Buena Island is&nbsp;more accessible than ever<br><\/strong><br><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/local\/article\/yerba-buena-island-residents-evicted-17355407.php\">Yerba Buena Island<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 the island in the middle of the bay that, until now, has been largely inaccessible to the public \u2014 is now flush with new parks and public spaces. New additions to the island include a dog park, hiking trails, picnic areas and a 69-foot stainless steel sculpture by Japanese artist Hiroshi Sugimoto named \u201cPoint of Infinity.\u201d These new attractions \u2014 along with the island\u2019s criminally underrated beach, Clipper Cove \u2014 give San Franciscans a new place to explore, despite a large swath of Yerba Buena still being under construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>North Beach is having a moment<br><\/strong><br>Walking around North Beach these days, you can feel the energy in the air. Tony Gemignani\u2019s new&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/food\/article\/sf-pizza-bagel-beer-festival-18144594.php\" class=\"\">Pizza, Bagel &amp; Beer Festival<\/a>&nbsp;debuted last summer, and the neighborhood also welcomed a number of trendy new spots, from specialty grocery&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/food\/article\/lukes-local-north-beach-17845959.php\" class=\"\">Luke\u2019s Local<\/a>&nbsp;to cocktail bar&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/food\/article\/sf-restaurants-late-night-dining-18154596.php\" class=\"\">Petite Lil\u2019s<\/a>. There are more exciting openings slated for 2024, and if that\u2019s not enough evidence for you that North Beach is thriving, the data also supports it:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/sf\/article\/north-beach-neighborhood-18447316.php\" class=\"\">Sales tax revenue is up<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"8\" height=\"5\" src=\"https:\/\/occupysf.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image-10.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30984\" title=\"Image 1 of 4\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Scenes from the San Francisco Lowrider Council 6th annual cruise.Blair Heagerty\/SFGATE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The lowrider ban has been lifted<br><\/strong><br>After the passage of Assembly Bill 436 last year, San Francisco\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/characters\/article\/Lowriding-through-the-pandemic-how-SF-car-15662566.php\" class=\"\">iconic lowriders<\/a>&nbsp;could make the streets of the city bump in ways they haven\u2019t for decades. The bill lifted restrictions on vital parts of lowrider culture, like cruising and modifying cars to sit at lower heights \u2014 bans that lowrider enthusiasts say had resulted in overpolicing and racial discrimination. While lowriders have remained a part of the city\u2019s events and celebrations throughout the years \u2014 the art was born from California\u2019s rich Chicano and Chicana culture \u2014 the new law could mean that cruising will once again be a regular sight on the streets of the Mission and elsewhere throughout SF.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>There are corner store pets all over the city \u2014 and one incredibly old fish<br><\/strong><br>The&nbsp;<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/local\/article\/world-oldest-fish-methuselah-california-academy-18376316.php\">oldest fish in any aquarium in the world&nbsp;<\/a>is enjoying belly rubs in the middle of Golden Gate Park, and nearly every street is replete with&nbsp;<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/local\/article\/beloved-corner-store-cats-of-san-francisco-15789259.php\">corner store cats<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/food\/article\/key-food-market-sf-corner-store-18327512.php\">friendly shop dogs<\/a>&nbsp;that are waiting to be discovered. Just be sure to ask politely before giving them a pet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>We\u2019ll host WNBA basketball, finally<br><\/strong><br>The new team isn\u2019t coming until 2025, but the excitement for WNBA basketball in the Bay Area is already building. We\u2019ll likely find out the general manager and coach of the team in 2024. Could we see stars with Bay Area ties like&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/sports\/article\/year-snub-vegas-aces-chelsea-gray-one-18186606.php?cmpid=gsa-sfgate-result\" class=\"\">Chelsea Gray<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/warriors\/article\/Sabrina-Ionescu-breaks-out-Steph-Curry-celebration-17265493.php\" class=\"\">Sabrina Ionescu<\/a>&nbsp;be the initial face of the franchise? Could Cameron Brink, the Stanford star who could be&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/sports\/uconn-womens-basketball\/article\/paige-bueckers-caitlin-clarke-wnba-mock-draft-18546570.php\" class=\"\">a top draft pick this year<\/a>&nbsp;if she turns pro, decide to play one more college season because, as she said before this season, it \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/sports\/college\/article\/cameron-brink-lead-stanford-back-top-making-wnba-18420100.php\" class=\"\">would be a dream<\/a>\u201d to play for the Bay Area\u2019s team \u2014 and in the same building as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/warriors\/article\/Warriors-Steph-Curry-shouts-out-godsister-16077484.php\" class=\"\">her godbrother<\/a>&nbsp;Steph Curry? Notably,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/san-francisco\/2023\/11\/17\/sf-tenderloin-golden-gate-greenway-pedestrians\" target=\"_blank\">progress is also slated to continue<\/a>&nbsp;on the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goldengategreenway.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cGolden Gate Greenway,\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;a planned pedestrian oasis in Tenderloin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>We\u2019ve laid our claim to the hottest new technology<br><br><\/strong>For tech workers and companies, artificial intelligence was a bright spot in 2023 \u2014 and San Francisco has secured a front-row seat to its progress, as well as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/tech\/article\/openai-workers-sam-altman-board-18504061.php\" class=\"\">its accompanying drama<\/a>. Key startups like Anthropic and ChatGPT-maker OpenAI have gobbled up&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/tech\/article\/two-offices-sf-going-one-tech-firm-another-18453340.php\" class=\"\">office space<\/a>&nbsp;in the city, and local&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/tech\/article\/openai-google-pay-salaries-poach-18489070.php\" class=\"\">AI researchers<\/a>&nbsp;looking for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/lu.ma\/sf\" class=\"\">in-person events<\/a>&nbsp;will find everything from small&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/abc7news.com\/san-francisco-ai-hackathon-accelerate-sf-artificial-intelligence\/14019456\/\" class=\"\">hackathons<\/a>&nbsp;to major&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2023\/11\/06\/openai-devday-san-francisco-microsoft-chatbot\/\" class=\"\">conventions<\/a>. With AI, there\u2019s some&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/2017\/12\/04\/147305\/google-has-released-an-ai-tool-that-makes-sense-of-your-genome\/\" class=\"\">good<\/a>, some&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/12\/27\/business\/media\/new-york-times-open-ai-microsoft-lawsuit.html\" class=\"\">bad<\/a>&nbsp;and some ridiculous (see: the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/food\/restaurants\/article\/ai-smoothie-sf-closed-18459671.php\" class=\"\">shuttering<\/a>&nbsp;of a so-called \u201cAI-powered smoothie bar\u201d), but San Francisco has clearly reaffirmed its status as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/local\/article\/tech-ai-san-francisco-mission-district-18409305.php\" class=\"\">the go-to place<\/a>&nbsp;for what\u2019s next in tech.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"8\" height=\"5\" src=\"https:\/\/occupysf.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image-14.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30988\" title=\"Article Image\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Festivalgoers and big fans of the Flaming Lips show up big for the band\u2019s closing show of the 86th annual Stern Grove Festival in San Francisco\u2019s Parkside District on Sunday, Aug. 20, 2023.Kevin Kelleher &amp; Emily Trinh\/Special to SFGATE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>We have officially become a Festival Town<br><br><\/strong>From Hardly Strictly Bluegrass to Outside Lands, San Francisco has a vibrant range of outdoor music festivals \u2014 probably a better selection than anywhere in the country. Not only have we shown we can support yet another 30,000-person-per-day festival (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/sf-culture\/article\/portola-music-festival-2023-photos-18400099.php\" class=\"\">Portola<\/a>) and that we can sustain one of the longest-running free music series in the country (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/things-to-do\/article\/Squatters-shootouts-and-music-The-wild-history-15761927.php\" class=\"\">Stern Grove<\/a>), but the appetite for festin\u2019 is so strong that in 2024 Golden Gate Park is slated to open its grounds for what will essentially be a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/sf-culture\/article\/sf-golden-gate-park-concerts-outside-lands-18364262.php\" class=\"\">second weekend of Outside Lands<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You might actually be able to afford to live here<br><\/strong><br>Rent prices in SF are&nbsp;<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/realestate\/article\/sf-rental-prices-fall-2023-18525210.php\">no longer the most expensive in the country<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/realestate\/article\/bay-area-housing-market-2024-predictions-18523070.php\">experts predict they won\u2019t shoot up substantially anytime soon<\/a>. Plus, your landlord officially can\u2019t ask you for more than one month\u2019s security deposit&nbsp;<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/bayarea\/article\/new-california-laws-2024-18552414.php\">thanks to a new law<\/a>. Multi-block stretches of Golden Gate Avenue in NoPa, Lake Street in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/local\/article\/sf-richmond-district-world-s-coolest-18436043.php\" class=\"\">the Richmond<\/a>, Sanchez Street in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/local\/article\/San-Francisco-neighborhood-has-town-square-16984327.php\" class=\"\">Noe Valley<\/a>&nbsp;and Shotwell Street in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/local\/article\/tech-ai-san-francisco-mission-district-18409305.php\" class=\"\">Mission District<\/a>&nbsp;have also been given the green light to remain Slow Streets, or roadways that are limited to outside vehicle traffic, adding more public spaces for pedestrians and cyclists alike to enjoy the city.&nbsp;<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Downtown is shifting from \u2018vacant to vibrant\u2019<br><\/strong><br>The city\u2019s&nbsp;<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/local\/article\/downtown-sf-vacant-to-vibrant-popups-open-18415428.php\">initiative to transform empty storefronts<\/a>&nbsp;downtown into diverse pop-up shops continues, with plans to announce a second cohort in the spring. Meanwhile, Mayor London Breed announced dozens of&nbsp;<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/food\/article\/bay-area-business-closures-2023-18576666.php\">much-needed<\/a>&nbsp;<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/abc7news.com\/san-francisco-planning-code-small-businesses-business-permit-new\/14185732\/\">changes to the planning code<\/a>&nbsp;aimed at making it easier for small businesses to open, survive and thrive.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Our local news coverage is extensive (and multilingual)<br><\/strong><br>Call us biased, but we think the media coverage in San Francisco is top notch. The city has nearly 100 local media outlets focused on all aspects of city life, including new upstarts that have joined the ranks in recent years and several that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/espanol\/\" class=\"\">are published<\/a>&nbsp;in multiple languages. The first of its kind since 1991\u2019s AIDS Memorial Grove, the enclave honors locals who have died from breast cancer and aims to be an \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/local\/article\/golden-gate-park-new-memorial-18442588.php\" class=\"\">incredibly special, almost-sacred kind of place<\/a>,\u201d according to members of the nonprofit Bay Area Young Survivors, which conceived of and funded the space.&nbsp;<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>St. Ignatius is getting a massive remodel<br><\/strong><br>The Outer Sunset prep school is making progress on a&nbsp;<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/bayarea\/article\/sf-approve-expansion-st-ignatius-18468336.php\">multimillion-dollar makeover<\/a>&nbsp;that it describes as the \u201cmost ambitious project\u201d in its nearly 170-year history, aimed at bettering the educational experience for students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Our public transportation is electrifying<br><\/strong><br>SF is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefrisc.com\/munis-dream-of-an-electric-fleet-of-sf-buses-suddenly-looks-much-more-like-the-present-3ba4aa6b0e11\" class=\"\">continuing to embrace<\/a>&nbsp;faster, more environmentally friendly technology this year. New legislation could help these projects along, and one of them \u2014 in the&nbsp;<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/local\/article\/san-francisco-office-building-could-become-housing-18096218.php\">historic Warfield building<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 could even be completed in 2024. There are also lots of great deals on all that&nbsp;<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/local\/article\/san-francisco-tech-startup-furniture-resold-18392947.php\">abandoned office furniture<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The techno scene is bouncing back<br><\/strong><br>The Bay Area, and specifically San Francisco, has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/sf-culture\/article\/Home-Base-raves-Oakland-International-Trade-Center-16223043.php\" class=\"\">historically<\/a>&nbsp;been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VFQ87_g41ZA\" class=\"\">a paradise<\/a>&nbsp;for electronic music subcultures. After going quiet during the height of the pandemic, the city\u2019s nightclubs are thumping once more, and a new wave of DJs is ushering in a techno renaissance. Weekend nights see no shortage of foggy, sweaty and strobe-lit rooms. This season could provide the final glimpses of the triad that wrote this legendary chapter in Bay Area sports history.&nbsp;<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The already amazing Tunnel Tops is getting better<br><\/strong><br>This sprawling Presidio park with quintessential Golden Gate Bridge views&nbsp;<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/local\/article\/San-Francisco-Tunnel-Tops-park-open-in-presidio-17309797.php\">finally opened in 2022<\/a>&nbsp;and it was&nbsp;<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/local\/article\/presidio-tunnel-tops-18209037.php\">worth the wait<\/a>. The 14-acre park is equally exciting for children as it is for adults, and it\u2019s poised to get even better. An&nbsp;<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/sfist.com\/2024\/01\/04\/new-fast-casual-cafe-with-golden-gate-views-opens-in-presidio\/\">Italian-style cafe and pizzeria named Il Parco<\/a>&nbsp;is slated to open in January near the entrance, and the city plans to add&nbsp;<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/local\/article\/presidio-tunnel-tops-getting-larger-18197115.php\">an additional 1.5 acres of picnic areas, lawn space and vegetation<\/a>&nbsp;next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A musical remake of a classic SF film hits stages this summer<br><\/strong><br>The \u201cMrs. Doubtfire\u201d musical has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/sf-culture\/article\/mrs-doubtfire-play-san-francisco-17906268.php\" class=\"\">earned both rave and rotten reviews<\/a>, and we\u2019ll finally be able to form our own opinions when it opens at the Orpheum Theatre this July.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"8\" height=\"5\" src=\"https:\/\/occupysf.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image-17.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30992\" title=\"Article Image\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Lasers shoot out of Coit Tower on July 14, 2023, in San Francisco.Adam Pardee\/Special to SFGATE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>More amazing light shows are on their way<br><\/strong><br>In 2023, San Franciscans were perplexed and delighted by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/bayarea\/article\/lasers-sf-night-sky-18490740.php\" class=\"\">colorful lasers<\/a>&nbsp;that shot through the city\u2019s skies from landmarks like Coit Tower, Sutro Tower and the Ferry Building. The nonprofit Illuminate SF still has several ongoing projects on display around the city, like a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/illuminate.org\/projects\/conservatory-of-flowers\/\" class=\"\">multicolored light projection<\/a>&nbsp;that turns the Conservatory of Flowers into a rainbow spectacle and a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/illuminate.org\/projects\/grace-light\/\" class=\"\">curtain of light<\/a>&nbsp;that is occasionally on display inside Grace Cathedral. New iterations are expected to debut this year (the Bay Bridge&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2023\/12\/28\/san-franciscbay-bridge-light-show-could-return-in-2024\/\" class=\"\">may even light up<\/a>&nbsp;once more).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A city park unlike any other is adding more facilities<br><\/strong><br><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/places\/article\/Crane-Cove-Park-opens-san-francisco-15675737.php\">Crane Cove Park<\/a>&nbsp;still feels like an undiscovered gem, and it will feature even more attractions in 2024. Building 49 \u2014 the old, massive hanger on the north side of the space \u2014 is getting revamped as a hub for Dogpatch Paddle, a new YMCA and an outpost of&nbsp;<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/food\/article\/Best-San-Francisco-breakfast-sandwiches-17195317.php\">bagel favorite Daily Driver<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The hottest clubs in San Francisco are \u2026 its art museums<br><\/strong><br>Once you\u2019ve lived in a city long enough, certain civic amenities tend to fade into the background. The best part? But the 49ers entered 2024 with perhaps their best shot at a title yet,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/49ers\/article\/nfc-top-spot-bye-clinched-cardinals-18582917.php\" class=\"\">already clinching home field advantage<\/a>&nbsp;through the NFC title game. They\u2019re the favorites to win it all at almost every sportsbook, and if they can finally complete that long-sought quest for their sixth title&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/49ers\/article\/flights-las-vegas-bay-area-super-bowl-49ers-18582883.php\" class=\"\">in Las Vegas<\/a>, the championship parade will be an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/49ers\/ostler\/article\/49ers-Super-Bowl-parade-would-be-in-San-15000328.php#?utm_campaign=CMS%20Sharing%20Tools%20(Premium)&amp;utm_source=t.co&amp;utm_medium=referral\" class=\"\">undoubtedly raucous party down Market Street<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Our rooftop bar scene is ascending<br><br><\/strong>San Francisco isn\u2019t known for its rooftop bar scene the way New York is, but that\u2019s starting to change. Mission Bay\u2019s Latin American bar Cava\u00f1a and Union Square\u2019s massive Nikkei-style restaurant&nbsp;<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/food\/article\/sf-chotto-matte-largest-rooftop-bar-opens-18443112.php\">Chotto Matte<\/a>&nbsp;both opened last year, and new downtown hotel the Jay also debuted a rooftop terrace restaurant called Third Floor. More rooftop bars are yet to come: We\u2019re expecting to see the revival of the glamorous century-old&nbsp;<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/food\/article\/starlight-room-sf-returns-18554470.php\">Starlight Room (now called Starlite)<\/a>&nbsp;on the 21st floor of the Beacon Grand early this year. It\u2019s only up from here.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Cliff House is coming back, hopefully better than ever<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Park Service&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/bayarea\/article\/lease-awarded-new-restaurant-shop-sf-cliff-house-18365156.php\" class=\"\">awarded a new lease<\/a>&nbsp;on the historic Cliff House, which shuttered in 2020, and the building is slated to undergo a remodel and open in late 2024. It will include a restaurant, cafe, event space and retail shop \u2014 and hopefully secure bike parking. That recently changed when the city opened a new skate park at UN Plaza.&nbsp;<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/local\/article\/san-francisco-new-skatepark-18525160.php\">The skateboarders love it so far<\/a>&nbsp;and even seem to be keeping the troubled area a bit cleaner. I guess the city can do something right?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It\u2019s a great time for comedy lovers<br><\/strong><br>From&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/sf-culture\/article\/ali-wong-masonic-divorce-18561706.php\" class=\"\">extended residencies<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/sf-culture\/article\/trevor-noah-san-francisco-stand-up-review-18532535.php\" class=\"\">with big stars<\/a>&nbsp;to tiny, weekday lineups in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.doloresdeluxe.com\/\" class=\"\">corner stores<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/noevalleyfarmsf\/\" class=\"\">basements<\/a>&nbsp;and restaurants,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/sf-culture\/article\/dave-chappelle-punch-line-review-18267119.php\" class=\"\">San Francisco\u2019s comedy scene<\/a>&nbsp;is thriving. With&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/culture-events\/article\/SF-Sketchest-postponed-indefinitely-covid-cases-16738715.php\" class=\"\">Sketchfest<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/local\/article\/tina-fey-amy-poehler-bay-area-shows-18390496.php\" class=\"\">former \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d stars<\/a>&nbsp;on the docket and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sf.funcheap.com\/category\/event\/event-types\/comedy-event-types-event\/\" class=\"\">dozens<\/a>&nbsp;of smaller shows every week, you never have to have the last laugh.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pier 70 is finally taking shape<br><br><\/strong>Completed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commercialsearch.com\/news\/raising-the-bar-for-the-future-of-san-franciscos-pier-70\/\" class=\"\">renovations<\/a>!&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/local\/article\/san-francisco-pier-70-tenants-17909233.php\" class=\"\">New tenants<\/a>! We\u2019re&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/bayarea\/article\/Giant-Pier-70-waterfront-development-gets-final-12321300.php\" class=\"\">finally<\/a>&nbsp;expecting to see real movement at this new Dogpatch hub this year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Because living in SF feels like a best-kept secret<br><\/strong><br>While the national media attention is focused on San Francisco\u2019s decline, those of us who live here know the real story.
