Israel&#8217;s bombardment of Gaza has killed at least 23,708 people, mostly women and children, according to the latest health ministry figures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0(Photo by Roberto Schmidt\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;We are supposed to believe Biden&#8217;s &#8216;patience is running out&#8217; with Israel while he offers full political support, gives &#8217;emergency&#8217; munitions to fuel the slaughter in Gaza, and is trying to shield his &#8216;great, great friend&#8217; Bibi from international law?&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/author\/jon-queally\">JON QUEALLY<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jan 14, 2024 (CommonDreams.org)<a href=\"https:\/\/giving.commondreams.org\/-\/XKQWGZVR\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The beltway news outlet&nbsp;<em>Axios<\/em>&nbsp;on Sunday&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/01\/14\/biden-netanyahu-israel-gaza-war-tensions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;that President Joe Biden and other administration officials are becoming increasingly frustrated with the Israeli government&#8217;s intransigence on the situation in Gaza, but critics outraged by unwavering U.S. support for the &#8220;genocidal&#8221; attack on Gaza that has been ongoing for 100 days had this to say: Where&#8217;s the substantive evidence for that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Axios<\/em>&nbsp;cited one unnamed official familiar with the hidden sentiments of the White House, who said, &#8220;The situation sucks and we are stuck. The president&#8217;s patience is running out.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The outlet also quoted Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), a close ally of the president, who argued that Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyu &#8220;has given Biden the finger&#8221; at nearly every turn. Administration officials, added Van Hollen, &#8220;are pleading with the Netanyahu coalition, but getting slapped in the face over and over again.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But critical observers like journalist Jeremy Scahill of&nbsp;<em>The Intercept<\/em>&nbsp;met the new reporting with deep skepticism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Let&#8217;s unpack this: We are supposed to believe Biden&#8217;s &#8216;patience is running out&#8217; with Israel while he offers full political support, gives &#8217;emergency&#8217; munitions to fuel the slaughter in Gaza, and is trying to shield his &#8216;great, great friend&#8217; Bibi from international law?&#8221;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jeremyscahill\/status\/1746542085342122234\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tweeted<\/a>&nbsp;Scahill. &#8220;Okay.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Turns out that promising unconditional support no matter what isn&#8217;t a good way to get someone to do something different.&#8221; \u2014Matt Duss, Center for International Policy<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An estimated 400,000 people marched in Washington, D.C. on Saturday to demand a cease-fire in Gaza and denounce the U.S. policy that gives full and unconditional support to Israel, including the massive shipment of arms over the last three months of a bombing campaign and military incursion into Gaza that has killed an estimated 24,000 Palestinians, including more than 10,000 children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Biden has been unwavering in his public support for Israel&#8217;s response to the Hamas-led attacks of October 7 even as the Netanyahu government this past week faced genocide charges at the International Court of Justice for its disproportionate military response, forced displacement, destruction of life-sustaining infrastructure, and refusal of humanitarian aid in Gaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A frustrated Biden is acting like he\u2019s an Eagles fan calling into sports radio. Nothing he can do but gripe. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/kN87vOYzdw\">https:\/\/t.co\/kN87vOYzdw<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Ryan Grim (@ryangrim) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ryangrim\/status\/1746549729016664298?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 14, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following a phone call between the U.S. president and Netanyahu that took place on December 23\u2014which according to the new&nbsp;<em>Axios<\/em>&nbsp;reporting is the last time he has spoken with his Israeli counterpart\u2014Biden&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.voanews.com\/a\/us-abstains-allowing-un-security-council-resolution-on-gaza-to-pass\/7409750.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;he did press about &#8220;the critical need to protect the civilian population&#8221; in Gaza but &#8220;did not ask for a cease-fire.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the international community watched the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/south-africa-icj-genocide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">overhwhelming and devastating<\/a>&#8221; genocide case brought by the South African delegation before the ICJ on Thursday, the position from U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken was that the charges were &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/south-africa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">meritless<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Critics of the U.S. stance found the idea that Biden and other officials are now somehow frustrated difficult to stomach:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u201cBiden \u2018running out\u2019 of patience with Bibi as Gaza war hits\u201d 24,000 dead Palestinians! Leaks about how frustrated he is are among the weakest.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Noting that not once but twice over recent weeks, as&nbsp;<em>Common Dreams<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/u-s-aid-to-israel-2666833315\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;has reported<\/a>, Biden bypassed Congress to approve arms sales to Israel, Duss argued that Biden would have real leverage over Israel if he chose to deploy it in a serious manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Sidestepping Congress twice over the past five weeks to rush ammunition to Israel sends a far clearer message than leaks about the president\u2019s frustration,&#8221; he&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mattduss\/status\/1746548265187758446\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">When I\u2019m frustrated with people and running out of patience with them I too circumvent congress to send them infinite bombs and artillery shells <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/0TKXZXlO3T\">https:\/\/t.co\/0TKXZXlO3T<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Adam Johnson (@adamjohnsonCHI) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/adamjohnsonCHI\/status\/1746539915481952363?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 14, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marking the 100th day of Israel&#8217;s attack on Gaza, the U.S.-based advocacy group Jewish Voice for Peace on Sunday made plain how defenders of Palestinian rights see the U.S. government as complicit in the carnage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In the past 100 days the Israeli government, with full U.S. backing, has worked to systematically wipe out Gaza\u2019s Palestinian population,&#8221; the group&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jvplive\/status\/1746537492684382652\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>JVP said that while it will &#8220;never forget the continued resilience and steadfastness of Palestinians living through this horror,&#8221; it added that it would equally &#8220;never forget the complicity of our government and elected officials in these atrocities.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
