There will be no special southbound service following the ride\u2019s conclusion, Caltrain officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NorCal MLK Foundation&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/norcalmlkfoundation.org\/events\/2024-mlk-march\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">will hold a march and parade<\/a>&nbsp;honoring those marches, as well as the 1965 Voting Rights Act the demonstrations prompted. The route begins at the San Francisco Caltrain station at 11:00 a.m. and ends in Yerba Buena Gardens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Caltrain Executive Director Michelle Bouchard told The Examiner that the agency \u201chas been proud to partner with the NorCal MLK Association in celebrating the legacy of Dr. King for decades through the Celebration Train.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both the train and its route can be traced back to the 1960s, when the late Coretta Scott King launched more than&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.caltrain.com\/blog\/2023\/04\/black-history-month-caltrains-mlk-jr-celebration-train\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">two dozen \u201cFreedom Train\u201d services<\/a>&nbsp;to honor her husband\u2019s life. The Associated Press reported in 2015 that Scott King chose the San Jose-to-San Francisco route because its length was nearly equivalent to that of the 1965 marches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Association of Santa Clara Valley organized the country\u2019s\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/general-news-91970c4f4cf94d0bb5649002a66075c9\" target=\"_blank\">final \u201cFreedom Train\u201d ride in 2015,<\/a>\u00a0and the Northern California Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Foundation-organized\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/mv-voice.com\/news\/2016\/01\/08\/new-celebration-train-to-make-its-debut-ride-on-martin-luther-king-jr-day\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cCelebration Train\u201d debuted a year later<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aaron Grizzell, the NorCal MLK Foundation&#8217;s executive director, told The Examiner that the train &#8220;emerged out of our mutual desire to continue honoring this legacy.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that the service &#8220;speaks to the commitment of our Caltrain partner in ensuring that we honor the importance of the work of Dr. King both now and into the future.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor 160 years, the rails we run on have helped to bring communities together and we invite the public to be a part of that great tradition on Monday,\u201d Bouchard added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Monday\u2019s attendees&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/e\/2024-caltrain-norcalmlk-celebration-train-registration-777205050227?aff=erelexpmlt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">must register in advance<\/a>&nbsp;to reserve a special commemorative ticket, which can also be used for a free return trip that same day after 1 p.m. Quantities are limited to 10 per person, and the commemorative tickets can be picked up at riders\u2019 departing station an hour before travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Planned onboard activities include free giveaways for children, live performances, trivia and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the special train, Caltrain is also running&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.caltrain.com\/media\/32004\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a modified service schedule<\/a>&nbsp;for the holiday. Parking at any of the agency\u2019s stations will cost $2.25 on Monday, which is 50 cents less than the price on a regular day.
