Last week, he won fewer than 3 percent of registered voters in Iowa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today he won just 53 percent of the vote in New Hampshire\u2019s Republican primary, to Nikki Haley\u2019s 45.9 percent. A 7 percent margin is nothing for him to brag about (although he\u2019ll brag).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a former Republican president, his showing tonight in New Hampshire and last Monday in Iowa is pitiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump and his surrogates will undoubtedly try to spin his relatively poor showing in New Hampshire by pointing out that many of the voters were independents rather than Republicans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be sure, according to&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/substack.com\/redirect\/477d3cc9-3db4-4574-99bc-f80eca5ba4be?j=eyJ1IjoiZTBpcSJ9.bWAl25BLPe62fl7RlezMOITuH1P4z_cuwPSwD9m_3WI\">preliminary exit polls<\/a>, around half of voters in today\u2019s New Hampshire Republican primary identified themselves as Republicans, while 45 percent said they were independents (and 6 percent identified themselves as Democrats).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But that\u2019s exactly the point. Even if Trump dominated Haley among Republicans, he did terribly among independents. Which portends problems for him in the general election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump will of course be the Republican nominee. But he\u2019s likely to be an extraordinarily weak candidate in the general election, given that almost&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/substack.com\/redirect\/142c9a6d-f582-4b66-ad86-3ce96b0ff604?j=eyJ1IjoiZTBpcSJ9.bWAl25BLPe62fl7RlezMOITuH1P4z_cuwPSwD9m_3WI\">half&nbsp;<\/a>the entire U.S. electorate is independent, while only 25 percent are Republican (and 25 percent are Democrats).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump\u2019s base adores him.
