That&#8217;s been the work of my first term.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s how U.S. President Joe Biden began the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ChjibtX0UzU&amp;t=24s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">video<\/a>&nbsp;launch of his reelection campaign last year\u2014and now, with the primary season underway, the Democrat continues to emphasize the importance of freedom and the related issue of reproductive healthcare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Republican front-runner, former President Donald Trump, and his MAGA movement have made clear that they are foes of abortion rights and other reproductive justice priorities, but Biden has work to do to win over some&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/democracy-threats-biden-trump-2024-pennsylvania-176e42a3877eaf33160c71d1b73c96cd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">frustrated<\/a>&nbsp;voters, including those outraged about the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/gaza-maternity-care\">maternal health crisis<\/a>&nbsp;created by the U.S.-backed Israeli war on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/gaza\">Gaza<\/a>&nbsp;Strip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">It\u2019s really hard to believe that \u201cgenocide is a reproductive justice issue\u201d is a controversial statement among people who allegedly care about (white women\u2019s) access to reproductive healthcare.<br><br>Excellent reporting from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AlannaVagianos?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@AlannaVagianos<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/SgtDtxlaur\">https:\/\/t.co\/SgtDtxlaur<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/PCYu3Vw9sx\">https:\/\/t.co\/PCYu3Vw9sx<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Hayley McMahon, MSPH, CPH (@McMisoprostol) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/McMisoprostol\/status\/1758586912825037277?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 16, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Biden is backed by national groups such as EMILY&#8217;s List, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, and Reproductive Freedom for All, but the devastation of Gaza has caused a &#8220;growing rift in the reproductive rights movement,&#8221;&nbsp;<em>HuffPost<\/em>&#8216;s Alanna Vagianos&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/biden-israel-support-fractures-reproductive-rights-movement_n_65ce3765e4b04daca6961613\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vagianos pointed to the January rally marking what would have been the 51st&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/abortion-rights-in-the-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">anniversary<\/a>&nbsp;of&nbsp;<em>Roe v.&nbsp;<\/em><em>Wade<\/em>\u2014the landmark abortion rights ruling&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/06\/24\/dark-day-our-nation-right-wing-supreme-court-ends-constitutional-right-abortion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">overturned<\/a>&nbsp;in June 2022 by the right-wing U.S. Supreme Court to which Trump appointed three justices:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>The president was interrupted over a dozen times as security struggled to wrangle protesters who were screaming &#8220;Genocide Joe!&#8221; and demanding a cease-fire. Hundreds of Biden supporters tried to drown out the protesters by clapping and chanting, &#8220;Four more years!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Israel kills two mothers every hour in Gaza! Cease-fire now! End the genocide!&#8221; one protester yelled at Biden, who was standing on stage in front of a massive &#8220;Restore Roe&#8221; banner and flanked by supporters holding &#8220;Defend choice&#8221; signs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/C2dbftfxWlK\/?igsh=aHYwOWgzN3p4ODlq\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">video<\/a>&nbsp;of the event shows Alexis McGill Johnson, the president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, clad in her trademark hot-pink pantsuit, standing up and chanting &#8220;Four more years!&#8221; as security dragged the shouting protester out.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<em>HuffPost<\/em>&nbsp;spoke with over a dozen people who work for reproductive justice causes\u2015including current Planned Parenthood employees, legal experts, nurse midwives, abortion fund workers, and clinic staffers from across the country\u2015who say that Biden&#8217;s unwavering support for Israel has fractured the movement,&#8221; Vagianos added. &#8220;The rift has left those who support Palestinians to feel&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/prismreports.org\/2024\/02\/13\/reproductive-rights-organizations-failing-palestinians\/#:~:text=As%20Palestinians%20in%20Gaza%20suffer,to%20question%20the%20purpose%20and\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ostracized by the larger reproductive rights groups<\/a>&nbsp;and questioning whether they can vote for Biden in November.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/ReproWorkers\/status\/1758519577074335801?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1758519577074335801%7Ctwgr%5E926a5513462233ce3f82c903055b8107812c649b%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2Fbiden-abortion<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frustration with Biden&#8217;s response to what other world leaders and legal scholars are calling Israel&#8217;s genocidal war on Gaza\u2014which has killed nearly 29,000 Palestinians\u2014is far from limited to those campaigning for or working in reproductive healthcare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Right now, we feel completely neglected and just unseen by our government,&#8221; U.S. Rep.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/rashida-tlaib\">Rashida Tlaib<\/a>&nbsp;(D-Mich.), the only Palestinian American in Congress,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/listen-to-michigan\">said<\/a>&nbsp;in a Saturday video supporting the Listen to Michigan campaign, which is urging Democrats to vote uncommitted in the February 27 presidential primary to send Biden a message on Gaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michigan has large numbers of Arab and Muslim Americans. It is also a swing state where residents narrowly supported Biden over Trump in 2020. Two years later, just after the&nbsp;<em>Roe<\/em>&nbsp;reversal, they&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/11\/09\/seismic-win-michigan-voters-approve-constitutional-amendment-protect-abortion-rights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">voted<\/a>&nbsp;to enshrine abortion rights in the state&#8217;s constitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After&nbsp;<em>The New York Times<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/02\/16\/us\/politics\/trump-abortion-ban.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;Friday that &#8220;Trump has told advisers and allies that he likes the idea of a 16-week national abortion ban&#8221; with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/texas-abortion-ban-exceptions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">exceptions<\/a>&nbsp;for rape, incest, or saving the pregnant person&#8217;s life, Democratic Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/gretchenwhitmer\/status\/1758569344605548818?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">joined<\/a>&nbsp;Biden&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SenGillibrand\/status\/1758527870786285719?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">allies<\/a>&nbsp;in advocating for reelecting him and Vice President Kamala Harris &#8220;to protect reproductive rights.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A vote for Donald Trump is a vote for a national abortion ban. This is not a moderate position or a compromise. <br><br>Abortion is safe, essential, and supported by a majority of Americans.<br><br>That\u2019s the message we\u2019ll send when we re-elect <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JoeBiden?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@JoeBiden<\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/vU8gwmrtgB\">https:\/\/t.co\/vU8gwmrtgB<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Cecile Richards (@CecileRichards) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CecileRichards\/status\/1758543506853761165?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 16, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a Friday statement about the reporting, Biden said that &#8220;<em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>&nbsp;is no longer the law of the land. And that&#8217;s because of one person: Donald Trump. In fact, Trump brags about being the one to overturn&nbsp;<em>Roe<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Kamala and I will restore&nbsp;<em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>&nbsp;and make it once again the law of the land. Donald Trump will ban abortion nationwide. That is what is at stake this November,&#8221; he added. &#8220;Our democracy. Our fundamental freedoms.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>&nbsp;then&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/02\/17\/us\/politics\/trump-allies-abortion-restrictions.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;Saturday that Trump allies and former officials &#8220;are planning ways to restrict abortion rights if he returns to power that would go far beyond proposals for a national ban or the laws enacted in conservative states across the country.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the newspaper detailed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>In policy documents, private conversations, and interviews, the plans described by former Trump administration officials, allies, and supporters propose circumventing Congress and leveraging the regulatory powers of federal institutions, including the Department of Health and Human Services, the Food and Drug Administration, the Department of Justice, and the National Institutes of Health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The effect would be to create a second Trump administration that would attack abortion rights and abortion access from a variety of angles and could be stopped only by courts that the first Trump administration had already stacked with conservative judges.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Biden campaign manager Julie Ch\u00e1vez Rodr\u00edguez responded that &#8220;it&#8217;s never been clearer what the American people can expect from Donald Trump: If given power, he will circumvent Congress and further rip away women&#8217;s healthcare, including attempting to unilaterally institute a national abortion ban. These plans are as terrifying as they are unsurprising.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leaders of national groups also weighed in with comments circulated by Biden&#8217;s campaign. McGill Johnson called Trump &#8220;a disaster for democracy and a disaster for sexual and reproductive healthcare,&#8221; while EMILY&#8217;s List interim president Jessica Mackler declared that &#8220;there is a clear choice in November: Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, who have worked consistently to protect our rights, or Donald Trump and his Republican allies, who want to take our decisions and our rights away.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reproductive Freedom for All president and CEO Mini Timmaraju said: &#8220;The most chilling part of the playbook of horrors Trump&#8217;s advisers have cooked up is how confident they are that he can do untold damage in a second term\u2014with or without Congress. Here is Trump&#39;s attorney, Jonathan Mitchell, hoping voters won&#39;t know what to expect until after the election:<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/jDZswfITr1\">https:\/\/t.co\/jDZswfITr1<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/oWKZySzRQB\">pic.twitter.com\/oWKZySzRQB<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Mary Ziegler (@maryrziegler) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/maryrziegler\/status\/1758894937788313645?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 17, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As&nbsp;<em>Common Dreams<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/biden-abortion-on-demand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;earlier this month, Biden has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/01\/21\/politics\/biden-campaign-abortion-rights-donald-trump\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">centered<\/a>&nbsp;his support for abortion rights on the campaign trail but also come under fire for some recent remarks. While fundraising in New York City\u2014where he&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/jewish-protest-cease-fire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">faced<\/a>&nbsp;Gaza-related protests\u2014he said: &#8220;I&#8217;m a practicing Catholic. I don&#8217;t want abortion on demand but I thought&nbsp;<em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>&nbsp;was right.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Renee Bracey Sherman, an organizer and abortion storyteller, said that &#8220;if Biden insists on hinging his entire campaign on abortion because it&#8217;s more popular than he is, it would behoove him to actually use the messaging that we use to talk about abortion, without stigma, rather than throwing all of us who had abortions on demand under the bus.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
