I am personally on the hook,&#8221; Oliver said.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/public\/assets\/BI\/US\/logos\/newsletters\/insider-today-logo.png\" alt=\"Insider Today\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/public\/assets\/rebrand\/newsletter-bull.png\" alt=\"Bull\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/john-oliver-claps-back-at-elon-musk-thin-skin-2024-1\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">John Oliver<\/a>&nbsp;says he will give Supreme Court Justice&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/photos-life-career-supreme-court-justice-clarence-thomas-2023-2\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Clarence Thomas<\/a>&nbsp;a million bucks a year if he quits the Supreme Court immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This is not a joke,&#8221; he said on the latest episode of &#8220;Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,&#8221; which aired Sunday. &#8220;This is real. A million dollars a year until you or I die.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides offering Thomas money, Oliver said he would also throw in a $2.4 million motor coach. The offer, he said, would be valid only for the next 30 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;So that&#8217;s the offer. A million dollars a year and a brand new condo on wheels, and all you have to do in return is sign the contract and get the fuck off the Supreme Court,&#8221; Oliver said on the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oliver made the hefty offer during the season premiere of his Emmy-award-winning show. Oliver spent most of the episode discussing the Supreme Court and the issues he said were plaguing it \u2014 one of them being Thomas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the segment, Oliver accused Thomas of having various conflicts of interest, including&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/clarence-thomas-luxury-vacations-gop-megadonor-harlan-crow-report-says-2023-4\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">accepting lavish vacations<\/a>&nbsp;from a Republican Party megadonor and&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/clarence-thomas-recusal-ethics-allegations-supreme-court-2023-10\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">refusing to recuse himself<\/a>&nbsp;on cases involving his wife, Ginni.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Associate Justices such as Thomas earn an&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uscourts.gov\/judges-judgeships\/judicial-compensation\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">annual salary of $298,500<\/a>&nbsp;and hold their appointments for life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023, ProPublica published several reports about Thomas&#8217; close relationship with several billionaires, including the real-estate developer&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/who-is-harlan-crow-clarence-thomas-trips-billionaire-gop-megadonor-2023-4\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Harlan Crow<\/a>&nbsp;and the oil tycoon&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/clarence-thomas-undisclosed-luxury-vacations-cost-millions-scotus-ethics-2023-8\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Paul &#8220;Tony&#8221; Novelly<\/a>. Thomas accepted gifts from these businessmen without disclosing them, ProPublica reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2001,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2001\/05\/13\/thomas-cries-heart-out-in-speech\/\"><u>The New York Post<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;reported that Thomas said during a speech that he thought the job of a Supreme Court justice was &#8220;not worth doing for what they pay.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The job is not worth doing for the grief. But it is worth doing for the principle,&#8221; Thomas told the Bar Association in Savannah, Georgia, according to the Post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oliver says he now has a simple solution for Thomas, which pays well, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Clarence Thomas is arguably the most consequential justice on the court right now, and he&#8217;s never really seemed to like the job. He&#8217;s said it&#8217;s not worth doing &#8216;for the grief,'&#8221; Oliver said of Thomas during his Sunday show. &#8220;So what if he could keep the luxury perks that he clearly enjoys without having to endure all of that grief?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oliver said he&#8217;d spoken to legal experts, who told him his offer was &#8220;somehow legal&#8221; and &#8220;there are no rules in place&#8221; to stop him from making such an offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Let me be clear. HBO is not putting up the money for this. I am personally on the hook,&#8221; Oliver said. &#8220;You can make me really regret this.
