Is fascism on the rise in the United States? Some FrameLab readers have argued that we should be using the word \u201cfascist\u201d instead of \u201cauthoritarian,\u201d \u201cconservative\u201d or \u201cright-wing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They make a very good point. But what, exactly, is fascism? In \u201cHow Fascism Works<\/a>: The Politics of Us and Them,\u201d Yale University Professor Jason Stanley<\/a> lists the ten main elements of fascism. We have summarized them below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Key questions:<\/strong> Which of these elements do we see invading our politics today? Are all of the elements present, or only some? The 10 Elements of Fascism, from \u201cHow Fascism Works\u201d:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. The Mythic Past<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Fascist politics invokes a glorified, mythological past that has supposedly been destroyed or undermined by liberal, foreign, or otherwise corrupting influences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Propaganda<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The use of propaganda to manipulate or control the public narrative is a hallmark of fascist politics. This often involves the use of misleading or blatantly false information to shape public perception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Anti-intellectualism<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Fascist movements often distrust intellectuals or the academic establishment, viewing them as part of the corrupt or degenerate elite, and as a threat to the \u201ccommon sense\u201d of the people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Unreality<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The creation of a disorienting, alternate reality through the repeated assertion of falsehoods, conspiracy theories, and the blurring of fact and opinion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Hierarchy<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The belief in a natural social hierarchy, as well as the supremacy of certain groups over others based on race, ethnicity, or nationality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Victimhood<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Fascists often position their in-group as the victims of an injustice perpetrated by out-groups, thereby justifying any action taken against these supposed enemies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. Law and Order<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

A strong emphasis on law and order, often as a pretext for suppressing political dissent and marginalizing minority groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8. Sexual Anxiety<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The exploitation of sexual anxiety as a way to rally support for fascist causes, often through the control and subjugation of women\u2019s bodies and the demonization of others\u2019 sexual practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9. Sodom and Gomorrah<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The portrayal of cosmopolitan or urban areas \u2014 cities \u2014 as places of moral decay, in contrast to the purity of the rural or traditional heartland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10. \u201cArbeit Macht Frei\u201d<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The glorification of work and the stigmatization of those perceived as not contributing to the labor force, often used to target minority groups or the unemployed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
