Israel\u2019s channel 11 aired this 30 second segment from my speech, insanely called it \u201canti semitic\u201d &#8211; and I\u2019ve been receiving death threats since. I stand behind every word. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/2burPfZeKO\">pic.twitter.com\/2burPfZeKO<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Yuval Abraham \u05d9\u05d5\u05d1\u05dc \u05d0\u05d1\u05e8\u05d4\u05dd (@yuval_abraham) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/yuval_abraham\/status\/1761857460434825366?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 25, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adra followed Abraham&#8217;s remarks by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/derJamesJackson\/status\/1761689807808319725\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">calling on<\/a>&nbsp;Germany to &#8220;respect the [United Nations] calls and stop sending weapons to Israel,&#8221; garnering applause from the audience, as he noted that the support of Western countries has allowed at least&nbsp;<strong><\/strong>29,782 Palestinians in Gaza to be &#8220;slaughtered and massacred&#8221; by Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Israeli public broadcaster,&nbsp;<em>Kan,&nbsp;<\/em>promptly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sfardm\/status\/1761974712064790532\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">labeled<\/a>&nbsp;Abraham&#8217;s remarks an &#8220;antisemitic speech,&#8221; while Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner denounced the statement and those of several other Palestinian rights supporters at the awards ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Abraham&#8217;s statement, filmmaker Ben Russell&#8217;s decision to wear a traditional Palestinian keffiyeh, and filmmaker Eliza Hittman&#8217;s call for a cease-fire\u2014a demand supported by international human rights groups, the vast majority of member states at the U.N. General Assembly, and numerous U.N. agencies\u2014were&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefilmstage.com\/berlinale-faces-crisis-as-no-other-land-director-receives-death-threats-and-berlin-mayor-threatens-artists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reduced<\/a>&nbsp;to &#8220;an intolerable relativization,&#8221; according to Wegner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The city&#8217;s culture minister&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/israel-criticism-at-berlinale-sparks-controversy\/a-68374724\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;the awards ceremony was &#8220;characterized by self-righteous anti-Israeli propaganda,&#8221; while the federal commissioner for culture and the media said Monday that the government will open an investigation into the filmmakers&#8217; statements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A number of artists, who are not employees of the festival and are not beholden to it, peacefully spoke their minds about Palestine. What is there to investigate? This is appalling. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/qCOPGhtRD3\">https:\/\/t.co\/qCOPGhtRD3<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Guy Lodge (@GuyLodge) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GuyLodge\/status\/1762167773638111470?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 26, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The outrage over the calls for an end to Israel&#8217;s bombardment and oppression of Palestinians amounted to &#8220;authoritarian insanity,&#8221;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mehdirhasan\/status\/1762113123190710484\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;journalist Mehdi Hasan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mickey Gitzin, director of the Israeli social justice group New Israel Fund,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MickeyGitzin\/status\/1761991941476995077\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">posited<\/a>&nbsp;that the reaction to Abraham&#8217;s comments in the country&#8217;s news media &#8220;indicates more than anything else the great embarrassment of most Israelis about the reality of life we are creating in the West Bank.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It is impossible to be a person with conscience and morals, to look at reality and live with it in peace,&#8221; said Gitzin. &#8220;Therefore, most of us simply prefer to close our eyes, and those who are really careful, seek to kill the messenger.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the film festival, Berlinale&#8217;s official Instagram page was hacked by activists who posted messages including: &#8220;Genocide is genocide.
