More than 100 marchers, including many parents and children, rallied Saturday on the Golden Gate Bridge in support of Palestinians under siege in Gaza as a humanitarian crisis there continues to unfold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Organized by the grassroots feminist group Code Pink SF Bay Area, protesters carried props representing sacks of flour to highlight the grave lack of food, water and other resources for Palestinians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are 2 million people starving right now in Gaza,\u201d said Toby Blom\u00e9, an organizer with Code Pink, addressing about two dozen people outside the bridge\u2019s Welcome Center before the march.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dire conditions in Gaza have continued to spur protests across the United States since Israel launched a war in response to Hamas militants\u2019 deadly Oct. 7 assault. The war has killed more than 30,000 Palestinians, including 10,000 children, in addition to 1,400 Israelis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marchers took to the bridge sidewalk just after noon, chanting slogans such as \u201cCease-fire now\u201d and \u201cStop bombing children!\u201d Many passing motorists honked their horns in solidarity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Riding by the protesters on a bicycle, Laurie Bendell pumped a fist and cheered them on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visiting from West Palm Beach, Fla., Bendell said she came to the city for a friend\u2019s memorial service and was heartened to see protesters bring the cause to such a public place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bendell said she was in Tel Aviv in October when Hamas invaded Israel, killing at least 1,200 people and taking another 240 hostage. She remained in Israel as the government launched its brutal retaliation. \u201cI heard bombs dropping all day,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have Jewish family and Palestinian friends,\u201d she said. \u201cTo me, there\u2019s no justification for 30,000 dead.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruby Enriquez, who had driven from Fairfield and was pushing her 10-month-old daughter in a stroller, bundled in blankets, said: \u201cYou can\u2019t call yourself a feminist and not support the women of Gaza. I\u2019m pushing myself to be uncomfortable because they\u2019re uncomfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruby Kazi of Sunnyvale came with her daughters, ages 10 and 14, carrying signs referencing the shorthand acronym doctors in Palestine use for injured and orphaned children: WCNSF or \u201cwounded child, no surviving family.\u201d   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Golden Gate Bridge \u201cis such an iconic place\u201d to rally, Kazi said. \u201cAs a parent, the devastation in Gaza is the saddest thing I\u2019ve ever seen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Golden Gate Bridge District officers intervened when one of the protesters began writing \u201cFree Gaza\u201d in purple chalk on the sidewalk. \u201cYou can\u2019t do that.  It\u2019s district ordinance,\u201d an officer said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carrying a sign reading \u201cNo tax $$ 4 genocide,\u201d City College of San Francisco instructor Kathe Burick said the timing of the protest a day after International Women\u2019s Day was meant to underscore the critical plight of families in the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo many women and children are being killed in this massacre,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
