The Alaska Republican, a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump, said she regrets that the GOP \u201cis seemingly becoming a party of\u201d Trump.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Sen. Lisa Murkowski, a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump<\/a>, signaled that she would be open to leaving the Republican Party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pressed on whether she is considering becoming an independent, Murkowski replied, \u201cI\u2019m very independent-minded,\u201d adding, \u201cI just regret that our party is seemingly becoming a party of Donald Trump<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Murkowski demurred when asked whether she would be open to being an independent who caucuses with Republicans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am navigating my way through some very interesting political times. Let\u2019s just leave it at that,\u201d she said in an interview that aired on CNN<\/a> Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Alaska Republican also reiterated her stance against voting for Trump in the 2024 presidential election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI wish that as Republicans, we had a nominee that I could get behind. I certainly can\u2019t get behind Donald Trump,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Murkowski told NBC News this month that she \u201ccould not\u201d vote for Trump<\/a> or President Joe Biden in the 2024 election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Murkowski and fellow Trump critic Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, had endorsed Trump challenger Nikki Haley<\/a> ahead of Super Tuesday. But Haley dropped her bid<\/a> after losing every primary contest except Vermont and Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before Haley ended her campaign, Murkowski told NBC News that she wasn\u2019t sure how she\u2019d approach the presidential election if Haley dropped out \u2014 and signaled she wasn\u2019t alone in her uncertainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLisa Murkowski is not the only one in this camp right now,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Murkowski is among the seven Republican senators who voted to convict Trump <\/a>in his second impeachment trial after the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack and became a target for Trump and his allies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Murkowski, who has served in the Senate for more than two decades, won re-election in 2022<\/a> against Trump-endorsed Kelly Tshibaka, a former Alaska Department of Administration commissioner.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
