She contended herself with spring rolls, shish kebabs with rice noodles, lemon beef salad, fried fish and Tsingtao beer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week, I finally ran out of excuses and agreed to meet my friend for lunch at&nbsp;T\u00fa Lan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Sab-24-03-25b-572x257.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"572\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Sab-24-03-25b-572x257.png 572w, https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Sab-24-03-25b-960x432.png 960w, https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Sab-24-03-25b-768x346.png 768w, https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Sab-24-03-25b-1536x691.png 1536w, https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Sab-24-03-25b.png 1920w\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-50828\">Julia Child Ate at T\u00fa Lan<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It had been a few years since I had been to&nbsp;T\u00fa Lan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I used to have lunch there frequently with my friend, GraceAnn Walden who wrote for the SF Chronicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I gave her \u201cdeep dish\u201d (restaurant information) for her column, Inside Scoop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back then, there were more restaurant openings than closings in the City to write about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ironically, nowadays, I can\u2019t keep up with giving \u201cdeep dish\u201d to the media about retail closings in the City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I wish those stores were organized together to announce at the same time that they were closing their stores so that we didn\u2019t have to read about it every week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In March 2023, I walked from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/my-walk-from-sfs-financial-district-to-mid-market\/\">the Financial District to Mid-Market to test the pulse of downtown San Francisco<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At that time, I felt that the Financial District was already in a coma but I still felt pulses in Mid-Market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/is-the-heart-of-san-francisco-still-beating\/\">Shortly after my walk<\/a>, several retail stores along Market Street including Nordstrom in Westfield Mall announced their closures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like the domino effect, there were many more retail closures in Mid-Market and even spread to Union Square.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SF Chronicle shows&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/projects\/2023\/san-francisco-downtown-closing\/\">the map<\/a>&nbsp;of every major retail closure this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The City invites universities to open a campus downtown to fill vacancies but&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2024\/03\/14\/tenderloin-lawsuit-san-francisco-drug-containment-zone\/\">it fails<\/a>&nbsp;to keep the area around its existing campus,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2024\/02\/26\/university-california-law-sf-campus-housing-tenderloin\/\">UC Law SF<\/a>&nbsp;clean and safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Sab-24-03-25c-572x257.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"572\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Sab-24-03-25c-572x257.png 572w, https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Sab-24-03-25c-960x432.png 960w, https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Sab-24-03-25c-768x346.png 768w, https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Sab-24-03-25c-1536x691.png 1536w, https:\/\/beyondchron.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Sab-24-03-25c.png 1920w\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-50829\">Market and 7th Streets<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To lure businesses and people back to downtown, the City must first clean up its streets and change the image of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2024\/01\/05\/san-francisco-drug-users-tenderloin-posters\/\">Downtown Is For Drug Users<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by\u00a0Sebastian\u00a0on\u00a0March 25, 2024 (BeyondChron.org) Market Between Sixth And Seventh Streets My friend had been asking me for months to have lunch with him at&nbsp;T\u00fa Lan restaurant in the heart of the City\u2019s troubled 6th and Market Streets.
