I think it should be taken as a response driven by the almost complete collapse of respect for the Court. Forty six percent of Americans disapprove of the way the Court is handling its job. If we ever get a working ethical Congress again, I would hope they would eliminate the Electoral College, limit the age and term of Supreme Court Justices as retired Associate Justice Breyer advocates, and create publicly funded elections. I don\u2019t think we are going to save American democracy without these changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.schwartzreport.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/image-57.png?resize=800%2C450&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-87945\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Stephen Breyer worries about Supreme Court\u2019s public standing in current political era Credit: CNN<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Former Supreme Court Justice&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2022\/06\/29\/stephen-breyer-retire-supreme-court-jackson\">Stephen Breyer<\/a>&nbsp;signaled his support for age and term limits in the nation\u2019s highest court, in a Sunday interview with NBC\u2019s \u201cMeet the Press.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why it matters:&nbsp;<\/strong>Breyer\u2019s comments come as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/politics\/2023\/09\/19\/how-americans-view-proposals-to-change-the-political-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent polling<\/a>&nbsp;shows a majority of Americans&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2022\/07\/25\/supreme-court-term-limits-poll-roe\">support age limits<\/a>&nbsp;in the court and the court has faced&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2023\/08\/02\/america-us-supreme-court-poll-approval\">historically low approval ratings<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What he\u2019s saying:&nbsp;<\/strong>\u201cI don\u2019t think that\u2019s harmful,\u201d Breyer told \u201cMeet The Press\u201d moderator Kristen Welker, adding that court justices could serve \u201clong terms.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cWhy long? Because I don\u2019t think you want someone who\u2019s appointed to the Supreme Court to be thinking about his next job,\u201d Breyer said.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cAnd so, a 20-year term? I don\u2019t know, 18? Long term? Fine. Fine,\u201d he said.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Breyer said<\/strong>&nbsp;term limits would have helped him avoid \u201cgoing through difficult decisions\u201d in deciding when it was time to retire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cYou\u2019ve been there for quite a while, and other people also should have a chance at these jobs.
