{"id":32950,"date":"2024-04-16T12:34:31","date_gmt":"2024-04-16T19:34:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/occupysf.net\/?p=32950"},"modified":"2024-04-16T12:34:32","modified_gmt":"2024-04-16T19:34:32","slug":"protests-block-golden-gate-bridge-all-northbound-lanes-of-880-in-oakland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/occupysf.net\/index.php\/2024\/04\/16\/protests-block-golden-gate-bridge-all-northbound-lanes-of-880-in-oakland\/","title":{"rendered":"Protests Block Golden Gate Bridge, All Northbound Lanes of 880 In Oakland"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>15 APRIL 2024\/<a href=\"https:\/\/sfist.com\/news\/\">SF NEWS<\/a>\/<a href=\"https:\/\/sfist.com\/author\/jay-barmann\/\">JAY BARMANN<\/a> (SFist.com)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tax Day protests over the war in Gaza have caused a commute nightmare for anyone trying to get to San Francisco from the North Bay, or anyone traveling north on I-880 toward Oakland or San Francisco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first demonstration, in which protesters chained themselves to barrels and completely blocked the northbound lanes of I-880 near 5th Street in downtown Oakland, began around 6:30 am. According to the CHP, the protest was ongoing as of 8:05 am and traffic was backed up well past the Coliseum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Photos from the scene showed a line of CHP officers in riot gear behind the small line of protesters, who were sitting in the roadway wearing keffiyehs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Referring to today&#8217;s date, April 15, their banner read, &#8220;A15 Economic Protest for Free Palestine.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Update:<\/strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/bayarea\/article\/gaza-protest-interstate-880-oakland-19403609.php\">The Chronicle reports<\/a>&nbsp;that other protests have erupted around Oakland that were blocking traffic, including one that blocked the Broadway exit on Southbound I-880 in West Oakland, near 7th Street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">PHOTOS: &#39;Free Palestine&#39; protesters block part of I-880 in Oakland <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/BJMdPc3PEe\">https:\/\/t.co\/BJMdPc3PEe<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/JZSAvGzOmW\">pic.twitter.com\/JZSAvGzOmW<\/a><\/p>&mdash; KTVU (@KTVU) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KTVU\/status\/1779879648148480315?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 15, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An hour after that protest began, around 7:30 am, around 60 protesters blocked the southbound lanes of the Golden Gate Bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They were holding a banner saying &#8220;Stop the World for Gaza.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of 8:48 am, KCBS radio reported that all lanes of the Golden Gate Bridge were blocked because CHP had blocked the northbound lanes in order to safely access the southbound lanes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Update:<\/strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/sanfrancisco\/video\/raw-video-pro-palestinian-protesters-being-detained-on-golden-gate-bridge\/\">KPIX has raw video<\/a>&nbsp;showing the protesters being detained by CHP officers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Expect traffic to be backed up onto Park Presidio, and potentially back to Lombard Street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Update 2:<\/strong>&nbsp;The SF Department of Emergency Management said as of 12:40 pm that both directions of traffic had been cleared on the Golden Gate Bridge, but to expect residual delays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Now both directions of the Golden Gate Bridge are blocked.
