Or at least that\u2019s what a satirical \u2014 and successful \u2014 candidate in the university\u2019s recent&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/lead.berkeley.edu\/student-government\/get-involved\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"\">student government<\/a>&nbsp;elections is saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week, Furry Boi, a squirrel from Berkeley\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/creeks.berkeley.edu\/eucalyptus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"\">eucalyptus grove<\/a>, won a student&nbsp;senate seat for the next academic year alongside 19 human candidates. And he barely squeaked in, coming in with the second-lowest&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailycal.org\/news\/campus\/asuc\/asuc_elections_2024\/live-results-from-the-2024-asuc-general-elections\/article_81baa528-f91b-11ee-9990-73fe587cf034.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"\">number of votes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it\u2019s not all as nuts as it may sound: A person is behind the squirrel. Ethan Hu, a 19-year-old sophomore computer science major from the Bay Area, told SFGATE he wanted to avoid a performative campaign that would be just for his resume, which can be a trait of some student government candidates.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI would have a few actual gripes that campus culture had about the student senate,\u201d he said. \u201cBut it\u2019s also an extended April Fools\u2019 joke that somehow snowballed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailycal.org\/news\/campus\/asuc\/asuc_elections_2024\/meet-the-asuc-senate-candidates-running-for-greater-asuc-transparency\/article_f72e68e8-f4a8-11ee-8fa1-73baa097e1d5.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"\">Furry Boi\u2019s candidate profile<\/a>&nbsp;published in the Daily Californian last week, his platform centered on \u201cpublic housing for squirrels and students, better access to acorns and support groups for those experiencing habitat loss.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though Hu has not yet decided whether he\u2019ll take his seat, he said a push for more housing is not a joke. It\u2019s just that he wanted to give satirical mapping to actual human issues.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI could probably base a fake press release on the premise that landlords in Berkeley are getting so greedy, they\u2019re starting to evict squirrels,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hu said his independent campaign consisted of just him, while other candidates had a staff of people working with them. Not expecting to win, he arrived late after votes were counted Friday and didn\u2019t even hear Furry Boi\u2019s name being announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI thought they were pulling my leg\u2026 I thought they were mocking me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailycal.org\/news\/campus\/asuc\/asuc_elections_2024\/transfer-memssa-representation-make-asuc-senate-comeback-despite-plummeting-turnout\/article_a6355de8-f94e-11ee-948f-a7451b022369.html\" target=\"_blank\">Daily Californian reported<\/a>&nbsp;that during the vote tabulation, the news of Furry Boi\u2019s victory was greeted with \u201csilence and groans.\u201d But this isn\u2019t the first time Furry&nbsp;Boi has thrown his nut into the ring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2018, the first&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/bayarea\/article\/cal-students-elect-squirrel-to-student-body-12848656.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"\">Furry Boi candidate won election<\/a>&nbsp;to the Associated Students of the University of California senate when then-sophomore Stephen Boyle campaigned on a wide-ranging platform, which included advocating for students with disabilities and creating a squirrel sidekick named Nutty McNut Nut. Backed by UC Berkeley Memes for Edgy Teens on Facebook, Boyle even wore a squirrel suit and did take office.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though he revived the Furry Boi campaign, Hu lacked any endorsements during his run and did not don a costume.
