There\u2019s no room to place planters. This forces me to engage unhoused or unstable people, where I must call 311 or 911 to address the issue. This happens about once or twice a month.&nbsp;We also need to appreciate that planters are a benign solution that prevents vigilantism. I reconsidered after canvassing many neighborhoods in the city where they are located. Most of them have been left neglected, vandalized, and filled with garbage and just plain dirt. They also take a considerable amount of space. If community members are determined to fill the space, we can at least do so with something valuable to everyone. Shaded benches, water dispensers, garbage cans, and even a bike rack are just a few examples. Brown.\" class=\"wp-image-582564\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-h-brown\">h brown<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Job:&nbsp;<\/strong>Retired special education teacher<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Age:&nbsp;<\/strong>80<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Residency:&nbsp;<\/strong>Tenant, at current address for nine years, redistricted into District 9 in April 2022<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Transportation:&nbsp;<\/strong>Walking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Education:&nbsp;<\/strong>Bachelor\u2019s in education and Master\u2019s in Special Education from Clemson University&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Languages:&nbsp;<\/strong>English<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>No, sidewalks are for walking and pushing baby carriages and for wheelchairs and hopscotch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The doppelganger question is, \u2018where do we put the homeless?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019d say public schools are the most intelligent choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re down enrollment by 8,000, which is also number of homeless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lincoln and Harding Golf Courses would make great campgrounds and have the added plus of large parking lots to accommodate motorhomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Treasure Island Project is bankrupt, which frees up another couple of hundred acres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or, as most mayoral candidates are proposing, we could put more and more of them in jail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/missionloca.s3.amazonaws.com\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/D9-Candidate-Torres-640x640.png?resize=640%2C640&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"A cartoon of supervisorial candidate Stephen Torres.\" class=\"wp-image-579866\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-stephen-torres\">Stephen Torres<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Job<\/strong>: Bartender at Twin Peaks Tavern, customer service at Flowercraft Nursery and freelance writer&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Age<\/strong>: 46<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Residency<\/strong>: Tenant, lived in District 9 Summer 2001 to Fall 2003, and returned in the Summer 2010<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Transportation<\/strong>: Public<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Education<\/strong>: Moorpark Community College and San Francisco City College as work has permitted<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Languages<\/strong>: English and Spanish&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I have long advocated for the greening of our district, increasing its canopy and removing hardscape for aquifer recharge\/flood mitigation.&nbsp;Although planters can be utilized to provide beauty or space for micro vegetable gardens, we instead have seen a glut of planters&nbsp; that are often eyesores themselves. They are often unmaintained, end up as repositories for garbage and dead plants, do not offer any of the aforementioned benefits, and serve little other purpose than to make sidewalks uninviting and often impassable. Sidewalks are pedestrian spaces and require intentionality and mindfulness. The city has hundreds of permanent supportive housing units sitting empty. Our system of care for people struggling with mental health, substance use disorder, and homelessness simultaneously simply does not exist. We have a major staffing crisis that has thwarted major progress on these issues. Our unhoused population deserves dignity and long-term solutions. We haven\u2019t built enough affordable housing, and our shelters and navigation centers are full.
