Photo credit: Kelly Waldron, Shutterstock and Xueer Lu.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2024\/06\/la-nueva-encuesta-de-farrell-muestra-poca-fuerza-para-breed\/\">Leer en espa\u00f1ol<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If voters were to head to the polls to elect a new mayor today, Mark Farrell would likely come out on top in first-place votes,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.markfarrell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/IMPACT-MEMO-FARRELL-BENCH-JUNE-2024-REV-E.pdf\">a poll<\/a>&nbsp;commissioned by his campaign shows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The poll, conducted by Impact Research \u2014 whose past clients include President Joseph Biden, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama \u2014 shows little headway for Mayor London Breed since&nbsp;<em>The San Francisco Chronicle&nbsp;<\/em>published its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/sf\/article\/mayor-london-breed-election-18678601.php\">poll<\/a>&nbsp;in February.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since that time, Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2024\/04\/peskin-campaign-begins-with-protest-promises\/\">joined the race<\/a>, but the top three contenders remain the same: Farrell would be the first-choice candidate for 23 percent of respondents; followed by Breed, with 21 percent; and Daniel Lurie, a Levi Strauss heir and nonprofit CEO, with 20 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Farrell remains first choice among likely voters, poll shows<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newspack-missionlocal.s3.amazonaws.com\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/firstChoice-desktop-1.png?w=780&amp;ssl=1\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>23%<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Farrell<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>21%<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Breed<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lurie<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>20%<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peskin<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>17%<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Safa\u00ed<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4%<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5%<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Undecided<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>11%<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>500 likely voters were surveyed by phone and online in English, Spanish, Mandarin and Cantonese between June 1 and June 6. Chart by Kelly Waldron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peskin is ranked second-to-last, and would receive 17 percent of the first-choice votes, according to the poll, followed by Supervisor Ahsha Safa\u00ed, with a dwindling four percent. Eleven percent of respondents said their first choice remains undecided, and five percent said they would choose another candidate. More than 50 people have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sf.gov\/reports\/november-2024\/candidates-november-5-2024-consolidated-general-election?_gl=1*q9j0co*_ga*MjE0NzI1MzQwMi4xNzA2NzI5MDYx*_ga_BT9NDE0NFC*MTcxODE0NzQxMi43LjEuMTcxODE0NzQyMS4wLjAuMA..*_ga_63SCS846YP*MTcxODE0NzQxMi43LjEuMTcxODE0NzQyMS4wLjAuMA..\">entered the race.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The margin of error for this poll is 4.5 percent which, in effect, means any of the top contenders could be in first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese results show a 3-way tie for first place, with Farrell\u2019s support having plateaued while Lurie continues to gain ground. Ultimately, Lurie\u2019s field leading favorability reflects that he\u2019s best positioned to prevail in a rank choice voting contest,\u201d said David Binder, the pollster for Lurie\u2019s campaign. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jim Stearns, a political consultant for Peskin\u2019s campaign, said he does not comment on other people\u2019s polls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The results are suboptimal for Breed who, during her campaign, has put a positive spin on the state of the city: She has recently touted&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sf.gov\/news\/san-francisco-2024-crime-rates-down-city-prepares-implement-new-voter-approved-public-safety#:~:text=Breed%20today%20announced%20that%20as,the%20first%20quarter%20of%202023.\">declining crime rates<\/a>, what she calls the city\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2024\/04\/see-how-they-run-mayor-breed-strolls-through-portola-wind-in-her-hair\/\">enlightenment period<\/a>,\u201d and events such as a recent impromptu&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/LondonBreed\/status\/1797397149652775381\">Skrillex<\/a>&nbsp;rave.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the survey, 67 percent of respondents gave Breed a negative favorability rating, and 56 percent said that \u201cthings in San Francisco are going poorly, and we need a drastic change to get back on track.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those results are not markedly different from those obtained by the&nbsp;<em>Chronicle<\/em>&nbsp;in February. In that survey of 812 likely voters, 71 percent of respondents&nbsp;disapproved of Breed\u2019s performance as mayor<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While other candidates have commissioned their own polls, Farrell\u2019s campaign is the first to publicize any results, presumably because it means spreading a good word.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur campaign has been in first place since launch, we are taking nothing for granted, and have no intention of easing off the gas,\u201d said Farrell, in a statement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Farrell echoed a similar sentiment at his recent&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2024\/06\/see-how-they-run-farrell-opens-hq-on-the-westside-calling-for-volunteers\/\">campaign headquarters launch<\/a>&nbsp;in West Portal. During the event, his team applauded their campaign\u2019s progress, but warned against becoming complacent. \u201cWe cannot rest on our laurels,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Farrell\u2019s campaign also released select responses to other questions, including an open-ended question where respondents were asked to describe each candidate. Eleven percent described Farrell as \u201cexperienced,\u201d while 6 percent described him as \u201cmoderate.\u201d Farrell\u2019s campaign would not disclose whether these were the most common words received.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lurie received the highest favorability rating, 39 percent, followed by Farrell at 36 percent and Peskin at 26 percent.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Impact Research conducted the survey over the phone and web, in English, Spanish, Mandarin and Cantonese from June 1 to 6.
