CMS said it projects health spending will rise by 5.6% annually over the coming years, with overall spending reaching $7.7 trillion by 2032.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Robert Weissman, president of the consumer advocacy group&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/public-citizen\">Public Citizen<\/a>, said in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.org\/news\/national-health-spending-to-reach-7-7-trillion-by-2032\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement<\/a>&nbsp;Thursday that the coming surge in healthcare spending &#8220;has nothing to do with improving care and everything to do with price-gouging, monopolization, and wealth extraction by insurance corporations, Big Pharma, and for-profit hospitals.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite spending more on healthcare per capita than any other rich nation, the U.S. consistently&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/01\/31\/health\/us-health-care-spending-global-perspective\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ranks last<\/a>&nbsp;among its peers in health outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">NEW: The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services\u00a0projected U.S. health care spending would climb to $7,000,000,000,000 by 2032, or 19.7% of our economy. <br><br>The U.S. spends more on health care than any other country. <br><br>We need Medicare for All yesterday. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/uJ2rhUiVyI\">pic.twitter.com\/uJ2rhUiVyI<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Public Citizen (@Public_Citizen) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Public_Citizen\/status\/1801351141500064237?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 13, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Weissman on Thursday pointed to an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/medicare-advantage-cost\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">academic analysis<\/a>&nbsp;published earlier this week in&nbsp;<em>JAMA Internal Medicine<\/em>&nbsp;detailing the massive costs of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/medicare-advantage\">Medicare Advantage<\/a>, a federally funded program run by private insurance companies. The paper notes that private Medicare Advantage plans have overcharged the federal government to the tune of $612 billion since 2007\u2014much of which insurers pocket as profit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We have known for decades that healthcare costs in the U.S. are out of control,&#8221; said Weissman. &#8220;The jaw-dropping figures from CMS highlight the need to move to Medicare for All immediately so that we can finally start to make healthcare more affordable for taxpayers, while ensuring everyone in America can access the care and medicines they need.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peoplespolicyproject.org\/2020\/12\/11\/cbo-medicare-for-all-reduces-health-spending\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Studies<\/a>&nbsp;have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2018\/11\/30\/easy-pay-something-costs-less-new-study-shows-medicare-all-would-save-us-51-trillion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">repeatedly<\/a>&nbsp;shown that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/medicare-for-all-2668439183\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">transitioning to a Medicare for All system<\/a>\u2014as proposed by Sen.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/bernie-sanders\">Bernie Sanders<\/a>&nbsp;(I-Vt.) and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/medicare-for-all-introduced\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more than 120<\/a>&nbsp;other members of Congress\u2014would save the U.S. hundreds of billions of dollars a year and countless lives compared to the status quo, which leaves tens of millions of people uninsured, underinsured, and unable to afford lifesaving treatments and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/04\/12\/report-says-cruel-and-regressive-us-insulin-prices-violate-human-rights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">medications<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peer-reviewed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/06\/14\/medicare-all-could-have-prevented-more-338000-us-covid-deaths-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research<\/a>&nbsp;published in 2022&nbsp;estimated that more than 338,000 coronavirus-related deaths could have been prevented in the U.S. if the country had a single-payer system that guaranteed coverage to all people as a right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Other countries spend far less per capita on healthcare while guaranteeing coverage and providing higher quality care,&#8221; Weissman said Thursday. &#8220;It is time that we do the same.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
