Obama backs an open process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/staff\/mia-mccarthy\">MIA MCCARTHY<\/a> 07\/21\/2024 (Politico.com)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Former President Barack Obama endorsed an open Democratic primary process at the convention next month \u2014 less than an hour after former President Bill Clinton endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have extraordinary confidence that the leaders of our party will be able to create a process from which an outstanding nominee emerges,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/barackobama.medium.com\/my-statement-on-president-bidens-announcement-1eb78b3ba3fc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Obama said in a statement<\/a>, which did not mention Harris. \u201cI believe that Joe Biden\u2019s vision of a generous, prosperous, and united America that provides opportunity for everyone will be on full display at the Democratic Convention in August.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier Sunday,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BillClinton\/status\/1815102085198958657\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a joint statement<\/a>&nbsp;between Clinton and former Secretary of State and 2016 Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton said the two were backing Harris: \u201cNow is the time to support Kamala Harris and fight with everything we\u2019ve got to elect her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their statements came soon after President Joe Biden announced he would not be seeking reelection and endorsed Harris to replace him at the top of the ticket. Harris announced shortly after that with Biden\u2019s support, she would&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/07\/21\/kamala-harris-running-for-president-00170067\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">seek the Democratic nomination<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Democratic National Convention starts on Aug. 19 in Chicago.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both former presidents Obama and Clinton thanked Biden, who served as Obama\u2019s vice president, for the current president\u2019s service.
