Everyone, it seems, loves a parade.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The nation and the party are in a nigh-unprecedented place. But for Harris, yet another veteran San Francisco politician in the national firmament, there is a strain of familiarity here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She has been a fixture of public life since 2003, when she&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20151127005330\/https:\/\/modernluxury.com\/san-francisco\/story\/the-unstoppable-rise-of-kamala-harris\">defeated incumbent Terrence Hallinan and Bill Fazio<\/a>&nbsp;to become San Francisco\u2019s district attorney. Like every \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20151127005330\/https:\/\/modernluxury.com\/san-francisco\/story\/the-unstoppable-rise-of-kamala-harris\">properly ambitious<\/a>\u201d politician, she has always sought \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2019\/01\/kamala-harris-actual-record-never-seemed-to-matter-before-will-it-now\/\">the next thing.<\/a>\u201d And she\u2019s gotten it: Millions of voters in 2010 enabled her to escape the gravitational pull of San Francisco politics and ascend to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20151127005330\/https:\/\/modernluxury.com\/san-francisco\/story\/the-unstoppable-rise-of-kamala-harris\">California attorney general<\/a>. Millions more in 2016 backed her to win Barbara Boxer\u2019s old Senate seat, a race she clearly had \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20151127005330\/https:\/\/modernluxury.com\/san-francisco\/story\/the-unstoppable-rise-of-kamala-harris\">wired.<\/a>\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2020, her own presidential bid fell short, but unprecedented numbers of voters went on to select the Biden-Harris ticket.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newspack-missionlocal.s3.amazonaws.com\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/mission-local-logo-300x300.jpg?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"Mission Local logo, with blue and orange lines on the shape of the Mission District\" class=\"wp-image-639216\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Stay informed on local elections \u2014 sign up for&nbsp;<strong>Mission Local&#8217;s free daily newsletter<\/strong>&nbsp;today!Sign up<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As ever, friends and foes alike are now highlighting her voluminous dossier \u2014&nbsp;but, as ever, Harris has (almost) always succeeded and ascended not because of her record but,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2019\/01\/kamala-harris-actual-record-never-seemed-to-matter-before-will-it-now\/\">in many ways, in spite of it<\/a>. It\u2019s not necessarily Harris\u2019 record that has won her election after election. It\u2019s her ability to generate excitement and her appeal \u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20151127005330\/https:\/\/modernluxury.com\/san-francisco\/story\/the-unstoppable-rise-of-kamala-harris\">&nbsp;she has \u201cit.\u201d&nbsp;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, that\u2019s familiar. And, once again \u2014 as in 2003, when she topped Hallinan and Fazio and in 2010, when she beat Steve Cooley \u2014&nbsp;Harris finds herself&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2019\/01\/kamala-harris-actual-record-never-seemed-to-matter-before-will-it-now\/\">pitted against a deeply flawed opponent<\/a>. Things have changed. But this thing hasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.missionculturalcenter.org\/shop\/p\/our-mision-statement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.broadstreetads.com\/assets\/d375efc8-3118-451b-9600-05530671ea19.jpg\" alt=\"August Art show\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And now, it\u2019s far more than her own career that\u2019s relying on it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newspack-missionlocal.s3.amazonaws.com\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Screen-Shot-2019-01-27-at-10.39.52-PM.png?resize=780%2C466&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-397855\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo by Miki Katoni, January 2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Many years ago, your humble narrator obtained a copy of a trove of opposition research amassed by one of Harris\u2019 deeply flawed opponents.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2020\/08\/kamala-harris-joe-biden-dude-abides\/\">And it was<\/a>&nbsp;massive; it was the size of an encyclopedia or phone book or any number of word-on-paper items that young people have never seen.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But there was nothing revelatory in there, not for anyone who\u2019d bothered to pick up a newspaper (also a word-on-paper item increasingly seen as an anachronism). A highlight reel:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/jenniferrosdail.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.broadstreetads.com\/assets\/5608e33b-2c09-471e-a539-a5fb014bd56e.gif\" alt=\"Jennifer SR\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>Her former romantic interest Willie Brown&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/articles.latimes.com\/1994-11-29\/news\/mn-2787_1_brown-associates\">placing her<\/a>&nbsp;on $95,000-a-year commissions and buoying her career; rampant ineptitude and dysfunction and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/archives.sfweekly.com\/thesnitch\/2010\/12\/14\/a-timeline-of-problems-at-the-sfpd-dna-lab\">cover-ups&nbsp;<\/a>at the police DNA and crime labs; the San Francisco DA\u2019s office inexplicably applying for \u2014&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/bayarea\/article\/SF-to-lose-millions-for-border-billings-3201837.php\">and receiving<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 millions of federal dollars earmarked for border counties it was forced to pay back; her initiative to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/news\/article\/S-F-cites-parents-of-chronically-truant-kids-3209547.php\">cite the parents<\/a>&nbsp;of truant children \u2026 and much, much more.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>All of this happened, more or less. It feels a bit far-fetched to imagine GOP oppo researchers striking gold with arcana about Harris\u2019 tenure as San Francisco district attorney a generation ago. But it is&nbsp;<em>not&nbsp;<\/em>hard to imagine salacious Republican broadsides involving her relationship with a powerful older patron like Brown \u2014&nbsp;and Brown&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2024\/07\/21\/williebrown-endorses-kamalaharris-president\/\">probably isn\u2019t helping<\/a>&nbsp;by jumping in front of a phalanx of cameras and microphones and holding impromptu press conferences on her behalf.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To borrow an apt passage from the movie \u201cAnchorman\u201d: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NfbQDW2HvrY\">Take it easy, Champ.<\/a>&nbsp;Why don\u2019t you stop talking for a while? Maybe sit the next couple plays out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the next four months, Harris will likely suffer through the most toxic, misogynistic and racist campaign in American history. We can also anticipate stories of San Francisco chaos, filth and disorder, already a cable TV and online staple, to reach a whole new level.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s what we can expect from the Republican Party of Donald Trump. But Harris \u2014&nbsp;or any Democrat \u2014&nbsp;remains competitive, even after a month of nonstop Democratic circular firing squads. And that\u2019s because, once again, Harris is facing a deeply flawed opponent. In fact, she is now facing&nbsp;<em>two<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u201csix way parlay. i want Biden step down on Sunday. i want Kamala at the convention. I want trump pennsylvania and arizona, kamala electoral, kamala popular. read it back to me\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/pqPKUGgA95\">pic.twitter.com\/pqPKUGgA95<\/a><\/p>&mdash; BuccoCapital Bloke (@buccocapital) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/buccocapital\/status\/1814082904362012980?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 18, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The selection of extremist and anti-abortion crusader Sen. J.D. Vance as the GOP\u2019s vice-presidential candidate&nbsp;hits differently with Joe Biden out of the top slot; Vance has proposed essentially reconstituting the Fugitive Slave Act to punish women who travel out of state for an abortion. The erstwhile Republican talking point that age and erratic public behavior make one unfit to seek higher office has also boomeranged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s always better to face flawed opponents exercising bad judgment than tough ones who make good decisions. And, unlike the post-George Floyd era in 2020 \u2014 when candidate Harris had to twist herself into a pretzel with the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/01\/17\/opinion\/kamala-harris-criminal-justice.html\">ludicrous claim that she was a \u201cprogressive prosecutor\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 in 2024 candidate Harris can run as a truer version of herself.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this campaign, her record may actually match her rhetoric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newspack-missionlocal.s3.amazonaws.com\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/img_2721-1-853x640.jpg?resize=780%2C585&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"A group of people stands on the steps of a large building for a public event. Photo by Junyao Yang<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On the eve of Harris\u2019 easy 2016 Senate victory over Rep. Loretta Sanchez,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20151127005330\/https:\/\/modernluxury.com\/san-francisco\/story\/the-unstoppable-rise-of-kamala-harris\">polling revealed&nbsp;<\/a>the former San Francisco DA\u2019s most appealing features. She had created \u201ca very vague, broad positive feeling\u201d about herself; she had done a \u201cdecent-to-good job\u201d as California AG, and she is a Democrat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes, that\u2019s all it takes. The forthcoming campaign does not figure to be a deeply intellectual or substantive exercise. It figures to be a wholly vibes-based election (which is something it feels like you could say about every election from here on out, along with \u201cthis is the most consequential election of our times\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Watching the ongoing ascent of San Francisco politicos like Gov. Gavin Newsom and Harris \u2014&nbsp;and, now, seeing Harris placed in the role as the last, best chance for ongoing American democracy \u2014&nbsp;is, itself, a strange and terrible experience. It harks to the Jack Benny bit in which a robber tells him \u201cyour money or your life,\u201d and he responds \u201cI\u2019m thinking, I\u2019m thinking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But sometimes you don\u2019t need to think too hard. \u201cA very vague, broad positive feeling\u201d isn\u2019t an ideal campaign slogan; it\u2019s probably too many words. But you could do worse.
