The U.S., in failing this ultimate test of a successful nation, remains an outlier.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People in the U.S., which spends&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonwealthfund.org\/publications\/issue-briefs\/2023\/oct\/high-us-health-care-spending-where-is-it-all-going\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">roughly twice as much per capita<\/a>&nbsp;on healthcare as other rich nations, &#8220;live the shortest lives and have the most avoidable deaths,&#8221; Commonwealth noted, pointing to frequent &#8220;denials of services by insurance companies&#8221; and other systematic defects of the American system, including massive administrative costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, insurance giants and pharmaceutical companies are raking in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/finance\/insurance-companies-profits-stock-ebae7fd1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">huge profits<\/a>, benefiting in particular from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/report-shows-big-insurance-profiting-massively-from-growing-privatization-of-medicare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">growing privatization of Medicare<\/a>. More than half of the Medicare-eligible population in the U.S. is currently on a privately run&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/medicare\/issue-brief\/medicare-advantage-in-2024-enrollment-update-and-key-trends\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Medicare Advantage plan<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Our private, profit-driven system means that we are paying more for less,&#8221; progressive activist Jonathan Cohn&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JonathanCohn\/status\/1836629402727190727\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>&nbsp;in response to the Commonwealth report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/d55742a2-eb79-4a32-a302-ad83b44004dd?parent_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2Fus-healthcare-system%3Futm_source%3DCommon%2BDreams%26utm_campaign%3D92f2644b70-Top%2BNews%253A%2BThur.%2B9%252F19%252F2024%26utm_medium%3Demail%26utm_term%3D0_-3b949b3e19-%255BLIST_EMAIL_ID%255D&#038;src=embed#async_embed<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Commonwealth Fund&#8217;s findings bolster progressives&#8217; case for transitioning to a Medicare for All system that would provide comprehensive coverage to everyone in the country for free at the point of service.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2018\/11\/30\/easy-pay-something-costs-less-new-study-shows-medicare-all-would-save-us-51-trillion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Studies<\/a>&nbsp;have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2018\/07\/30\/koch-funded-hit-piece-backfires-shows-medicare-all-would-save-whopping-2-trillion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">repeatedly shown<\/a>&nbsp;that such a program would cost less than the immensely wasteful for-profit system\u2014which is set to drive national healthcare spending to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/us-healthcare-spending\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$7.7 trillion per year<\/a>&nbsp;by 2032\u2014while&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/06\/14\/medicare-all-could-have-prevented-more-338000-us-covid-deaths-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">saving lives<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Commonwealth observed Thursday that while affordability &#8220;is a pervasive problem&#8221; in the U.S., Australia &#8220;offers free care in all public hospitals, and the nation&#8217;s universal Medicare system provides all Australians with coverage for all or part of the cost of [general practitioners] and specialist consultations and diagnostic tests, with additional subsidies available for private hospital care.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The U.S. continues to be in a class by itself in the underperformance of its healthcare sector,&#8221; the report continues. &#8220;While the other nine countries differ in the details of their systems and in their performance on domains, unlike the U.S., they all have found a way to meet their residents&#8217; most basic health care needs, including universal coverage.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/ea827150-3fb4-41c9-b9b7-556bc84658b0?parent_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2Fus-healthcare-system%3Futm_source%3DCommon%2BDreams%26utm_campaign%3D92f2644b70-Top%2BNews%253A%2BThur.%2B9%252F19%252F2024%26utm_medium%3Demail%26utm_term%3D0_-3b949b3e19-%255BLIST_EMAIL_ID%255D&#038;src=embed#async_embed<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the U.S. presidential election less than two months away, neither 2024 candidate for the two major parties has outlined a detailed healthcare proposal thus far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Former President&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/donald-trump\">Donald Trump<\/a>, the Republican nominee, said during last week&#8217;s debate in Philadelphia that he merely has &#8220;the concepts of a plan,&#8221; while Harris\u2014who&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/kamala-harris-medicare-for-all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">once co-sponsored Medicare for All legislation<\/a>&nbsp;in the Senate\u2014said she &#8220;absolutely&#8221; supports &#8220;private healthcare options&#8221; and wants to &#8220;maintain and grow the Affordable Care Act.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just days after the debate, Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio)\u2014Trump&#8217;s running mate\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/rachel-maddow-show\/maddowblog\/vance-signals-new-troubles-preexisting-conditions-rcna171442\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;the Republican nominee prefers a system in which &#8220;a young American&#8221; and a &#8220;65-year-old American with a chronic condition&#8221; are not placed in &#8220;the same risk pools,&#8221; suggesting a rollback of the ACA&#8217;s protections for people with preexisting conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You can&#8217;t really say people with preexisting conditions are protected if they are in a separate insurance risk pool and can be charged exorbitant premiums,\u201d Larry Levitt, executive vice president for health policy at the research group KFF,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/larry_levitt\/status\/1835714299958075516\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a>\u00a0in response to Vance&#8217;s comments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
