The libertarian&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_Tennessee\">University of Tennessee<\/a>&nbsp;law professor&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Glenn_Reynolds\">Glenn Reynolds<\/a>&nbsp;introduced him to writers like&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ludwig_von_Mises\">Ludwig von Mises<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Murray_Rothbard\">Murray Rothbard<\/a>. Another influence was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Burnham\">James Burnham<\/a>, who asserted that real politics occurred through the actions of elites, beneath what he called apparent democratic or socialist rhetoric.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Curtis_Yarvin#cite_note-FOOTNOTETait2019191-21\">[21]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;In the 2000s, the failures of US-led nation-building in Iraq and Afghanistan strengthened Yarvin&#8217;s anti-democratic views, the federal response to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Financial_crisis_of_2007%E2%80%9308\">2008 financial crisis<\/a>&nbsp;strengthened his libertarian convictions, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barack_Obama\">Barack Obama<\/a>&#8216;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2008_United_States_presidential_election\">election as US president<\/a>&nbsp;later that year reinforced his belief that history inevitably progresses toward left-leaning societies.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Curtis_Yarvin#cite_note-FOOTNOTETait2019192-22\">[22]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2007, Yarvin began the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blog\">blog<\/a>&nbsp;<em>Unqualified Reservations<\/em>&nbsp;to promote his political vision.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Curtis_Yarvin#cite_note-FOOTNOTETait2019187-23\">[23]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;In an early blog post, he adapted a phrase from the movie&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Matrix\"><em>The Matrix<\/em><\/a>, repurposing &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Red_pill_and_blue_pill#As_political_metaphor\">red pill<\/a>&#8221; to mean a shattering of progressive illusions.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Curtis_Yarvin#cite_note-FOOTNOTESiegel2022-14\">[14]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;He largely stopped updating his blog in 2013, when he began to focus on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Urbit\">Urbit<\/a>; in April 2016 he announced that&nbsp;<em>Unqualified Reservations<\/em>&nbsp;had &#8220;completed its mission&#8221;.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Curtis_Yarvin#cite_note-FOOTNOTETait2019198-24\">[24]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of 2022, Yarvin blogs his views on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Substack\">Substack<\/a>&nbsp;under the page name&nbsp;<em>Gray Mirror<\/em>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Curtis_Yarvin#cite_note-25\">[25]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Views\">Views<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Dark_Enlightenment\">Dark Enlightenment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Main article:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dark_Enlightenment\">Dark Enlightenment<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yarvin believes that real political power in the United States is held by something he calls &#8220;the Cathedral&#8221;, an amalgam of universities and the mainstream press.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Curtis_Yarvin#cite_note-26\">[26]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;According to him, a so-called &#8220;Brahmin&#8221; social class dominates American society, preaching progressive values to the masses. Yarvin and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dark_Enlightenment\">Dark Enlightenment<\/a>&nbsp;(sometimes abbreviated to &#8220;NRx&#8221;) movement assert that the Cathedral&#8217;s commitment to equality and justice erodes social order.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Curtis_Yarvin#cite_note-FOOTNOTETait2019195-27\">[27]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Drawing on computer metaphors, Yarvin contends that society needs a &#8220;hard reset&#8221; or a &#8220;rebooting&#8221;, not a series of gradual political reforms.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Curtis_Yarvin#cite_note-FOOTNOTETait2019197-28\">[28]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Instead of activism, he advocates passivism, claiming that progressivism would fail without right-wing opposition.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Curtis_Yarvin#cite_note-FOOTNOTETait2019197%E2%80%93198-29\">[29]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;According to him, NRx adherents should rather design &#8220;new architectures of exit&#8221; than engage in ineffective political activism.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Curtis_Yarvin#cite_note-FOOTNOTESmithBurrows2021149-30\">[30]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yarvin argues for a &#8220;neo-cameralist&#8221; philosophy based on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Frederick_the_Great\">Frederick the Great<\/a>&nbsp;of Prussia&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cameralism\">cameralism<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Curtis_Yarvin#cite_note-AtlanticGray-31\">[31]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;In Yarvin&#8217;s view, democratic governments are inefficient and wasteful and should be replaced with sovereign&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joint-stock_company\">joint-stock corporations<\/a>&nbsp;whose &#8220;shareholders&#8221; (large owners) elect an executive with total power, but who must serve at their pleasure.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Curtis_Yarvin#cite_note-FOOTNOTETait2019197-28\">[28]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;The executive, unencumbered by liberal-democratic procedures, could rule efficiently much like a CEO-monarch.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Curtis_Yarvin#cite_note-FOOTNOTETait2019197-28\">[28]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Yarvin admires Chinese leader&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Deng_Xiaoping\">Deng Xiaoping<\/a>&nbsp;for his pragmatic and market-oriented authoritarianism, and the city-state of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Singapore\">Singapore<\/a>&nbsp;as an example of a successful authoritarian regime.
